USD 489 Drops Course Fees

In their review and approval of next year’s course guide for Hays High School, the USD 489 Board of Education decided Monday night to eliminate course fees.

USD-489Superintendent Will Roth says these fees sometimes forced students not to take certain courses, and the board didn’t think that was appropriate for public education.

Fees for textbooks and courses that require special projects such as woodworking will still be in place.

Winter Safety Tip!

Always keep your vehicle’s fuel tank at least half full during bad weather. Being stranded with low or no fuel can put you at risk.

Click HERE for winter driving tips from State Farm.

Winter driving conditions can turn treacherous in an instant. Snow, ice, poor visibility, and extreme cold can disable your vehicle or make roads impassable. Even on a relatively short trip, you can find yourself stranded for several hours. It’s important to plan ahead for such a situation

Efficiency Task Force Presents Recommendations

Sam_Brownback_official_portrait1TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas task force has presented its final report on ways to get public schools to devote more of their state funding to classrooms.

Gov. Sam Brownback created the School Efficiency Task Force last fall, filling it mostly with accountants but no teachers. The panel released its final list of 12 recommendations Monday.

Brownback already included many of the suggestions in the proposed budget and the State of the State address he presented to legislators last week.

Among other things, the task force recommends that the state adopt a two-year budget cycle to give schools more stability and predictability in funding. It also suggests conducting an efficiency study or audit of the State Department of Education.

Commission Authorizes GO Bonds for Projects

Ellis County courthouseThe Ellis County Commission Monday night established themselves as a public building commission to proceed with financing upcoming building projects.

Commissioner Barbara Wasinger expressed her gratitude to the Space Needs Committee, which for several years has been studying and making recommendations on the county’s building needs.

The two large projects, the EMS/Rural Fire building and the jail, will be partially funded by sales tax if approved by the voters. The public building commission last night approved the remaining financing through general obligation bonds. That will also provide funding for remodeling at the Commerce Bank building and 601 Main. The total for all of the projects is estimated at $14.5 million.

Residents can file a petition protesting the bonds. The protest period ends April 3rd.
