Friends of the Hays Dog Park continue to look for ways to raise money for something they believe will enhance the quality of life for many residents, and of course, for their dogs,
“We’ve raised $15,000 so far, ” says member Tiffany Reddig. “To try and get more grants and other donations, we’re going to partner with the Heartland Community Foundation,” she says.
The group met Sunday afternoon at the Hays Public Library to discuss new ideas for fundraisers and elect new officers.
The city of Hays is reserving six acres at the Bickle/Schmidt Sports Complex for building the dog park. The group has two years to come up with the $127,000 necessary for a basic facility.
“We’ve had bake sales, a huge garage sale and we’re selling t-shirts, ” Reddig says. “We’re also selling engraved bricks for $100 which will pave walkways in the dog park.”
The biggest expense is 78-thousand dollars for a six-foot perimeter fence.
People interested in joining Friends of the Hays Dog Park should check the group’s Facebook page.
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton keep their relationship going strong despite their hectic schedules thanks to three simple rules. Miranda recently shared those guidelines with E!, and good communication is at the top of the list.
“If you can’t jump on the phone to chat with your significant other, keep up the texting,” Miranda says. “Seriously, try this out! A simple text with those three little words during a workday can make the world of difference.”
A relationship can’t survive on texting alone. Miranda stresses that spending time with your man is essential to keeping the spark alive. She says, “No matter how busy your week is, you need at least one night just the two of you to rekindle the flame.”
Finally, Miranda suggests getting a dog to add some fun to your home life.
“I’m a passionate dog lover,” she says. “Don’t forget your four-legged friends need unconditional love too!”
Miranda will have to send her Valentine’s Day wishes to Blake over the phone this year. She has a show with Dierks Bentley Thursday, February 14 in Dekalb, IL.

The I-135/I-70 Drug Task Force is seeking federal prosecution of two Salina residents for an illegal narcotics distribution operation.
Arrested Friday were 22-year-old Abigail Soto-Torres and 22-year-old Jon Reed Woodbridge.
Woodbridge was being sought by the U.S. Marshall’s Service, Fugitive Task Force. He had recently been released from federal prison and was considered to be an absconder.
Soto-Torres was found to be in possession of 1.35 pounds of “Ice” methamphetamine with a street value of $61,000. Woodbridge was found in possession of $500 in suspected drug proceeds and drug owe sheets. Law enforcement believes Soto-Torres and Woodbridge and additional suspects are responsible for importing and distributing multiple kilos of methamphetamine over the past several months.
The arrest of Soto-Torres and Woodbridge are believed to be connected to the arrest of Filiberto Nunez-Garcia. Filiberto Nunez-Garcia and Abigail Soto-Torres are common law spouses.
It is the belief of law enforcement that these arrests and drug seizures are connected to a much larger drug organization known as the Sinaloa Cartel, based in Mexico.
Further arrest are expected as this investigation continues.

Brad Paisley‘s new album, Wheelhouse, is due out April 9 featuring the hit single, “Southern Comfort Zone.” That first single threw a curveball to country fans with the gospel choir and clips from The Andy Griffith Show peppering the track. Brad has a few more surprises in store for fans on Wheelhouse, including a collaboration with rapper-turned actor LL Cool J. Brad had met LL before, but he got a mutual friend to hook them up in the studio for this project.
Brad says of LL Cool J, “He’s a great songwriter, and more importantly, he’s a great human being. He’s a really nice man, and he is a class act. And I am lucky to associate with him at all.”
Brad also tapped Charlie Daniels for a guest appearance on Wheelhouse in a way fans won’t expect. All of this experimentation is an effort on Brad’s part to test the limits of country music.
“The stuff is really meant to say things that I didn’t think you could say,” Brad says of his new material. He points out that in other genres, like rap, artists can’t really shock their listeners because the fans have heard it all before.
Says Brad, “I’m a little envious of that. In country music, there’s quite a few boundaries, and I think there should be boundaries, but I also wonder what those are. And that’s what I set out to explore with this.”

Father Earl Meyer at St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria told Hays Post this morning that he greatly admired Pope Benedict XVI. “I and all the other priests at the Friary were very surprised at this morning’s news. It certainly puts a new perspective on future Popes,” said Meyer. “It really sets a precedence here (resigning)”
Benedict, the 85 year old leader of the Catholic church announced his decision to step down during a meeting of Vatican cardinals this morning.
“Benedict had a very clever mind and great understanding,” said Meyer. “His 3 books on the life of Jesus are wonderful for anyone who wants a better understanding of the life of Christ.”
Before the end of the month a conclave of Cardinals will elect a new leader for the Catholic Church- Pope Benedict XVI last day in office will be on Feb. 28. He said it was because he was simply too infirm to carry on. He becomes the first pontiff in 600 years to step down. Stay tuned to Eagle radio and check back with Hays Post for more on this story.
Below is the full text of Benedict’s resignation letter.
Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
From the Vatican, 10 February 2013
BENEDICTUS PP XVI
The persistent drought is taking a toll on producers of ethanol, with corn becoming so scarce that nearly two dozen ethanol plants have been forced to halt production.
The Renewable Fuels Association, an ethanol industry trade group, provided data to The Associated Press showing that 20 of the nation’s 211 ethanol plants have ceased production over the past year, including five in January. While most expect to resume, they won’t likely do so until after 2013 corn is harvested in late August or September.
Industry experts don’t expect an ethanol shortage because millions of barrels are stockpiled and the remaining 191 plants are still producing.
But there is growing concern about the high price of corn and what happens if the drought lingers through another corn-growing season.
A Johnson County businessman says he will seek the 2014 Democratic nomination for Kansas secretary of state in an attempt to unseat Republican incumbent Kris Kobach.
Randy Rolston of Mission Hills issued a news release saying he aspires to become only the second Democrat ever elected to the secretary post in Kansas.
Rolston graduated from the University of Kansas and is president and co-founder of Victorian Trading Co., a Lenexa-based mail-order company.
Among his proposals is a plan to increase youth participation in elections by allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote when they get their driver’s licenses.
Rolston has given his campaign a $200,000 loan and believes he will have to raise $1 million in donations to defeat Kobach.
