KHAZ Country Music News: Kimberly Schlapman Launches Season Two of “Kimberly’s Simply Southern” on Saturday

khaz kimberly schlapman 20121217Little Big Town‘s Kimberly Schlapman kicks off the second season of her GAC cooking show, Kimberly’s Simply Southern, this Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern.  She’s lined up an impressive list of stars to join her behind the counter this season including Josh Turner, Jerrod Niemann, Dustin Lynch, Martina McBride, Craig Morgan and Sunny Sweeney as well as her LBT band mate Karen Fairchild.  Playing host to her famous friends is a big perk of hosting the show for Kimberly.

“I like having people in the kitchen with me, and I like talking to them about what they’re doing,” Kimberly tells ABC News Radio.  “I like talking about how they grew up and how they grew up with food, and did they grow up cooking and did they grow up watching their grandmother cook?  I love the stories that we find out.”

Kimberly has to actually memorize each recipe and cook it all while she’s paying attention to the camera and making her guests feel welcome.  It’s a lot to juggle, and Kimberly is thankful her producers are in the next room to keep her in line during filming.

She says, “I think I’m getting a little bit better at it, but still, sometimes they yell at me from the other side of the wall, ‘You forgot the cloves!’  You know, stuff like that.”

In addition to cooking in the kitchen, Kimberly also gets out into the wild with a trip into a Florida citrus grove this season. She also harvests oysters in Washington State, handcrafts chocolate in Brooklyn and milks cows in Georgia on upcoming episodes.

Sweeping Anti-Abortion Bill Approved

A Kansas House committee has approved a sweeping anti-abortion bill that prevents groups providing abortion services from being involved in the state’s public schools.Abortion 001

The measure approved Thursday by the Federal and State Affairs Committee also is aimed at ensuring the state doesn’t subsidize abortions even indirectly through tax exemptions or credits.

The committee’s voice vote sends the measure to the entire House for debate.

The bill would prevent abortion providers from distributing information for schools’ sex education courses. It also says no school employee or educational service provider could provide abortion services.

Republican Allan Rothlisberg wanted to go further and ban abortion providers or their employees from even volunteering at public schools, but his fellow committee members didn’t endorse the idea.

Boldra Carries Ed Bill

Rep. Sue Boldra on WednesdayBoldra 2 carried an education bill on the House Floor.

A member of the House Education Committee, Rep. Boldra carried House Bill 2319 during Thursday’s General Orders. To “carry” a bill means the legislator from the committee of origination explains the bill to the entire body, then stands for questions from members.

“Representative Boldra did a fantastic job carrying the bill today,” said House Speaker Ray Merrick (R-Stilwell). “The debate was lengthy, but Rep. Boldra answered questions and did a great job representing and explaining the bill.”

House Bill creates the Innovative Districts Act, which would allow 10 school districts in Kansas to form plans to create special curriculum and education systems outside of current laws and regulation. The bill would give the districts a lot of flexibility to operate new programs.

The House gave initial approval to the bill Thursday on a voice vote. Representative Boldra is currently serving her first term in the Kansas House of Representatives. She is a longtime educator and professor.

Hays Firefighters Train for Multistory Building Fires

HFDMembers of the Hays Fire Department are in the second day of training on the top floor of the downtown Emprise Bank building.

Crews are practicing procedures to attack a fire in a multistory building.

Large and tall buildings, such as the six-story bank building,  are equipped with built-in water mains supplying interior “fire hydrants, ” according to Lieutenant Ryan Hagans.

“We hook-up a two-and-a-half inch line outside and an additional attack crew takes 150 foot of hose inside, hooks it up to the inside hydrant and then stretches the hose throughout the building,” he explains.

The firefighters use the fire exit stairs, and have to estimate the reach of the hose and its proper deployment and management on an upper floor.

Business is going on as usual at Emprise Bank and the other building tenants during the drill.  “When we don’t have access to a multistory building,” says Hagans, “we have training props at the station for practices several times a year.”

The third and final training starts at 9a.m. Friday.

Hearing Continued for Great Bend Woman Charged in Honor Flight Theft

HonorFlight_logoGREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) – A Great Bend woman charged with stealing from a group that flew World War II veterans to Washington D.C. had her preliminary hearing continued until April 10.

LaVeta Miller is charged with two counts of theft by deception for allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from the Central Prairie Honor Flights program.

After a day of testimony Wednesday, the preliminary hearing was continued until April because of the attorneys’ scheduling conflicts.
