Update: Structure Fire Reported in Downtown Hays

10:30 -Hays Firefighters were called to a fire at a cabinet shop at 112 East 9th Street Friday morning around 8 am.

Five trucks responded, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

The spontaneous combustion of oily rags in a trash container is the suspected cause. Fire Chief Gary Brown says rags soaked in oils such as wood stains, cooking oil and paint should be placed in a metal can with a lid.

 

8:45 am – A fire reported at 112 E 9th Street in Hays is out. The call came in to the fire department around 8 am.

The cause has not been determined.

Ex-Church Vicar In Kansas Pleads Innocent To Sex Charges

Screen Shot 2013-01-04 at 7.44.33 AMA former church vicar in Topeka pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting two young brothers.

32-year-old Hugh Denton Cranford, a former vicar at Faith Lutheran Church, will be tried starting May 6 on three charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child younger than 14.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Cranford, a native of Kingwood, Texas, pleaded not guilty on Thursday.

The mother of the two boys, who are now 7 and 9, testified that her husband and Cranford were friends and the family attended Faith Lutheran. She said her sons played with Cranford and he stayed overnight in their home.

Cranford, a student at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, began his vicarage at Faith Lutheran in July 2011. He was suspended by the seminary in June 2012.

Kansas AG To Seek Anti-Gang Law

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt plans to ask legislators to approve a new law he says will help prosecutors fight gang activity.

The Republican attorney general and former state senator says the recommendation for a new anti-racketeering law is a product of a gang task force he assembled in 2012.

The proposal would let prosecutors go after gangs for alleged patterns of criminal activity as well as single criminal acts. Schmidt says it would be another way to tackle what he calls the rising presence of street gangs in Kansas.

The 2013 legislative session begins Jan. 14.

KHAZ Country Music News: Gary Allan’s Chicago Concert Raises $11,000 for ACM Lifting Lives

Gary Allan‘s December 15 show at Joe’s Bar in Chicago raised a good chunk of change for a good cause. Proceeds from the show totaled $11,000 and will benefit ACM Lifting Lives, the charitable arm of the Academy of Country Music. That money will go to organizations using the power of music in their philanthropic efforts.

This isn’t Gary’s first time working with ACM Lifting Lives. He has previously volunteered with their summer music camp in Nashville, sharing music with campers who have developmental disabilities.

Residents Express Opposition to Restriping

Eight residents spoke to the Hays City Commission Thursday night in opposition to changing 27th to three lanes between Hall and Plum streets.

The residents, including Donna Hansen, live along that stretch and are concerned about losing parking on the south side and increased traffic traveling faster, which may be a safety hazard.

The issue will be discussed again at the next work session on the 17th to give residents who could not attend this meeting an opportunity to speak either for or against the lane reconfiguration.

Gradual Warming Trend Through The Weekend

The weekend will begin on a cool note with highs on Saturday ranging from the mid 30s to near 40 degrees.

More seasonal temperatures can then be expected on Sunday as a gradual warming begins.

This warming trend will continue through the first half of the work week with temperatures rebounding back into the 40s with even a few 50s possible near the Oklahoma border in south central Kansas on Tuesday.

  • TODAY: Sunny, with a high near 35. Wind chill values as low as -1. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph.
  • TONIGHT: Patchy fog after 4am. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low around 13. Wind chill values as low as 5. South southwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Tigers Fall to Northeastern State

Northeastern State hit back-to-back 3-pointers to build a nine-point halftime lead. They then scored the first five points of the second to go up 14 and defeat the Fort Hays State Tigers 76-61 Thursday night in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The loss snaps FHSU’s six-game win streak and drops them 8-3 and 2-1 in the MIAA. Northeastern has won five-straight and improves to 10-1 and 3-0 in the MIAA.

The River Hawks hit six of their first eight 3-point attempts in the second half and led by as many as 20 in the second. The Tigers were held to 4-of-18 shooting beyond the arc and just 39-percent for the game (26-66).

No. 10 Lady Tigers Suffer First Loss of the Season

The No. 10 Fort Hays State Lady Tigers could ‘t overcome 29-percent shooting as they lose for the first time this season, 54-44 at Northeastern State Thursday in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The loss drops FHSU to 10-1 and 2-1 in the MIAA while the River Haws improve to 7-4 and 2-1 in the conference.

The Lady Tigers hit just three of their 21 three-point attempts and just 1-for-11 in the second half.

Northeastern State used a 7-0 run to go up 11 with 8:53 to play. The Lady Tigers answered with an 8-0 run to pull within three but the River Hawks hit back-to-back 3-pointers and pushed the lead to 10 with 4:11 to play. FHSU would only get as close seven the rest of the way.

Highlights 1-3-13

The Lady Tigers scored just one field goal in the first seven minutes and trailed by five three different times in the first half. Their only first half lead came on a Kaiameka Brown baseline jumper that made it 2-0.

Kate Edwards was the only Lady Tiger to reach double-figures with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Roberts Steps Down as Ranking Ag Committee Member

Kansas Senator Pat Roberts announced Thursday he is stepping down as minority leader of the Senate Agriculture Committee but will still reside on it.

Mississippi Republican Senator Thad Cochran, based on seniority, will replace Roberts pending confirmation.

Roberts said in a statement, “No matter whether I hold the gavel, or whether I am the ranking member or whether I am a senior member, agriculture has always been a top priority of my efforts in public service. Nothing will change that. My message to Kansas farmers and ranchers is that I will continue to be your voice and your champion at every turn.”

 

AP Source: Reid, Chiefs Nearing Deal to be Coach

A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Andy Reid is nearing a deal to replace Romeo Crennel as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Reid has no plans to interview for other jobs, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Thursday because they were not authorized to discuss the negotiations.

The Philadelphia Eagles fired Reid on Monday, the same day the Chiefs parted ways with Crennel. Several members of the Chiefs met with Reid, who has also been linked to openings in Arizona and San Diego, for close to nine hours on Wednesday.

Reid was fired after 14 seasons, six division titles and a Super Bowl appearance.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Shared Cozy Christmas in Georgia with Girlfriend Jana Kramer

Brantley Gilbert shared a cozy Christmas with his girlfriend Jana Kramerat his home near Maysville, GA.  Brantley tells ABC News Radio that the couple rode four-wheelers and spent time with friends over the holiday. Brantley and Jana also paid tribute to one of Brantley’s late biker friends.

“We had a memorial ride for a brother of mine, a biker brother of mine that passed away,” Brantley says.  “She got on the back with me and rode around on the new Harley and stuff.”

Brantley also hosted a party for the people that work with him on December 22.  He was expecting a small get-together, but the party maxed out at about 75 attendees.

Says Brantley, “The county police were out there directing traffic.  We had people parked across the street and they were all walking around in my house, and the whole time I’m thinking, ‘How in the world am I gonna clean all this crap up tomorrow?’

While Brantley loves his home in Georgia, he’s spending more time in Nashville these days due to business and his relationship with Jana.  On top of that, Brantley’s gearing up to launch the new leg of his Hell on Wheels tour January 31 in Independence, MO.
