Four Years Later, Dodge City Man Charged with Child’s Death

pickleA 28-year-old Dodge City man has been arrested in the 2008 death of his girlfriend’s daughter.

The Dodge City Globe reports that Brock W. Cunningham was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and felony child abuse in the death of 3-year-old Natalie Pickle. The child was severely injured in Dodge City on Nov. 19, 2008, and died the next day at a Wichita hospital.

The case has remained open since authorities ruled the child’s death a homicide in 2008.

Dan Monnat, Cunningham’s lawyer, said Friday that Cunningham is innocent of the charges and “had nothing to do with causing her death.” He says Cunningham tried to save the child’s life that night and has cooperated with law enforcement during the investigation.

Cunningham was released on $75,000 bond Thursday.

Governor Proposes Stable Funding for Higher Ed

fort_hays_state_university_ihe_mediumTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Gov. Sam Brownback’s budget proposals would hold state spending on its higher education system flat over the two fiscal years that begin in July.

The recommendations outlined Wednesday by Brownback would keep total spending on state universities, community colleges and vocational colleges around $2.5 billion for the fiscal year that begins in July and the following fiscal year.

Current spending is a little more than $2.5 billion, or about 1.7 percent higher than Brownback is proposing for both of the following fiscal years.

But his budget proposals assume less funding for infrastructure projects and don’t include any further tuition increases.

Fort Hays State President Edward Hammond says the budget recommendation shows the Governor’s commitment to higher education.

Courts Want to Drop Surcharges

Kansas-Supreme-CourtTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas Supreme Court hopes to end emergency surcharges that people pay to file lawsuits and get marriage licenses. The court wants legislators to rely more heavily on state tax dollars to finance the court system.

The judicial branch is proposing a 16 percent increase in the tax dollars it receives for the fiscal year beginning in July. The increase would be about $17 million, to $123 million from the current $106 million. The Supreme Court administers the court system.

The increase would allow the courts to eliminate $11 million in extra fees. The judiciary’s total budget would be about $135 million, an increase of $3 million, or a relatively modest 2.1 percent.

Gov. Sam Brownback was required by law to include the proposals in his budget recommendations.

County Approaches Hays About Tax

Money - Dollar Sign 001Ellis County Administrator Greg Sund Thursday night approached the Hays City Commission asking for support of a legislative bill designating a sales tax purely for two county building projects. Commissioner Henry Schwaller says he’s not sure this is the right time to request a dedicated tax.

The county sales tax would replace the tax currently in existence for the sports complex. It would be targeted for a new EMS/Rural Fire building and improvements to the jail and courthouse. The county is asking the incorporated cities to support the legislation, which if approved would be put up for a county wide vote.

The city will consider a letter of support next week.

KHAZ Country Music News: George Strait Says Hello to His Farewell Tour Friday Night in Lubbock, TX

khaz george strait 20121210George Strait‘s appropriately launching his final tour Friday night in his home state of Texas. The Cowboy Rides Away tour gets underway in Lubbock, and it’s just one of the cities George hand selected for this last trek.

He says, “We’re trying to go to cities that we’ve been going to for a long, long time so we’re able to make one final appearance there during a tour.”

George is pretty sure he’s making the right decision to say goodbye to life on the road once this tour ends in 2014. He’s doing these final shows to honor the fans who have supported him since his 1981 debut on the country charts.

“I just hope they understand that it’s inevitable that it’s gonna happen at some point,” George says of leaving the road. “I kinda want to be able to pick the time instead of it come along when I’m the only one that shows up out there.”

George’s fans can expect him to dig deep into his catalog while making the set list for this tour. They can also look forward to an opening set from Martina McBride, who will be on all dates of The Cowboy Rides Away tour.

Says George, “She’s just incredible. An incredible singer, and a great person. We have a lot of fun out there with her. We were out with her last year, and we’re gonna go out with her again this year. And so, we’re happy about that.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Dierks Bentley Promises Surprises and a Killer Set on Locked & Reloaded Tour with Miranda Lambert

khaz dierks bentley miranda lambert 20121024Miranda Lambert first approached Dierks Bentley about hitting the road on the Locked & Reloaded tour in — where else? — a bar.  The two were having a few drinks in Las Vegas when Miranda suggested they revisit their 2006 tour together, which was called Locked & Loaded.  Back then, Miranda was Dierks’ opening act, but this time around they’ll both play full sets before joining each other for collaborations at the end of the night.

Dierks says of their collaborations, “We’re gonna do some country stuff.  Some unexpected stuff.  Some rock stuff, but it’s just gonna be a combination of different things.”  He adds, “We really want to do some things that the fans would expect, but also some things they might not expect to hear.”

Dierks also promises his fans more bells and whistles on stage than he’s ever had before.  He has a brand-new set and more video content than he’s ever had in his shows up to this point.

Speaking about his thought process going into this tour, Dierks says, “Let’s pretend this is the last tour we’re ever gonna do.  What would we do?  Well, we’d have a killer set that we can climb around on and shoot lights through and make it something really exciting and new for us and for our fans.”

Dierks and his band and crew are also looking forward to getting in the groove of a structured tour again.  Last year, Dierks played a lot of different types of shows in the U.S. and abroad, and he’s looking forward to consistency with this new trek.

He says, “It’s just really fun to be on, like, a consistent kind of deal every night and really be able to put forth the kind of show that we sit on the bus talking about until 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning.”

15th-Ranked Tigers Hang On for 24-15 Dual Win Over 17th-Ranked Grizzlies

FHSU-WRE-MeansThe 15th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team defeated 17th-ranked Adams State in dual action by a score of 24-15 on Thursday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The win improved Fort Hays State to 8-5 in dual action for the season.

The Tigers were already guaranteed 12 points with the Grizzlies open at 125 and 197 pounds, but they struggled in the eight contested matches with Adams State winning five.

Daniel Kelly had a third period takedown that erased Derek Koehn’s riding time advantage and held on for a 5-4 win at 157 pounds. Justin Samora had a takedown of Sam Thoman late in the third period at 165 pounds to break a tie and win 3-1. Jarrod Purvis picked up a 9-5 win in the second overtime period at 174 pounds when he scored a reversal and three near-fall points when trailing 5-4 in the second 30-second overtime period.

Zack Grimes stopped the Adams State momentum with a 4-2 decision over Mario Garcia to tie the dual once again at 15-15 then the Tigers benefitted from Adams State being open at 197 pounds to go up 21-15. Alex Feldkamp took the forfeit win, allowing Tanner Kriss (ranked No. 4 at 197 pounds) to wrestle up a weight and defeat Adams State heavyweight Taylor Stam 7-0 to seal the FHSU win 24-15.
