Hays Police arrested a 20-year old man just before 7 on Saturday morning. Sgt. Dan Koerner told Hays Post that the suspect was intoxicated and taken into custody for disorderly conduct in the 300 block of West 16th street. Check the Hays Post arrest report later this week for additional details.

Rep. Boldra: More Deregulation to Modernize State Telecommunication Laws
The first “Eggs and Issues” of the 2013 session presented Saturday by the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce was also a first for all three Kansas legislators.
111th District Rep. Sue Boldra, R- Hays, and 110th District Rep. Travis Couture-Lovelady, R-Palco, are freshmen. Longtime legislator Sen. Ralph Ostmeyer, R-Grinnell, now has the city of Hays in his 40th District, following redistricting.
Audience members in the Fort Hays State University Robbins Center had lots of questions for the trio following their opening remarks.
Rep. Boldra is a member of the House Utilities and Telecommunications Committee. A bill that supporters say would continue the deregulation of telecommunication companies in Kansas sailed through initial passage in the House Friday with bi-partisan support. House Bill 2201 will be considered for a final vote Monday.
“Fewer and fewer of us have ‘landlines,'” said Boldra, “and this bill is intended to modernize existing regulations, which are used to provide support for technological investment. These dollars will be shifted to fund newer broadband technologies and other advanced services, further connecting Kansans.”
“It’s moving telecommunications towards more of a utility,” she explained.
The measure would reduce funding requirements of the Kansas Universal Service Fund, thus reducing consumer telephone bills.
Opponents say the Kansas Corporation Commission would no longer would be able to assist customers when their phone service quality is unacceptable, and telecommunication companies would no longer be required to participate in the Kansas Lifeline Service Program, which provides discounts for basic telephone service for low-income Kansans.
Hays FD Tests FHSU Water System Improvements
The Hays Fire Department is testing fire hydrants on the Fort Hays State University campus today.
The university recently made improvements to its water system, and the city fire department is determining how much water is available for firefighting on campus.
Firefighter Justin Choitz says results of the hydrant tests will be provided to various entities.
Slight discoloration of the water supply might be encountered, although there are no health risks to the consumer. Drivers are asked to avoid driving through water discharging from a fire hydrant during the short flushing period.

Southwest Kansas Marine Earns Bronze Star
A senior staff noncommissioned officer from southwest Kansas was awarded the Bronze Star last week for his heroic actions leading Marines after a 2011 ambush in Afghanistan’s Sangin district.
First Sgt. Bradley G. Simmons, Liberal, received the medal with combat distinguishing device during a Jan. 25 ceremony aboard the dock landing ship Rushmore. The amphib is deployed in the U.S. Central Command region with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton, Calif., according to a Marine Corps news story announcing the award.
Simmons, 34, who is serving as the sergeant major of Combat Logistics Battalion 15, was credited with leading a quick-reaction force against an ambush on a squad of Marines that killed two.
At the time of the ambush, Simmons was the company first sergeant of Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 8.
When enemy gunfire pinned down the squad on Aug. 7, 2011, Simmons ran from his vehicle, crossed an open road and directed his vehicle to fire toward the enemy soldiers. He dodged enemy fire to organize a fire team toward a nearby hill to outflank the enemy force, which was stopped by close-air support.

GIRLS: TMP 54 Plainville 27
Heather Ruder scored 24 points and her team roared out to a 34-7 halftime lead on Plainville and never looked back. Plainville struggled without senior Hannah Friend scoring only 2 points in the 2nd Quarter. TMP is now 6-12 on the season and will play at Colby on Tuesday Night.

TMP trailed by 10 points a couple of times in the first half but fought back to within 6, 35-29 at halftime. The Monarchs were forced to make an adjustment against Plainville Junior Hadley Gillum who had 19 points at the half and adjust they did. Gillum was held to 4 second half points and saw his team get outscored in the second half, 44-22.
Jordan Gottschalk led TMP with 18 points, Ryan Mayorga added 14, Shane Zimmerman 13 and Tanner Unrein 10. The win moves TMP to 7-11 on the year and they too will play at Colby on Tuesday.

Hays High Splits Meeting With Garden City
Hays High 43 – Garden City 47 (Ladies)
The Hays High Lady Indians led for the first 27:10 of the game on Friday night in Garden City. It was the last 4:50 that they couldn’t regain that lead, falling to the state ranked Buffaloes 47-43.
Turnovers hurt the Indians, totally 26 in the game. Hays was also out shot at the free throw line 27-8 in the loss. Garden hit 18 of their 27 attempts, while the Indians made 4 of 8.
The biggest shot of the game, that seemed to turn the momentum to Garden City was at the end of the third quarter. The Indians scored a field goal with less than ten second left on the clock. That was more than enough time for Jackensie Tornero to hit her only field goal…a running three pointer from just past mid-court that hit only net and pulled Garden City within one point.
Hays shot 18 of 40 in the game and made 3 of 4 three pointers. Garden City was 13 of 43 and made 3 of 11 threes.
The Indians were led by Katelyn Schumacher with 17 points and 9 rebounds, her second consecutive game with those exact humbers.
Hays is now 8-10 and 3-3 in the WAC. Garden City claims the conference title at 7-0 with one game left for them to play in conference. Garden City is 16-3 overall.

Hays High 45 – Garden City 36 (Boys)
Hays and Garden City scored 128 points the first time the two met up, with Hays coming out on top 74-54. The two teams combined barely cleared Hays’ winning score from the first game in the Indian’s 45-36 win on Friday night in Garden City.
Garden led just once in the game at 6-4, then Hays took at lead at 8-6 to end the first quarter. Hays would not surrender the lead rest of the night. The Indians led by four at half time and eight after three quarters. It wasn’t easy though. Garden City got with in one point of a tie on five different occasions in the second and third quarter.
Hays did eventually push the lead to ten in the fourth quarter twice. Garden City got with in five at 41-36, but Kade Parker and Nick Petz each hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Both teams shot 31% on the evening, Hays 15-48 and Garden City 14-45. Neither team shot well beyond the arc, Hays 3-18 and Garden City 4-18. Hays though made the most of their opportunities at the line going 12 of 15, Garden City was 4-4.
The Indians held a significant advantage on the boards 42-20.
The Indians were led by Brady Werth’s fourth career double-double, 19 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Petz tallied a second consecutive double figure performance with 11.
Hays improves to 12-6 on the season and 4-2 in conference. Garden City ranked 6th in 6A this week, falls to 12-7 and 3-4 in conference.
The win for Hays keeps the Indians in the race for a conference championship. They head to Dodge City on Tuesday to take on the conference leading Red Demons who are 5-1 in league after a win over Great Bend on Friday.
A win for the Red Demons will secure the conference championship. A win for Hays High will tie the Indians and Red Demons atop the standings with one game remaining.
KHAZ Country Music News: Chris Young Tells Katie Couric: “I Married My Sister”
Chris Young recently officiated his sister’s wedding ceremony after getting his license to perform the rite. He revealed that tidbit during his appearance on Katie earlier this week, but host Katie Couric misheard Chris at first when he told her, “I married my sister.” Katie said with a laugh, “I thought that was a whole different situation. I was like seriously? I was thinking the incest thing!”
Chris shot back, “I’m glad I stuck my foot in my mouth this early.”
Chris continues his current tour with a headlining show at the Best Buy Theater in New York City Friday night.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kip Moore to Appear on ABC’s “Nashville” February 27
Kip Moore is set to play himself on ABC’s Nashville February 27. He’ll join Vince Gill, Pam Tillis and Dan Auerbach of the rock group The Black Keys in that episode in a scene involving the character Deacon’s birthday celebration.
Kip is a fan of Nashville and catches it whenever he can. Though he thinks the show portrays the country music industry in a pretty good light, Kip says, “It’s TV. You gotta put the drama in there, and you gotta do stuff entertaining for people.”
You won’t find Kip throwing tantrums or quitting tours like the country stars on Nashville though. He adds, “I don’t think that everybody believes that’s exactly how Nashville is. Tell people to lighten up a little bit, you know.”
Brantley Gilbert and Chris Young have also appeared on Nashville in the past few weeks. Nashville airs Wednesday nights at 10 Eastern time on ABC.

Arrest Made In Connection With Monday’s Escape of Convicted Child Murderer
A Salina man has been arrested in connection with the escape of convicted murderer Antonio Brown.
Eric Lee Terry, 425 Purdue Ave., Salina, was arrested on a felony charge of obstructing apprehension or prosecution.
He is currently in the Saline County Jail. Details regarding his involvement have not been released. According to authorities, additional arrests are possible.
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service continue to investigate Monday’s escape of Brown from the Saline County Jail.
Brown turned himself in to Authorities Wednesday night in Wichita.
On Friday, Undersheriff Dave Dunstan said there was no new information to release on how Brown was able to get to Wichita from Salina after getting out of a holding cell on Monday afternoon.
