Kansas Mentors Announces Grant Winners

Kansas Mentors (KM) is pleased to announce more than $45,000 in funding to eleven mentoring programs to help offset the costs of background checks conducted through the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

Kansas Mentors Grant RecipientsIn 2012, Kansas Mentors was awarded $100,000 from Volunteer Kansas to distribute funds to Kansas mentoring programs conducting KBI background checks on mentors. KM is distributing $58,000 in funds during 2013.

“Kansas’ mentoring programs are reporting significant declines in funding while an increase in the need for services,” Coach Bill Snyder, chair of Kansas Mentors said. “These funds are a strategic investment to ensure more young Kansans have access to a safe and caring adult role model.”

Background checks are an essential component of the screening process to help ensure the safety of youth involved in mentoring programs. The cost of criminal background checks, however, is substantial considering every mentor should complete and pass a check before they can begin mentoring. This can be a huge funding barrier that can potentially limit the number of young people a program serves or even worse, put youth in danger should a mentoring program forgo the background check because of the cost. This grant serves as an avenue to bridge the gap and encourage mentoring programs to continue doing important checks on potential volunteer mentors.

Kansas Mentors is currently partnered with more than 175 mentoring programs serving all 105 Kansas counties. The organization is committed to providing every young Kansan access to a caring and quality mentor through recruitment, awareness, and training efforts. Funding is still available for this grant. Mentoring programs interested in applying for funding can visit Kansas Mentors at www.KansasMentors.org.

Kansas AG: Be Wary of Door to Door Sales

A Utah home security alarm company has agreed to pay restitution, fines and investigative costs after being accused of violating Kansas consumer protection laws, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.Derek-Schmidt-150x150

Vivint, Inc., has issued refunds to 19 Kansas consumers and paid $55,000 in civil penalties and reimbursement of the state’s investigative costs. In addition, the company has agreed to abide by the Kansas Consumer Protection Act in future transactions. The settlement of this case was filed as a consent judgment in Shawnee County District Court. The case against the company resulted from an investigation by the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.

“Kansas law regulates the conduct of door-to-door sales to ensure that Kansans who are solicited at their homes are not rushed or pressured into making a purchase,” Schmidt said. “We take seriously our responsibility to enforce the law.”

The company was accused of using a variety of deceptive practices while going door-to-door offering to install new home security systems or replace existing systems. The Attorney General’s Office said the salesmen failed to advise the consumers of their rights under the Kansas Consumer Protection Act and did not disclose all costs associated with switching alarm system providers.

Attorney General Schmidt reminded Kansans to be wary of door-to-door offers, especially when the salesman is pushing unsolicited goods or services. Consumers should always seek multiple bids and consult reputable, local companies. Any consumers who feel they may be victims of deceptive or illegal business practices are encouraged to file a report with the Attorney General’s Office by calling 1-800-432-2310 or visiting www.ag.ks.gov.

Screen Shot 2013-03-16 at 2.03.25 PMUpdate: Ellis County Registered Offender Map

The registry of offenders is compiled by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and lists the names, offenses, and addresses of Kansans convicted of certain sexual, violent, and drug crimes. Click on the map for a closer view.

The registry includes information about offenders who committed crimes after April 14, 1994.

Three type of offenders are listed in the registry: sexual, violent and drug offenders.

There are a wide range of crimes that can land someone on the registry. For instance, someone might have to register as a sex offender for crimes such as prostitution, sexual battery or rape.

Violent crimes that can require registration include such crimes as murder, kidnapping, or an assault with a deadly weapon.

Drug crimes that require registration can include drug manufacturing, selling or possession of certain substances.

Drones at KSU?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Military - Predator Drone 002Kansas State University is part of a team of three universities and multiple businesses vying to be picked by the Federal Aviation Administration as one of six test site for drones.

Kurt Barnhart of Kansas State says the team includes members outside Kansas and that they envision the test site including multiple locations. In Kansas, the drones would be tested primarily in airspace near Salina.

Barnhart declined to provide other details, including the names of its university and business partners, saying providing too much information could put the team at a competitive disadvantage.

The FAA made a request for proposals last month. The agency is required to develop sites where civilian and military drones can be tested in preparation for integration into U.S. airspace that’s currently limited to manned aircraft.

Soroptimist Annual Melodrama

Soroptimist logoJustice, and a homemade meal, will be served March 23, when local members of Soroptimist International of Hays present their 17th annual dinner theater production, “Big Bad.”

Running once only, the production will be Saturday, March 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the TMP-Marian cafeteria, 1701 Hall St., with a homemade spaghetti dinner, including desserts and drinks. The play, presented in the theater, will follow.

Starring the most notorious criminal in the fairy-tale world, Big Bad Wolf, the play is staged in a courtroom where the villain faces his motley collection of victims: The three little pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, Grandmother Hood, and the shepherd in charge of the boy who called wolf.

With a cast of 14, several newcomers to the Soroptimists’ productions will join the seasoned cast of cut-ups.

In her debut Soroptimist performance, new member Sase Fleenor takes on the role of Sydney Grimm, news anchor for the Enchanted Forest. She attended last year’s Soroptimist production and said she was excited to participate this year.

“I am a makeup artist and learned that skill and acting back in high school, and it’s been an awesome reminder of my youth while working towards such a great benefit for the women and young girls in our community,” Fleenor said. ” I look forward to providing many more benefits to the community through this great civic organization.”

For Marie Froelich who portrays Grandmother Hood, the March 23 performance marks nearly two decades of being in the Soroptimist spotlight.

“This is my 17th year acting in the melodrama and I embrace the challenge every year to step out of my comfort zone and get silly on stage,” she said.  “I’m not looking for a new career, but I do enjoy interacting with the audience as well as getting to know more about my fellow club members.”

Somewhat of a departure from the local club’s annual melodrama productions, the play, nevertheless, will be an interactive experience for the audience. In fact, audience members will have a hand in determining the Big Bad Wolf’s fate.

Proceeds from the fundraising event will go to benefit educational scholarships for women, as well as local organizations and charities which benefit women and girls.

Tickets for the evening’s entertainment are $15 each and are available in advance at: Hays Welcome Center, 27th and Vine, Cerv’s Conoco & Convenience, 27th and Vine, Cerv’s West, 2722 Hall St., or by calling Marie Froelich at (785) 624-5140.

Bomb Threats, Two WalMart Stores Evacuated

It’s back to work for Walmart employees in Great Bend. A bomb threat prompted authorities to evacuate the store Saturday afternoon. There was a similar threat called in to the Walmart in Salina. That store was also evacuated. Brittany Mayhugh who works for Walmart in Great Bend told Hays Post, “Yes, we’re all alive. It was exciting and scary. We are all back to work now and it’s busy.”

Law enforcement authorities have not found anything suspicious at either location but continue to investigate. Two Walmart stores near Colorado Springs also received bomb threats this weekend. The Walmart store in Hays was not a part of the bomb threat.

Walking for Kansas Schools

THays Lincoln Elementary SchoolOPEKA, Kansas (AP) — A member of a group that advocates for Kansas schools is walking 60 miles to Topeka to talk to lawmakers about improved funding.

Thirty-five-year-old Heather Ousley of Merriam began walking Saturday morning and plans to arrive in Topeka on Monday night. Teacher’s union members have invited her to attend several legislative sessions Tuesday.

The mother of three is a member of Game on For Kansas Schools. She’s angered by several legislative proposals, including one to amend the Kansas Constitution to give the Legislature sole authority to determine funding for public schools, thereby cutting out the courts.

The proposal comes after a Shawnee County District Court ruled in January that the state’s school finance system was unconstitutional and ordered legislators to boost spending. Proposal backers say the court overstepped its boundaries.
