School Boards Search for Candidates; Local Forum Set

vote-342x2861Kansas school boards are having trouble finding people to serve.

The Kansas Association of School Boards says in the last 12 years, school districts across the state have consistently had 50 to 70 seats empty.

Doug Moeckel, an executive with the association, says school boards often have to make difficult budget and personnel decisions, which can cause conflict for board members.

He says many people want to serve but are frustrated when they realize the school districts don’t have the resources to provide all the services needed.

When no one is available to fill a school board seat, voters can either write in a candidate or the board can appoint someone.

Candidates for the USD 489 Board of Education will participate in a forum on March 25th at Cody Commons inside the Fort Hays State Union. The forum, which will also include Hays City Commission candidates, will begin at 6:30.

Election Date Set for County Sales Tax

vote-buttonThe date has been established for the special election for Ellis County’s half-cent sales tax ballot question.

The election will be held May 14th, and County Administrator Greg Sund says if the voters approve the tax, it will sunset when all of the costs associated with financing the project have been paid. A specific sunset date will not be set because of uncertainty about how much revenue the sales tax will bring in each year, but the sales tax will sunset when the $14.5 million in bonds are paid off.

The ballot question states that the sales tax would be collected for “the purpose of financing the costs to acquire, construct, remodel and equip improvements to the County Courthouse and Law Enforcement Center and a new EMS/Rural Fire Building.”

Sund and commissioners will visit with the city councils in Victoria and Ellis Monday, asking them to relinquish their share of the sales tax to the county. Hays already has agreed to do so.

Hays Liquor Store Owner on Proposed Liquor Sale Compromise

Grocery and Convenience stores are battling to have the opportunity to sell full strength beer, wine and liquor. Now leaders of the effort have confirmed to Hays Post that they want to take hard liquor out of the proposal.

Hays Liquor storeowner Jim Steinertliquorstore2 told Hays Post, “I figured we were going to hear that but I see the same problems as with the other proposal. I have no problem with full strength beer but I don’t want to give them wine sales. My compromise would have been to give them full strength beer and not let them come back to change the law for 20 years.”

The organization known as Uncork Kansas says they made the decision to take hard liquor from the proposal after a recent survey indicated much stronger support for changing the laws on beer and wine but not hard liquor.

A House committee will vote on the measure this week.

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Laying the Groundwork for 2014 Headlining Tour

khaz band perry 20120301The Band Perry has been on the road opening for Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts lately, but they’re laying the groundwork to step out for a headlining tour of their own in 2014. That may seem a ways off, but it takes awhile to get all the ducks in a row to launch a tour this big.

The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry tells ABC News Radio, “We’ve already started doing stage sketches. It’s amazing how much planning you have to do. You know what I mean? The calendar’s already getting full.”

That headlining show will include a lot of songs from The Band Perry’s sophomore album, Pioneer, due out April 2. The lead single from that project, the #1 hit “Better Dig Two,” has already become the high point of the sibling trio’s live shows.

Says Kimberly, “We are closing our set right now with ‘Better Dig Two,’ which is kind of a bold move for us. Usually we’ve closed with ‘You Lie,’ which was a hit for us a while back.”

The fans in the crowd are creating their own choreography to “Better Dig Two” as well.

“They stomp their feet and they throw up, like, the peace sign. The number two,” Kimberly says. “It’s kind of like this cool moment that we share with the crowd.”

The Band Perry is now climbing up the country charts with the new single from Pioneer. It’s called “DONE.”
