KHAZ Country Music News: Kenny Chesney Welcomes Willie Nelson and the Wailers Band on “Life on a Rock”

khaz kenny chesney 20120711Kenny Chesney has recruited Willie Nelson and reggae icons the Wailers Band to perform on his new album, Life on a Rock.  Willie lends his voice to the lighthearted song “Coconut Tree,” and the collaboration was a sweet reunion for Kenny.

He says of Willie, “He sang on ‘Lucky Old Sun’ with me, and Buddy Cannon and I got to produce his Moment of Forever, which is one of the things I’m proudest of in my career… and I wanted to do something different with him this time.”

As for the Wailers Band, Kenny welcomed them on the inspirational track “Spread the Love,” but this isn’t the first time the two acts have worked together.

Kenny explains, “They came and played the CMA Awards with me one year, but we never went into the studio! And I really wanted to have that experience with Family Man and those guys, to go to Jamaica and make music.”

Life on a Rock lands in stores April 30 featuring those songs as well as Kenny’s latest hit, “Pirate Flag.”

Kansas Indoor Gardeners Claim Pot Search Illegal

vegetables
AP – Two former CIA employees whose suburban Kansas City home was unsuccessfully searched for marijuana claim they were illegally targeted, possibly because they had purchased indoor growing supplies to raise vegetables.

Adelyn and Robert Harte sued Thursday to obtain records and are considering a federal civil rights lawsuit.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office searched the Harte’s Leawood, Kan., home April 20. That’s the day marijuana users have long designated to celebrate the drug. It’s also a popular day for drug raids.

Attorney Cheryl Pilate says no drugs were found and she wants to know why the home was searched. She suspects it’s because the couple was growing tomatoes and squash in their basement.

County and city officials declined to comment.

KHAZ Country Music News: Darius Rucker Introduces “Wagon Wheel” to His Concert Audiences

khaz darius rucker 20121205Darius Rucker is climbing the country charts fast with his latest single, “Wagon Wheel,” a cover of the Old Crow Medicine show song that has become a honky tonk and frat house anthem in the past few years.  Darius’s version is selling about 75,000 downloads a week, and he’s getting an awesome reaction to the song in concert.

Darius tells ABC News Radio, “It’s really great to watch the people who are fresh out of college who know it just really freak out and have a great time and try to rush to the stage as fast as they can pushing through people.”

As popular as “Wagon Wheel” has become, Darius’s version is introducing it to a lot of people for the first time.

“The people that don’t know it just realize it’s such a great country tune,” Darius says of his concert crowds. “It’s so pure and so real.  It’s awesome to watch people, by the end of it, everybody’s singing it.  It’s that catchy.  It’s that kind of tune.”

Though he’s happy to hear “Wagon Wheel” on country radio, Darius loves just about everything else getting played these days as well.

He says, “I listen to so much country radio, and it’s so rare that I turn the channel ’cause there’s so much good stuff coming on.”

Darius is a big fan of Hunter Hayes‘ music, and Lady Antebellum‘s latest hit struck a big chord with him too.

Darius says of “Downtown,” ” I can’t get enough of it.  You know, I don’t buy things on iTunes, and after about the fifth time of hearing that, I said, ‘I gotta buy that song!'”

Darius Rucker’s fans will be picking up copies of his third country album, True Believers, when it lands in stores May 21.

Kansas Jobless Rate Steady In February

kansas
AP – New unemployment figures show the Kansas jobless rate held steady last month at 5.5 percent, the same as in January but lower than in February 2012.

The Kansas Department of Labor released the new statistics for February late Thursday.

The agency says Kansas added 2,000 private sector jobs in February, continuing a string of four months of growth. Since October the state has added more than 12,000 private sector jobs. Seven of 10 private sector industries showed growth, led by professional and business services.

One positive sign noted by the agency was that building permit data was increasing, suggesting that construction activity will pick up as the spring weather conditions improve.

The 5.5 percent unemployment rate compares to 5.9 percent a year ago.

Moran: Negotiating with Dictators is a Bad Idea

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Jerry Moran, the author of S. Con. Res. 7 – the bipartisan resolution which makes clear a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) that undermines Constitutional freedoms of American gun owners will not be ratified by the Senate – released the following statements today on Iran, North Korea and Syria blocking the U.N. ATT last night.

moran“I have said all along that negotiating the ATT with dictatorships was a bad idea. Last night, Iran, Syria, and North Korea made clear they have no intention of abiding by any such treaty. Therefore, any ATT would only serve to constrain law-abiding democracies like the U.S.,” Sen. Moran said. “The most recent collapse of ATT negotiations should serve as a wake-up call to the world’s democracies of the inherent flaws in the U.N. treaty process that puts us on level ground with dictatorships who abuse human rights and arms terrorists.”

“In the coming weeks, I anticipate ATT supporters will seek new avenues for treaty adoption, such as the U.N. General Assembly,” Sen. Moran continued. “Given the apparent support of the Obama Administration for the ATT, members of the U.S. Senate must continue to make clear that any treaty that violates our Second Amendment freedoms will be an absolute nonstarter for ratification.”

S. Con. Res. 7 is co-sponsored by a bipartisan group of 34 Senators and outlines specific criteria that must be met for a U.N. ATT to be ratified by the U.S. Senate and recognized as customary international law. The companion resolution was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA).Last July, the U.N. Conference on the ATT dissolved without a consensus treaty text. This was in part thanks to the U.S. delegation asking for additional time after receiving a letter from Sen. Moran and 50 of his Senate colleagues expressing intent to oppose ratification of any treaty that infringes upon our Second Amendment freedoms. On November 7, 2012, the day after President Obama’s reelection, his administration announced its intent to reengage in treaty negotiations which will begin Monday.

“The NRA is the voice of over 4.5 million members and represents tens of millions of other gun owners who are concerned about preserving their Second Amendment rights. We have always been clear that any treaty which does not expressly exclude civilian firearms ownership from its scope will be met with the NRA’s greatest force of opposition,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director for the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “We thank Senator Moran for his leadership, and look forward to working with him and his colleagues to defend the fundamental Second Amendment freedoms of all Americans.”

kdheTOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) today published a preliminary report titled Abortions in Kansas, 2012, Preliminary Report. The report reveals there were 7,457 abortions reported in 2012, which is 428 fewer than what was reported in 2011.

Out-of-state residents slightly outnumbered in-state residents, 3,796 reports to 3,661. Of the 3,796 out-of-state residents who obtained abortions in Kansas, 3,714 (97.8%) were residents of Missouri.

State law requires that physicians, hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers report abortions to KDHE. The Women’s Right-to-Know Act requires physicians who perform abortions to provide certain information, certify to KDHE the number of informed-consents obtained from patients. There were 7,600 informed-consent certifications reported by physicians in 2012. That amount is 143 more than the number of procedures performed.

This report is a preliminary analysis of these data as collected by the KDHE Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics.
