Brownback Sees Need For Quick OK For NBAF Bonds

nbaf
(AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback says Kansas legislators need to quickly approve $202 million in new bonds for a new, national biosecurity lab because of the federal government’s ongoing budget problems.

Brownback said Friday it’s best to get the financing resolved soon for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility planned at Kansas State University.

President Barack Obama’s proposed budget includes $714 million for the lab. It would study animal diseases and ways to protect the nation’s food supply and replace an aging facility on Plum Island, N.Y.

Kansas already has issued $105 million in bonds, but Obama’s budget requires the additional amount. Some GOP state legislators are wary.

Brownback says he understands concerns about debt but doesn’t want lingering uncertainty about the project’s funding.

Lawmakers return from their spring break May 8.

Kansas To Honor 2 Slain Topeka Police Officers

police memorial

(AP) — Kansas is honoring two Topeka officers who were killed on duty last year by adding their names to the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Statehouse grounds.

The state plans to remember their deaths during its annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on May 3 outside the Statehouse. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for the night before at the memorial, on the northeast part of the grounds.

Topeka police Cpl. David Gogian and Officer Jeffrey Atherly were shot to death in December while checking possible drug activity outside a supermarket. Their killer later was fatally shot by law enforcement officers.

Hutchinson Shelter For Homeless To Open Monday

nb

(AP) — An emergency homeless shelter will open in Hutchinson Monday, thanks to a lot of help from volunteers and donors.

New Beginnings says it will open the NOEL Lodge on Monday afternoon. It will have 25 beds, with men’s and women’s dormitories and three family rooms. An open house for the public will be held Saturday.

The shelter was to open in February but was delayed after inspectors found problems with a firewall, requiring New Beginnings to raise another $25,000.

Four Hutchinson churches contributed thousands of dollars in materials and labor. Other churches and several contractors also offered donations or reduced labor.

Previously, Hutchinson didn’t have an emergency homeless shelter. Instead, New Beginnings distributed hotel vouchers for one night at a time during extreme weather.

KHAZ Country Music News: Miranda Lambert on the Gun Control Debate: I’m Not Going There

khaz miranda lambert 20130426Miranda Lambert is clearly OK with owning and carrying a gun since she has two guns tattooed on her arm, and her breakthrough hit was titled “Gunpowder & Lead.”  That being said, you won’t find Miranda telling anyone else how to think on the hot-button topic of gun control.  Miranda is a big fan of the Dixie Chicks, and she learned that speaking out on politically charged topics can spell big trouble for a singer’s career.

Miranda tells TheBoot.com, “I don’t want to ever use my career or this thing that I’ve built as a platform to sway people to my direction, because, truthfully, I don’t care.  I just want to believe what I believe and be happy, and people can believe what they believe.  I don’t ever want to push my opinion on someone because I don’t want them pushing their opinion on me.”

Miranda has her concealed handgun permit and uses guns for hunting, but she knows firearms aren’t for everyone.

“Some people don’t feel like they need guns and that’s their prerogative,” Miranda says.  “But I do think that we should each have a choice of one or the other.”

It’s no accident that Miranda’s group with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley is called Pistol Annies.  They’re new album, Annie Up, comes out May 7 featuring the lead single, “Hush Hush.”

Senator Moran On House Passage Of FAA Cuts Fix

Senator Moran– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran author of the Protect Our Skies Act, released the following statement today on the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of the Senate-passed bill to provide the Secretary of Transportation with additional flexibility to transfer funds to prevent reduced operations and staffing at the FAA:

“The House has joined the Senate to send a clear bipartisan message to the White House: use the flexibility you have to put safety first and solve this problem. This bill directs the FAA to find savings elsewhere in their budget rather than target air traffic controllers for furloughs and control towers for closure. Through smarter cuts, rather than tax hikes or smoke and mirrors, the bill provides $253 million in additional funding flexibility to the FAA – more than enough to protect both air traffic controllers and the 149 contract control towers slated for closure. This bipartisan solution is about safety – and is a victory for air travelers and communities nationwide.”

Tobacco Settlement Sparks Kansas Debate

smoke-150x150

(AP) – Kansas’ share of tobacco settlement funds has come in higher than expected for the second year in a row, prompting a debate in Topeka over where the extra money should go.

Several tobacco companies agreed in 1998 to reimburse states for smoking-related costs over more than two decades, and Kansas law requires the money to be spent on early childhood programs.

Any money left over is supposed to go into the Kansas Endowment for Youth to help fund the programs when the settlement funds run out.

This year Kansas had budgeted $55.8 million from the settlement, but instead received a check for $60.2 million. Children’s advocates say the extra money should go into the endowment, but lawmakers say it’s needed elsewhere in tight economic times.

KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Wrap Up Their Limited Las Vegas Engagement This Weekend

khaz faith hill tim mcgraw 20130208Tim McGraw and Faith Hill wrap up their limited engagement at The Venetian in Las Vegas this weekend, and Tim calls the 10-weekend run of shows a “dream job.”

He says, “It’s just been so much fun. You know, we had friends come out and family come out. Great shows every night.”

Though their Soul II Soul tours together have been blockbusters at the box office, Tim and Faith don’t get to sing together all that often.

Tim adds he is grateful “to sort of have that sort of special time that we can go out there and sing and put together this show that looked so beautiful and felt so cool in that theater. The Venetian people, I can’t imagine anybody being any nicer to us.”

Tim isn’t taking any time away from the stage though. He’ll fire up his Two Lanes of Freedom tour with Brantley Gilbert and Love and Theft on May 2 in Birmingham, AL.
