McPherson used runs of 19-1 and 17-0 in the first half to build a 42-7 halftime lead over Hays in the first round of the Mid-America Classic hosted by the Bullpups. The Indians outscored McPherson 17-8 in the third quarter getting back within 24 points at one time. The Indians were led by Janae Gagnon and Emily Braun who scored nine points each. Oklahoma State Signee Katelyn Loecker scored a game high 17 in the 62-28 Bullpup victory.
Hays High shot 12-34 in the game while McPherson went 24-45 and made 7 of 14 three pointers.
McPherson is ranked third in class 4A and is one of the five ranked teams in the tournament. Andale (4A), Manhattan (6A), Valley Center (5A) and Olathe South (6A) are also ranked.
Hays falls to 5-6 on the season and will play Dodge City at 4:30 on Friday. It will be the second time in three games the two have met. Hays High beat Dodge City after a ten points second half deficit last Tuesday.
