KWO Approves Release from Cedar Bluff

ks water officeThe Kansas Water Office says it will begin releasing water Monday from Cedar Bluff Reservoir to help recharge Hays water wells.

The announcement on Tuesday says the releases will recharge wells along the Smoky Hill River near Schoenchen.

The  release will use virtually all of the 1,247 acre-feet of water left in an artificial recharge pool, or approximately 406 million gallons.

Unlike earlier, similar releases, the city of Russell isn’t joining the request for water. That city instead will pursue other water supplies near its Pfeifer wellfield. Russell owns water in Cedar Bluff and could seek the release of up to 2,000 acre-feet of water.

Police: Children Present During Lottery Winner’s Meth Fueled Celebration, Explosion

Authorities say two children were present when a drug-fueled celebration of a $75,000 winning lottery ticket resulted in an explosion at a south-central Kansas duplex.

Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte said Tuesday that the 10- and 6-year-old girls weren’t injured. The Wichita Eagle reports that the explosion happened Friday after a man refueled butane torches that he and his brother planned to use to smoke drugs. Eventually, butane vapor reached the pilot light in the furnace.

One of the brothers was treated at a hospital after sustaining second-degree burns on 10 percent of his body. He hasn’t been arrested, but his 25-year-old brother has been taken into custody on suspicion of drug possession.

Nolte says the children’s mother is the girlfriend of the brother who was burned.

Weather May Impact Search in KC Plaza Explosion

Cadaver dogs are searching the smoldering remains of a Kansas City restaurant that burned to the ground following a gas explosion and massive blaze, a fire official says today. Searchers are concerned that the impending snow storm will have an impact on what they are able to accomplish.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James told KMBC that a woman remains missing and a man, who was believed to be missing, was located at a hospital Tuesday night.

The gas explosion occurred just after 6 p.m. Tuesday and the resulting fire completely destroyed JJ’s restaurant. Officials say more than a dozen people were injured, with at least two reported in critical condition.

The cause of the blast remains under investigation; however, a city official earlier said it was believed to have been caused accidentally by a utility contractor.
