Certain types of open burning are allowed within the Hays city limits, but there are some restrictions and some common sense steps residents are asked to follow. Fire Chief Gary Brown says outdoor fire places, barbeques and other devices are permitted when used safely.

Brown says outdoor fires should be kept at least ten feet away from buildings, and bon fires need to be approved by the fire department.

Residents are prohibited from burning trash in the city.
