khaz zac brown 20130305The Road to the Ram Jam all-star country music series continues, with Zac Brown‘s 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn now up for auction.  Zac drove the truck for the past year, and the money raised through its auction at Ebay.com/RoadtoRamJam will benefit his Camp Southern Ground. That facility in Zac’s home state of Georgia will bring together children with diverse abilities and backgrounds, including those with learning disabilities and development disorders, in a state-of-the-art summer camp and research facility.

Zac says, “The proceeds from this truck go to help us make a difference in the lives of many children and their families. Thanks to RAM for all of the charitable donations that they make.”

Zac’s Ram is the third truck to go up for auction as part of the Road to the Ram Jam.  Brantley Gilbert‘s Ram truck was auctioned off recently and raised more than $34,000 for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.  Billy Currington‘s truck raised about the same amount for Team Rubicon, while Kellie Pickler‘s truck brought in more than $36,000 for the USO Warrior and Family Care program in January.  Easton Corbin will offer up his Ram truck for auction soon.

Roberts Rips Obama for Closing White House to Public

Mere weeks after the New York Times reported President Obama may be selling White House access to the Obama campaign’s highest donors, the White House today alerted Congressional offices they would indefinitely cancel all White House tours as a result of the sequestration cuts. Senator Pat RobertsSenator Pat Roberts released the following statement in response:

“This is perception politics run amok. The White House spends tens of thousands of dollars each year on Christmas decorations and elaborate events, but when asked to trim its budget they opt to close the White House gate to the American people.  To the thousands of Americans visiting the nation’s capital this spring break and summer I want to be clear, while the Obama White House may close, the People’s Congress will not. My office will be here, we will be open and we will be honored to give you a tour of your Capitol, free of charge. ”

Below is the text of email sent to Senator Roberts’ office from the White House visitor’s office:

State Seizes and Closes 10 Taco Ticos

taco tico seizedAt 10 a.m. March 5, the state seized the assets of Ajax International Group, which owns Taco Tico,  and closed 10 of the restaurants, reports the Wichita Eagle.

“This is for nonpayment of retail state sales tax,” says Jeannine Koranda, spokeswoman for the state Department of Revenue.  “With that, they seized multiple sites.”

Koranda says there are two warrants against the company.

One, for June through September of 2011, is for $73,315.94. The other, for October 2011 through October 2012, is for $361,623.29.

Neither owner Mohmood Karim nor anyone at corporate headquarters could be reach for comment.

The seizure included six Wichita Taco Ticos, one in Derby, one in Arkansas City, one in Dodge City and one in Topeka.

“This is the last in a long series of steps that are taken,” Koranda says of the state shutting down a business.

“We always work with the businesses in question,” she says. “If they can go onto a payment plan or work out an arrangement, they will be allowed to reopen.”

Down to the Tornado Shelter at Washington School

tornado drill 2Outdoor warning devices, commonly called tornado sirens, were sounded across Kansas at 1:30p.m. today.

The annual statewide tornado drill is part of National Severe Weather Awareness Week which continues through Saturday.

Students at Washington Elementary School practice their tornado drill three times a year, according to principal Allan Park.

“The students and teachers come out of their classrooms or in from the playground, and go down the stairs in two lines to our cafeteria.  It’s in the basement and also serves as the school’s tornado shelter,” Park says.  “Today it took two and half minutes for 166 people-everybody in the building-to get in the shelter, about an average time.”

The tornado siren nearest Washington School is at Fort Hays State University, south of Lewis Field.  Park has a National Weather Service weather radio in his office which also sounds the warning.

An alarm in the hallway outside the second-grade classroom also beeps as students practice their tornado drill.

Sports Complex Sales Tax to Sunset

bickle schmidt sports complexAt the end of the month, the sales tax approved by Hays voters to build the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex will sunset. The sales tax will go from 8.55% back to 8.05% at midnight on March 31st.

The tax was approved in 2008 and is expected to collect $11 million. City Finance Director Kim Rupp says the voters approved $8 million for construction and the additional funds are set aside for continued maintenance.

Retailers need to start charging the 8.05% tax beginning at 12:01 a.m. on April 1st. That tax rate is broken down with 6.30% going to the state and 1.75% to the city.

If Ellis County’s sales tax question is approved by the voters, the rate in Hays would again be 8.55%.
