KHP Responds to Back to Back Accidents in Gove County

An eastbound pickup trying to pass a semi on I-70 in Gove County Tuesday afternoon ended up in the westbound lanes after losing control. The Highway Patrol says the accident happened at 3:00 about 5.5 miles east of Quinter. The driver of the pickup from Colorado was taken to Gove County Medical Center.

A minute later in the same location two vehicles collided when one slowed for pedestrians crossing the interstate. A car driven by 71-year-old Freda Hunt of Grainfield slowed and was rear-ended by a van driven by a man from Kansas City. Hunt and the two adults in the van were all taken to Gove County Medical Center with possible injuries. Two children in the van were not injured.

One Killed In Crash Near Kinsley Tuesday

A Salina man was killed in a wreck late Tuesday afternoon in Edwards County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a semi driven by 57-year-old Charles Kerth was eastbound on US 56 about 2 miles east of Kinsley, when his truck went off the road for unknown reasons and struck another semi that was parked at a stop sign at an intersection.

The driver of that truck 50-year-old Danial Haynes of Kinsley was taken to St. Francis in Wichita for treatment of injuries.

The wreck occurred just after 5:00pm Tuesday.

Preventing Holiday House Fires

A house fire any time of year is a tragedy.  A fire during the holidays can be even more devastating.

Unfortunately, all those decorations, burning candles, and of course, the  Christmas tree itself, natural or artificial, are the top three contributors to holiday fires, according to Hays Fire Chief Gary Brown.

“Be extra vigilant this time of year.  Carry out all the boxes and wrapping paper as soon as you’ve opened all the Christmas gifts.  And remember,  even if you don’t smoke, a holiday guest may,” he says.

Thanks to a donation by Dick Werth at Auto World, the Hays Fire Department has free carbon monoxide and smoke alarms for residents who can’t afford them.

Nearly $18,000 Of Prescription Medication Stolen From Salina Pharmacy

A sizable amount of prescription medication was taken in a burglary of a pharmacy in Salina early Monday morning.

Video shows a single male suspect used rocks to break a window on the southside of Jim’s Pharmacy at 582 S. Ohio. $400 in cash was stolen along with 12,000 pills that included Oxycodone, Diazepan, Oxycontin, Fentanyl and Hydrocodone.

Salina Police are expected to release a video showing the suspect, who had on a heavy cammo coat, and was wearing some type of mask and gloves. The suspect is of medium height.

Loss and damage placed at $18,167.

Police believe that it’s possible the suspect may have also broken into Salina Dental Associates at 950 Elmhurst over the weekend.

Nothing was taken but damage to a window was estimated at $200.

Four Hays High Indians Named to All-State Team

Four Hays High Indians were selected to the 5A All-State football team released Tuesday.

David Cardinal rushed for over 1,000 yards the past two seasons and finished with 1, 056 yards on the ground this season. Cardinal was also named to Western Athletic Conference player of the year the past two seasons. Adam Deterding led the Indians with 21 receptions and 595 yards and nine touchdowns. Cade Sharp was a three-time all WAC selection on the line and finished with 65 tackles and five sacks in his senior season. Emilio Mitchell tied for a team high 66 tackles this season and added two sacks.

The Indians finished 7-3 and made it to the playoffs for the second straight season before falling to eventual 5A champs Bishop Carroll.

Women’s Basketball Jumps Up Six Spots to No. 17 in National Rankings

The Fort Hays State women’s basketball jumped six spots in the national rankings to No. 17 on Tuesday after spending the previous week at No. 23, which was its first appearance in the national rankings since 1997. The No. 17 ranking is the highest ever for the women in Fort Hays State’s NCAA Division II history.

That No. 17 ranking will be put to the test quickly on Wednesday when the Lady Tigers host Central Missouri, which jumped into the national rankings this week at No. 23, where FHSU sat in last week’s poll. The addition of Central Missouri to the Top 25 gives the MIAA five teams in the Top 25 for women’s basketball. Washburn is now the highest ranked of the five at No. 8, while Pittsburg State dropped from No. 3 to No. 11 this week following its first loss of the season. FHSU jumped Emporia State in the poll, which sits at No. 21 this week and then Central Missouri rounds out the five at No. 23.

The Top 25 match-up of FHSU versus Central Missouri on Wednesday is just the second time in Fort Hays State’s Division II history where it will match-up against a nationally ranked team, while it also holds a national ranking. The last time was 1997 when a No. 25 ranked FHSU squad defeated No. 22 ranked Metro State by four points in Hays.

Following the game with Central Missouri on Wednesday, Fort Hays State will have another strong test at Missouri Western on Saturday. Missouri Western is off to a 7-1 start overall and received votes in the latest poll.

Below are the national rankings for Tuesday, December 4, 2012…

Donations Pour In For Puppy Injured In Crash Last Week; Recovering From Surgery

A sad story has turned a little brighter for a puppy in Central Kansas.

“Hudson”, the puppy that was injured in a high speed, head-on collision on Highway 281 in Stafford County Thursday was released from Countryside Veterinary Monday evening after undergoing surgery to repair a broken leg.

“Hudson” is now at home with her new family that adopted her after the crash.

Misty Blakeslee, a paramedic in Stafford County, who worked the accident, adopted Hudson and agreed to pay for the dog’s medical expenses resulting from injuries suffered in the crash. The previous owner, who was involved in the crash, declined the dog’s medical care but allowed Blakeslee to adopt the dog.

After the story was published Thursday evening, donations poured in and ended up covering all of “Hudson”‘s medical expenses. Blakeslee said “We are just amazed at the response and the donations. We are very thankful to all of who donated.”

“Hudson” will reportedly require six follow-up visits and is expected to make a full recovery in 4-8 weeks.

Watch Out For Deer!

It’s that time of year, when deer collisions are most prevalent!

Don’t ruin your plans or the animal’s plans with a collision. The number of deer-related collisions in the U.S. has increased by more than 7% over the last year and November remains the month where collisions with deer or other animals is most likely.

This holiday season, be safe on the road!

Huelskamp Removed From Key Committees

Kansas Representative Tim Huelskamp, R-Fowler, has been removed from key committee assignments by Speaker of the House John Boehner.

According to The New York Times, Huelskamp no longer will sit on the House Budget Committee or the Agriculture Committee.

Along with Huelskamp, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan was moved off the budget committee, reportedly because of an “obstinate” voting pattern – including votes against former vice presidential candidate and budget committee chairman Paul Ryan’s budget plan.

“The GOP leadership might think they have silenced conservatives, but removing me and others from key committees only confirms our conservative convictions. This is clearly a vindictive move, and a sure sign that the GOP Establishment cannot handle disagreement,” Huelskamp said on his Web site.

Huelskamp’s removal from the House Agriculture Committee means that for the first time in recent history – dating back at least to Keith Sebelius in the 1960s – Kansas’ First Congressional District won’t have a representative on the House Agricultural Committee.

Sen. Moran Holds Town Hall Meeting in Russell

Senator Jerry Moran, R-KS, told the audience in Russell’s Dream Theater Saturday he needed a dose of “good judgement and common sense” before he returned to Washington, D.C.

His town hall meeting drew about 35 people who listened and lamented about the nation’s burgeoning deficit, the so-called fiscal cliff and what may happen to tax cuts.

Some in the audience advocate increasing taxes; others favor budget cuts.

“Before I would vote to raise taxes, the benefits that come from doing so, have to be greater than the tax increase would cover, and prove to me that the money is going to go to reduce the debt, not to spend more money,” said Moran.

Hear more from the meeting tonight on Eagle Local News, ECTV Channel 14.
