17 Things a 5-Year-Old(!) Should Know About Money

piggy banks 3 shotpiggy bank winner 1Even a preschooler can be taught about the value of money, and at age 5, a child should understand at least 17 ways to save money.  That’s according to “America Saves”, a national non-profit campaign encouraging individuals and families to save money and build personal wealth.

And what better way to get youngsters interested than a Piggy Bank Decorating Contest, along with a story time breakfast, featuring “silver dollar” pancakes.

The Ellis County Extension office and Hays Public Library’s Children’s Department recently partnered to make the learning fun.

“It’s basic concepts that can help kids learn about money, “says FACS Extension Agent Linda Beech.  “Show them coins.  They may not remember the value, but they can see that each coin is different.”

Beech and Youth Services Librarian Brandon Hines helped demonstrate the spending of $1 using 100 pennies while HPL’s “Queen of Fun” Miss Vanessa read the book, “Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday, ” by Judith Vorist.

“You can illustrate that what appears to be a lot of money actually goes away once it is spent,” says Beech.

Winners of the piggy bank decorating contest were given rolls of coins to put in their banks from area financial institutions.

Senator Roberts: Releasing Illegals a Political Stunt

U.S. Senator Pat Roberts has Senator Pat Robertsjoined Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and others in introducing an amendment to require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to report to Congress regarding the recent release of illegal immigrants from detention facilities prior to the sequester taking effect and whether this action posed a threat to public safety.

“Releasing illegal immigrants in preparation for cuts in spending is a political stunt,” Senator Roberts said. “The funding and personnel were available at the time to continue to house these detainees and this decision to ignore the rule of law, under the guise of pending spending cuts, is disturbing.”

In February, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released hundreds of illegal immigrants from detention centers and intends to release more before March 31. ICE said the decision to release the immigrant detainees was in preparation for the cuts caused by sequestration.

The amendment to the Continuing Resolution requires DHS to report to the Appropriations and Judiciary Committees about their plan to maintain the 34,000 beds housing detainees.  It also requires ICE to provide information on the aliens released, the conviction or charge for which they were detained, their status, whether they had an existing order of deportation, and the terms of release.

khaz darius rucker 20130315Darius Rucker is set to release his third country album, True Believers, on May 21 featuring the hit single, “Wagon Wheel.” Darius, who had a hand in writing 10 of the album’s 12’s tracks, says he hopes fans follow along as he evolves artistically.

“This record, we wanted to sound a little different, but we knew that it was time that the songs were there,” Darius tells ABC News Radio. “Undeniable songs is what we needed. And we worked hard and wrote a bunch of songs again.”

I just felt more comfortable making it.”

Darius enlisted his friends Lady Antebellum to sing backup on “Wagon Wheel.” He’ll kick off his True Believers Tour May 9 in Estero, FL.

KHAZ Country Music News: Country Singer Jack Greene Dies

khaz jack greene 20130315Country singer Jack Greene, who recorded such ’60s favorites as There Goes My Everything and Statue of a Fool and was the Country Music Association’s first male vocalist of the year, died Thursday.

The 83-year-old entertainer, nicknamed the Jolly Green Giant, was born in Maryville, Tenn., near the Smoky Mountains. Greene got his first guitar at age 10 and began playing on a local radio station WGAP-AM as a teen. He soon made his way to Atlanta, singing and playing guitar, string bass or drums in groups called the Cherokee Trio, the Rhythm Ranch Boys and the Peach Tree Cowboys.

In 1962, Greene joined honky-tonk great Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours as a drummer and relief singer. He had an important additional qualification: He’d learned about diesel motors during a two-year Army stint and could repair the band’s tour bus. Tubb liked to introduce Greene as his “big-eared singing drummer,” and one of his recordings singing for the band, The Last Letter, drew so much attention that Decca Records Nashville head Owen Bradley offered Greene a record deal as a solo artist.

Bradley produced records for most of Decca’s country roster at that time, including classic hits for Tubb, Webb Pierce, Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee. He gave Greene the countrypolitan treatment, with gentle honky-tonk and waltz rhythms, sumptuous background choruses and dramatic melodies reminiscent of the pop records Roy Orbison had been making across town for Monument Records.

When Greene’s second charting single, There Goes My Everything, topped the country charts for two months in 1967, the singer left Tubb’s band with the promise that he could always return to his spot behind the drums if things didn’t work out.

He needn’t have worried. He took three trophies at the inaugural CMA Awards in 1967: male vocalist, single and album of the year. He participated in that year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, singing There Goes My Everything on national television. That December, he joined the Grand Ole Opry cast.

Greene scored five No. 1 country hits in just three years. He also recorded a string of duets with fellow Opry member Jeannie Seely, including the 1969 single Wish I Didn’t Have to Miss You, which reached No. 2.

He was a regular Opry presence for more than 40 years before retiring in 2011. When fellow East Tennessee native Kenny Chesney played the radio show for the first time in 1996, Greene accidentally introduced him as “Larry Chesney.” But even as he began suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, he kept his voice, thrilling audiences with the expressive melodies of his two signature hits. He played the Opry for the final time on Dec. 16, 2011, performing There Goes My Everything, the song that had launched his career.

Cost to Fill Up Fuels Modest Consumer Price Increase

Money 001A spike in gas prices drove a measure of U.S. consumer costs up in February by the most in more than three years. But outside the gain in fuel, inflation was mostly modest.

The Labor Department says consumer prices increased a seasonally adjusted 0.7 percent last month from January, the biggest rise since June 2009. Still, three-fourths of the increase reflected a 9.1 percent surge in gas prices. Gas prices had fallen for the previous four months. Food prices increased just 0.1 percent.

For the 12 months that ended in February, prices increased 2.0 percent. That’s in line with the Federal Reserve’s inflation target.

Excluding volatile food and energy costs, core inflation rose just 0.2 percent in February. Over the past 12 months, core prices have risen just 2 pe
