New Math for Local Schools?

Boldra 2State Representative Sue Boldra of Hays serves on the House Education committee. Among the items they are considering, a bill that would force the state education department to write new math and English standards.

The standards would replace the Common Core math and English standards adopted in 2010. The bill would specifically prohibit the state and school districts from using the Common Core standards or spending any money on them.

Deputy education commissioner Brad Neuenswander has told the education board  that writing new standards and tests to go with them would take two years and cost millions of dollars.

Boldra will attend Saturday’s “Eggs and Issues Legislative Forum” presented by the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce, 8:30a.m. in the Fort Hays State University Robbins Center.  Also on Saturday, Boldra along with 40th District Senator Ralph Ostmeyer, Grinnell; and 110th District Representative Travis Couture-Lovelady,  Palco will also host town hall meetings at 11 a.m. in Victoria at the Former St. John’s Rest Home on 7th street and at 2 p.m. in Ellis in the city council chamber room.
