khaz clay walker 20130116Clay Walker hosts the new season of Trophy Hunters TV Sundays at 2 p.m. ET on the Outdoor Channel. He was already a fan of the hunting show, so it was a no-brainer when they asked him to host.

Clay says, “I hope that the fans enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed hosting and being a part of this season.”

This season of Trophy Hunters TV finds Clay hunting elk in Colorado and deer in Texas, as well as playing his guitar back at the camp.

In other Clay Walker news, he’s announced plans for the first-ever Band Against MS Ride, taking place February 2 at the Houston Oaks Country Club & Family Sports Retreat. The event brings together Clay’s passion for cycling and his commitment to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis. Clay was diagnosed with the disease in 1996.

For more information on the ride, go to BandAgainstMS.org.

Companies Fined for No Call Violations

Derek-Schmidt-150x150TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas attorney general’s office says two companies have agreed to pay $10,000 each for violating the state’s no-call telemarketing law.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt identified the companies Tuesday as Prairie Life Fitness LLC, of Omaha, Neb., and Vandell Communications LLC, based in Illinois.

Schmidt’s office began investigating Prairie Life Fitness in early 2012 after an Overland Park resident complained of getting a solicitation by phone. The company acknowledged marketing its Kansas-based fitness centers to Kansas residents who had placed their numbers on the national do-not-call registry.

The attorney general says Vandell Communications telephoned Kansas residents on the no-call list offering prizes on behalf of a Nevada company selling travel-related services.

Schmidt says both companies agreed to pay the state $10,000 in penalties and fees for the violations.

Brownback Addresses Taxes, Education in State of State

BrownbackTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Republican Gov. Sam Brownback reaffirmed in his State of the State address Tuesday evening that his goal is to eventually eliminate income taxes. But his plan for further reductions is tied to keeping the state sales tax at its current rate, rather letting it drop in July as previously planned.

Brownback also endorsed proposed constitutional amendments on education funding and the selection of judges for the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.

Brownback’s speech came just days after a three-member panel of trial judges ruled the state must boost its annual aid to public schools by at least $440 million.

Brownback wants to spend $12 million to help Kansas elementary school students who struggle with reading.

The Governor says 29 percent of Kansas fourth-graders can’t read at a basic level. The governor says promoting elementary school pupils who can’t read is “irresponsible and cruel.”

Lady Indians Orchestrate Comeback Over Dodge City, Win 44-42

IndianThe script seemed to be the same for the Hays High Lady Indians from Friday night versus Garden City to their Tuesday game against Dodge City.  Good first quarter, followed by a cold shooting second and third quarter leading to a loss.  Only this time the Indians fought back and won.

Hays High led several time in the first quarter and trailed by just two points three minutes into the second quarter.  Dodge City went on a 9-4 run to end the first half when it took the Indians six minutes to score their first field goal in the second quarter.

Hays then trailed by ten at 31-21 with 5:30 remaining in the third.  And that is when the Indian comeback began.  Four consecutive field goals from Katelyn Schumacher cut the Red Demon lead to two and Janae Gagnon tied the game at 31 with ten second remaining in the third quarter.  Hays pushed the run to 14-0 over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and lead 35-31.  Dodge City fought back though hitting three pointers to tie the score at 37 and at 42 after Taylor Herman hit both ends of a one and one with :30 remaining.

Hays got the ball with :18 seconds remaining and got two quick shots off before Dodge City tipped a rebound out of bounds.  Schumacher in-bounded to Herman getting the ball right back to Schumacher who scored with less than three seconds remaining.

Dodge City’s timeout came with just .6 remaining on the clock and got a full court heave off that landed well left.

Schumacher scored a career high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in her third double-double of the season.  Dodge City’s Ciera Lampe scored 18 including four three pointers.

Hays shot 17 of 50 from the field and 0 of 5 on threes.  Dodge City was 15 of 41 and made 5 of 17 threes.  The Indians made 10 of 12 free throws while the Red Demons made 6 of 12.

Hays out-rebounded Dodge City 41 to 19.

The Hays High girls are 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Dodge City is 2-6 and 0-3 in the WAC.

Hays is off until next Thursday when they will play in the Mid-America Classic in McPherson.

The #9 Hays High boys are on the road Thursday for the first round of the Colby Orange and Black Classic to take on Burlington, Colorado at 3:00 in Colby High School.
