Constitutional Change Would Impact School Funding Lawsuits

Capitol Building - KS 004TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Republican legislators are pushing a change in the Kansas Constitution on education funding to end a pending lawsuit.

The measure would add a provision to the constitution declaring that the Legislature has the exclusive power to determine how much money is spent on schools.

The Senate Education Committee agreed Wednesday to sponsor the measure before it was drafted.

Senate Vice President Jeff King, a Republican from Independence, helped draft it and provided a copy of the language to The Associated Press before its formal introduction Thursday.

A three-judge panel in Shawnee County recently ordered the state to increase education funding.

Constitutional amendments require approval by two-thirds of the House and Senate and by a simple majority of voters. Supporters hope the measure goes on the ballot in August 2014.

Nicodemus Turkey Hunting Brings Together Kidney Recipient and Donor

KIDNEY DONOR
Rob Robinson and Gill Alexander, together in Nicodemus Dec. 8, 2012, after Robinson donated a kidney to Alexander on Nov. 26.

“Nobody but God could put us together like that.”

That’s the belief of two men, Gil Alexander, a kidney transplant recipient who lives in Nicodemus, and his donor, who lives a thousand miles away.

Rob Robinson of Eupona, Mississippi, is a turkey hunter and has been hunting for several years on Alexander’s farm land north of town.

“I’ve had kidney disease for about 20 years,” says Alexander.  “I had to go on dialysis about a year and a half ago.  It’s pretty restrictive.”

Robinson has a friend who lives in Olathe and had been hunting on Alexander’s property for about 40 years.

“I came out from Mississippi to western Kansas with him that first year,” says Robinson, “and Gil and I have become good friends.  I know what it’s like to be on a farm, working on equipment.  Gil was stuck on that machine every day and I just wanted to help him out.”

So, Robinson signed up for the kidney donor program at K-U Medical Center.

“Next thing I hear, Rob’s a match and agrees to be a kidney donor for me,” says Alexander.  “He was worried about me,” laughs Robinson.  “Gil came to see me in my hospital bed before I could even get out of it.”

Gil Alexander’s kidney transplant was November 26 in Kansas City.  He and his donor, Rob Robinson, were together again just 10 days later, December 8, at the Nicodemus Holiday Open House.

Both men say the transplant experience has strengthened their spirituality and their friendship.

Polar Plunge is “All Wet”

POLAR PLUNGE What a HootThe air temperature was about 40 degrees Saturday morning in Hays for the fourth annual Polar Plunge Special Olympics fundraiser.  The high hit 56 degrees, but at 11 o’clock, the crowd surrounding the fence at America’s Value Inn motel, was bundled up, unlike the participants.

This was the first year Ellis County Sheriff’s detective Scott Braun “took the plunge” with team “Chill Seekers.”

“It was cold, not quite as cold as I expected, but I didn’t stay in the water very long,”  said Braun, “and then I headed right for the hot tub.”

Prizes are awarded for teams and individuals raising the most money; teams are also judged on plunging technique, and their costumes.  The Carrico Implement “Polar Plungers” team, of course, wore plungers on their heads.

Polar Plunges are the largest and most popular fundraising event for Special Olympics Kansas.  Some of the money comes back to Hays which hosts the annual Special Olympics Kansas basketball tournament.

Would first-time polar plunger Scott Braun do it again?  “Oh, yes, you’ll see me again next year,” he vows.

KHAZ Country Music News: Randy Travis Expected to Plead Guilty to Drunk Driving This Week

khaz randy travis 20120925Randy Travis is expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor drunk driving charges later this week in Sherman, TX.  That’s according to Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown, who tells ABC News Radio the plea is expected to happen during Travis’s court appearance Thursday.  The charge is punishable by one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

This particular case stems from Travis’s August 7 arrest after he veered off the road in his Pontiac Grand Am and was discovered in the road naked, according to authorities. He was reportedly combative at the scene and had a blood-alcohol level of .15. The legal limit for driving is .08.

Travis’s lawyer, Larry Freeman, tells ABC News Radio that Travis will plead no contest to the charges against him. Speaking of the August incident, Freeman says, “It was an unfortunate event, but the reality is it occurred and what we’ve worked out with the DA is a way to put it behind Randy so he can put it behind him so he can go on and take advantage of the opportunities before him in 2013.”

Get Concessions Delivered to Your Seat at Gross Coliseum Thanks to App

rp_primary_OrdrIt_release_photoA smartphone app that allows you to order concessions and have them delivered to your seat has made it to Gross Memorial Coliseum. So now you won’t miss any of the action.

OrdrIt, is a smartphone app that allows fans to order their favorite concession foods from their seat and then someone deliver the order straight to them. The new technology will debut on Wednesday night (Jan. 30) at Gross Memorial Coliseum for the basketball games against Central Oklahoma.

According to the Fort Hays State Athletics website the process works like this:

Search your Smart Phone App store for OrdrIt. After downloading the free App, select Gross Memorial Coliseum on the menu when you open the App. You are then able to order available concession items without ever having to move from your seat. Campus crime statistics were calculated per 1,000 students and reported for the 2011 calendar year. StateUniversity.com analyzed crime statistics for 450 colleges and universities and assigned a safety rating to each school.

Within the state, Kansas State was rank second and Washburn third.
