House to Take Important Abortion Vote

The Kansas House is preparing for a final vote on a bill that would block tax breaks for abortion providers and bar public schools from using sex education Abortion 001instruction from abortion providers.

Approval on final action Wednesday would send the measure to the Senate. The Republican-dominated House has an anti-abortion majority, so the measure was expected to pass.

Senate GOP leaders are promising their chamber will consider the bill quickly.

The bill would prevent groups providing abortions from receiving tax exemptions or credits that go to other nonprofit groups or health care providers. It would also bar women who claim income tax deductions for medical expenses from including the cost of abortion services.

The legislation also prohibits abortion providers from furnishing materials or instructors for sex education classes in schools.

Kansas Woman Sentenced For Embezzlement

probation

AP — A former employee of a northeast Kansas credit union has been sentenced in federal court to two years of probation for embezzling $85,000 from the company.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Deborah Bomia, of Enterprise, must also pay $85,000 in restitution to Enterprise Credit Union under the sentence she received Tuesday.

Bomia pleaded guilty last July to the crime, which occurred between April 2005 and August 2011. She admitted kiting checks between accounts in her name at the credit union to create fictitious balances.

Prosecutors said Bomia would record a large deposit in the credit union’s general ledger near the end of the month but not make the deposit for several weeks, when another large check would be drafted out of her credit union checking account.

Olathe OKs Google Fiber deal

google
AP — Olathe officials have approved an agreement that paves the way for Google’s super-fast Internet service to be installed in the southern Johnson County community.

The Olathe City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the Google Fiber agreement.

The Olathe deal is similar to other deals in the Kansas City area, where Google has been slowly connecting several neighborhoods with its high-speed service. The deal gives Olathe 5 percent of gross receipts generated by Google selling the service in the Johnson County suburb. The agreement also promises free 1-gigabit-per-second connections to up to four public facilities for up to 10 years.

If Google deploys a Wi-Fi network in Olathe, that wireless Internet access will be free to the public for at least five years.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kacey Musgraves Avoids the Obvious on “Same Trailer Different Park,” Now on Sale

khaz kacey musgraves 20130320Newcomer Kacey Musgraves has already made a splash with her top 10 debut single, “Merry Go Round,” and now her debut project, Same Trailer Different Park, is available in stores and online.  Kacey lifted the title of the album from a lyric in “Merry Go Round”: “Same hurt in every heart/same trailer, different park.”

It’s one of her favorite lines on the album, and she explains, “It kind of just means we’re all kind of in this together.  We’re all hurt the same way.  We all feel the same way, although we’re all different.  That’s why I love it.”

Kacey could have just made her debut album self-titled or called it Merry Go Round, but something so obvious just didn’t suit her or the music on the album.

“I kind of love it when album titles make people think,” Kacey says.

Kacey is performing songs from Same Trailer Different Park during her set on Kenny Chesney‘s No Shoes Nation tour through August.  They’ve got a show in Albany, NY Thursday night.

Budget Debate Could Last All Day

State capitol buildingKansas House members expect a debate on taxes to focus on proposals to lower the sales tax and divert highway funds to other parts of the budget.

A bill on Wednesday’s agenda would follow up on income tax cuts enacted last year by promising future reductions in income tax rates each year if overall state revenues grow more than 2 percent.

Republican Gov. Sam Brownback proposed more aggressive income tax cuts this year.

Brownback wants to cancel a decrease in the sales tax scheduled by law for July. The House bill would reduce the tax as planned.

The governor wants to keep the sales tax at its current rate to stabilize the budget. The House plan does it by diverting $382 million highway funds to other uses.

Fifth Year for Jana Mackey Day of Service

jana mackeyThe fifth annual Jana Mackey Day of Service brought together community members and Fort Hays State University students and staff to honor the life of a women’s rights advocate.

Jana Mackey grew up in Hays and graduated from Hays High School in 2000.  She was killed by her former boyfriend in 2008, in Lawrence.  Mackey had just finished her first year of law school at K-U.

Her mother is Dr. Christi Brungardt, FHSU Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies.

“We had four different service projects underway in the basement of Wiest Hall,” said Brungardt.

“Volunteers packaged 300 bags of personal supplies of soap, toothpaste, deodorant, which were donated to us.  We took them to the Community Assistance Center which is always in short supply of this kind of stuff for their clients,” she said.

More volunteers found an unused corner of Chuck’s Place to write thank-you notes via social media which were sent to members of Congress supporting recent passage of the “Violence Against Women Act.”

The other two service projects involved making cards to be sent to “Hugs for Hopes” for children, and distribution of informational fliers around Hays from several non-profit organizations.

Controversial Scholarship Bill May not Benefit TMP-Marian

The House education committee has discussed a bill granting $10 million annually in state tax breaks to finance a new scholarship program for students attending K-12 private schools. Portions of the bill are controversial. However, it could have a dramatic impact on Catholic education. Thomas More Prep-Marian principal Bill DeWill told Hays Post, “It may be helpful I’m not sure. I do support it because the program does have some merit and might open a new opportunity for a student to attend a Catholic School.

State law allows donations to non-traditional schools but this law,TMP slogan HB 2400, would create a way for directing gifts to benefit disabled or low-income students who want to enroll outside the public school system.

“TMP-Marian is a stewardship school,” explained DeWitt. “We are fortunate to have the financial support through the Heartland Parish. We even have programs that assist non-Catholic families who want to attend school at TMP.

“The Kansas labor market has continued to improve adding more than 19,000 private sector jobs this past year,” said Lana Gordon, Secretary of Labor. “This is a positive start for 2013 that we hope to see continue.”
