khaz darius rucker duck dynasty 20130308Darius Rucker enlisted some famous friends to appear in his new video for “Wagon Wheel.”  He’s shooting the clip this week in Nashville with a little help from Jase, Korie, Sadie, Si and Willie Robertson from A&E’s Duck DynastyLady Antebellum sings backup on Darius’s version of “Wagon Wheel,” and the group’s Charles Kelley appears in the video too.

So, how did the Duck Dynasty cast end up in Darius’s video?  It turns out it was his wife Beth‘s idea, and she’s the one who ultimately made it happen.

“I thought we had no chance because they’re so busy, so I never even said it out loud,” Darius says.  “Thank God she called my manager because the DD folks took this video to a whole new level!  Big thanks to them and Charles… It was a good time for sure, and I can’t wait to see how the video turns out!”

“Wagon Wheel” was written by Ketch Secur of Old Crow Medicine Show based on a song sketch by Bob Dylan.  Darius’s version will appear on his new album, True Believers, due out this spring.

Use GPS, Get a Warrant

CellphoneA bill before a Kansas Senate committee would require police to obtain a warrant before attaching a GPS to a suspect’s vehicle.

The House already passed the bill, which complies with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Kyle Smith, deputy director the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, testified Thursday that Kansas law needs to be updated because it currently doesn’t address GPS search warrants.

The Wichita Eagle reports an amendment to the bill would require customers to provide identification information to retailers when buying prepaid cellphones or SIM cards. Police could get that information from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation if they find such devices while investigating a crime.

The sponsor says it’s aimed at drug dealers, who often use prepaid phones because they are nearly impossible to trace.

Roberts Launches Regulation Review

Today, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts announced the launch of the Roberts Regulation Review on his official website. This page will serve as a regulation clearinghouse to inform and allow Kansans to weigh in on proposed regulations. Senator Roberts will post summaries of new regulations, as well as links to the full text, and link visitors to the correct page of Regulations.Gov to submit comments directly to the appropriate department.

https://www.roberts.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=regulation-review

The first regulation review featured on the new site is the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s newly proposed snack rule. The USDA has opened a required 60 day comment period on new school snacks or “competitive foods” proposed rules. The rules and instructions to make a comment can be found at Robert’s web site.Pat Roberts Regulation Review

Last year there was significant backlash to the implementation of similar USDA rules for the School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

To avoid similar controversy and to ensure Kansans’ voices are heard before the new set of regulations go into effect, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today released a public service announcement calling on interested Kansans to utilize the 60 day comment period for the new USDA proposed rules for school snacks and beverages.  These new rules will determine what is available to students in vending machines and in a la carte offerings of school meals.

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Laying the Groundwork for 2014 Headlining Tour

khaz band perry 20120301The Band Perry has been on the road opening for Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts lately, but they’re laying the groundwork to step out for a headlining tour of their own in 2014. That may seem a ways off, but it takes awhile to get all the ducks in a row to launch a tour this big.

The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry tells ABC News Radio, “We’ve already started doing stage sketches. It’s amazing how much planning you have to do. You know what I mean? The calendar’s already getting full.”

That headlining show will include a lot of songs from The Band Perry’s sophomore album, Pioneer, due out April 2. The lead single from that project, the #1 hit “Better Dig Two,” has already become the high point of the sibling trio’s live shows.

Says Kimberly, “We are closing our set right now with ‘Better Dig Two,’ which is kind of a bold move for us. Usually we’ve closed with ‘You Lie,’ which was a hit for us a while back.”

The fans in the crowd are creating their own choreography to “Better Dig Two” as well.

“They stomp their feet and they throw up, like, the peace sign. The number two,” Kimberly says. “It’s kind of like this cool moment that we share with the crowd.”

The Band Perry is now climbing up the country charts with the new single from Pioneer. It’s called “DONE.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Claude King Dead: Country Singer Dies At Age 90

Photo of Claude KingNEW ORLEANS — Country singer-songwriter Claude King, an original member of the Louisiana Hayride who was best known for the 1962 hit “Wolverton Mountain,” has died. He was 90.

King had just celebrated his birthday and 67th wedding anniversary to his wife, Barbara, last month. The couple’s eldest son, Duane King, said his father was found unresponsive in his bed early Thursday morning at his home in Shreveport.

King was one of the original members of the Louisiana Hayride, the Saturday-night show where Elvis Presley also got his start. The show transformed country and western music from 1948 to 1960 with music genres including hillbilly, Western swing, jazz, blues and gospel.

King’s hit “Wolverton Mountain” told a story of mountain man Clifton Clowers, who guarded his daughter from suitors.

“Claude was a legend in the Louisiana music industry, one of the greatest songwriters, and a wonderful friend,” said Maggie Warwick, owner of the Louisiana Hayride trademark and the production company, Louisiana Hayride Co. “Claude and Tillman Franks were on the Hayride from the very beginning.”

Warwick, who also serves as chairwoman of the Louisiana Music Commission, said King was known for his guitar-playing skills and knack for writing songs.

“He had a gift for melody and lyrics that was very definable,” Warwick said. “The range and melody and the feeling that goes with his songs, when you hear it, it’s very unique and identifiable with Claude King. He had a personal style that was all his own.”

Bid to Withdraw Plea in Child’s Death

Antonio Brown Jail escapeeA Salina man who briefly escaped from jail says he wants to withdraw his no contest plea in the death of his girlfriend’s son.

Twenty-nine-year-old Antonio M. Brown Sr. was to be sentenced Thursday for the death of 14-month-old Clayden Lee Urbanek in October 2011. The original sentencing for first-degree murder and child abuse was delayed after Brown escaped from the Saline County jail in February. He turned himself in two days later in Wichita.

Brown’s attorney said his client wanted to withdraw his plea. His attorneys had already filed a motion seeking to withdraw as Brown’s counsel.

The toddler’s mother, Brittney N. Betzold, is serving 13 years and one month for second-degree murder and one count of child abuse in her son’s death.

City Considers Lawn Watering Permit Changes

Water Restriction 001The City of Hays is proposing changes to the newly seeded lawn permit process to encourage homeowners to use water more efficiently.

Currently when the summer water restrictions are in place from June 1st to September 30th, residents who plant new lawns can get permits to water during the restricted time. City Manager Toby Dougherty says the change would restrict when permits would be issued for certain types of grasses.

Newly planted lawns with cool season grasses could receive watering permits from August 25th to September 30.

Permits for warm season grasses such as buffalo and Bermuda would be issued from June 1st to August 1st. Watering would still be permitted before noon and after 7 p.m. The commission will consider the changes next week.

Lawmakers Looked at Strip Clubs Today

Kansas House committee today Strip Club rejected a bill imposing new regulations on strip clubs, adult bookstores and other sexually oriented businesses.

The Federal and State Affairs Committee first watered down the measure to remove provisions that would have banned alcohol and total nudity within such businesses.

Members also removed a ban on seminude employees intentionally touching patrons and a requirement that dancers remain 6 feet away from customers.

The revised bill still would have barred such businesses within 1,000 feet of schools, homes and houses of worship.

But some social conservatives who backed the original bill wouldn’t vote for the weaker version, and the committee rejected it on a voice vote. The action is likely to end debate on the issue for the year.
