KDOT: Clean up Kansas

Litter along the highways has a negative impact on everyone, both residents and visitors to Kansas.

KDOTParticipating in the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program can have a positive impact on helping to keep the highways clean. With nearly 10,000 miles of highways in Kansas, new groups can always join.

Some of the urban stretches of roadway are open to adopt, and numerous sections in the rural areas are available as well. Groups are asked to sign a two-year agreement with the program, and several groups have been with the program since it started in Kansas in 1990.

Groups clean their sections of roadway three times a year at their convenience. Most choose to schedule a clean-up time in the spring, summer and fall.

Adopt-A-Highway groups are participating in the annual Clean Up Kansas Campaign which is taking place during April. All Adopt-A-Highway groups are encouraged but not required to participate in the statewide event. Motorists are asked to use extra caution as people with bright orange vests will be working next to the highways.

Youth groups with members at least 11 years old and adequate adult supervision are also eligible. KDOT provides each group safety training, trash bags, orange vests and signs for their adopted stretch of highway.

For more information, contact the KDOT office in your area.

HUTCHINSON, Kansas (AP) — A Reno County judge has sentenced a Hutchinson man to more than 59 years in prison for abducting a woman from a grocery store and raping her.

Gooch turned his face away from the camera when the woman’s husband read a statement. Then, he leaned back so that his face couldn’t be seen by the camera when the woman spoke.

He asked to return to his cell before the judge pronounced the sentence.

The victim was abducted in May 2012 after going to a Hutchinson grocery store to shop for her daughter’s graduation dinner. When she returned to her mini-van, she looked in her rear-view mirror and s

Car vs Taco Bell Update

Just after 2:30 on Saturday afternoon, Hays Police and emergency crews were dispatched to the Taco Bell, 1730 Vine Street.  A car hit the Taco Bell restaurant building. It didn’t happen in the drive through. The driver was apparently parking at the restaurant’s front door. It appears the driver’s foot may have hit the accelerator instead of the brake. An assistant manager who answered the phone at Taco Bell told Hays Post that nobody was injured. The store manager was on the way to the scene. Passengers in the car refused treatment.  Damage was to the building facade.

Stay tuned to Eagle Radio and Check Hays Post for details as they become available.

No. 17 Tiger Softball Takes Two at Lindenwood

FHSU-SB-HolubThe Fort Hays State softball team ran their winning streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Lindenwood Saturday afternoon in St. Charles, Missouri. The Tigers were 11-1, five inning run-rule winners in game one then scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the sixth and win the second contest 3-2. The Tigers are now 27-5 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA. The Lions have lost seven of their last nine and are now 11-17 and 4-8 in the MIAA.

Game 1: #17 Fort Hays State 11, Lindenwood 1 (5 innings)
Maddie Holub (14-1) backed up her no-hitter at Truman the day before with a complete-game one-hitter Saturday against the Lions. The TMP-Marian senior allowed the one run on one hit, striking out nine and walking none.

Amanda Vaupel and Danie Brinkmann both drove in three. Brinkmann had a two-run single in the Tigers five-run fourth. Vaupel added a two-run double in FHSU’s three-run fifth.

Holub added a solo homer, her 14th of the season, in the Tigers two-run second.

Game 2: #17 Fort Hays State 3, Lindenwood  2
Maddie Holub drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Tigers to the sweep. A Jenna Lang double and two walks loaded the bases for Holub who then recorded the final six outs for her third save of the season.

Holub walked two in the sixth but managed to work out of a bases-loaded jam with two strike outs to end the sixth. Holub induced a grounder to first base to end the game after giving up a two-out double.

Paxton Duran (11-4) picks up the win, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three.

The Tigers grabbed an early 2-0 lead, scoring one in the first on a throwing error and one in the second on a Courtney Dobson single.

The Lions scored two in the fifth to tie the game.

KDHE on AIDS Quarantine Misunderstanding

TOPEKA, Kan.—Contrary to recent media coverage, no version of Kansas Substitute House Bill 2183 would have ever allowed for isolation of persons infected withkdhe or quarantine of persons exposed to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

“There has been a great deal of concern in recent days about Kansas Substitute House Bill 2183, which is supported by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and is under current consideration by the Kansas Legislature. Much of the recent media coverage has been based on the false premise that, if enacted, the bill would allow for isolation of persons infected with or quarantine of persons exposed to HIV,” stated Charles Hunt, State Epidemiologist. “It is not and never was the state’s intent to seek the authority for isolation or quarantine of persons related to HIV.”

KDHE has consistently stated that isolation and quarantine actions would not be allowable for HIV based on the enactment of this bill.

This bill is about occupational safety and health, and the original version of the bill was introduced on behalf of emergency medical services workers to address gaps in current law regarding exposures to HIV and other infectious diseases. The substitute bill – which has been the source of the public controversy – was introduced as a simpler and more streamlined approach to accomplish the objectives of the original bill. It will provide KDHE the authority to address many of the details in the original bill in administrative regulations instead.

“The law requires isolation and quarantine be based on what is reasonable and medically necessary, and neither of those thresholds are met with respect to HIV,” Hunt said.

Hunt’s testimony to the House Health and Human Services Committee and the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, as well as his open letter from March 21, can be found on KDHE’s website at the following link: https://www.kdheks.gov/testimony/index.htm
