Rain a Mixed Blessing for Farmers

corn(AP) – Several days of rain have been a mixed blessing for Kansas farmers and ranchers.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday the past week’s rain halted early corn planting in eastern sections. Corn planting is only 5 percent complete statewide, far behind the late-April average of 20 percent.

But the agency also reports the much-needed moisture is helping replenish farm ponds and soil moisture.

In its weekly update, the agency said supplies of topsoil moisture are running short to very short in about 38 percent of Kansas, down from 40 percent one week ago. It will take longer to replenish subsoil moisture, now rated 68 percent short in Kansas.

The condition of Kansas rangelands and pastures is still rated poor to very poor across 68 percent of the state

Moran Receives Digital Patriot Award (Video)

This week, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) was honored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) as a 2013 recipient of the CEA Digital Patriot Award.

“Senator Moran represents one of America’s new technology hotbeds, ‘the Silicon Prairie,’” said Michael Petricone of the CEA. “And he is a fierce advocate for pro-innovation, pro-technology policies.”

“We’re pursuing polices that create opportunities for the American Dream to be lived in America,” Sen. Moran said upon receiving the award. “Our country is involved in innovation because our country came into existence because of a love, a need, a desire, a respect for freedom and liberty. And in a place where freedom and liberty is respected and honored, we can innovate. And you have every reason to be optimists. Because of what you do, our country has a bright future.”

CEA’s video about Sen. Moran’s leadership features interviews with Kaufmann Foundation Tom McDonnell, Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, and others.

Wild Turkey Blamed for Car Accident

Cattle, deer, even the occasional horse are all known to create road hazards in Kansas. But it was a flying turkey that did in one driver’s windshield.turkey

The Reno County sheriff’s office says a 65-year-old Larned man suffered minor injuries around 9 a.m. Monday when the big bird crashed through the windshield of his SUV.

The turkey landed in the man’s lap, then moved over to the lap of his passenger. KWCH-TV reports the turkey did not survive the crash. The motorist was treated at the scene for minor cuts and glass in his eyes.

The accident happened on U.S. 50 in Partridge, about 12 miles southwest of Hutchinson.

Roberts: USDA Stimulus Spending Needs Proper Oversight

Senator Pat Roberts U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today said a report released by USDA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) found the $45.5 billion in stimulus funds spent to increase monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits have not been evaluated to determine their effectiveness and underscores the need for his bill to restore integrity to the food stamps program.

“The OIG found that the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) cannot determine if stimulus money was doing what it was intended to do, feed hungry families hit hard by the recession,” Roberts said. “As we begin to mark-up a new farm bill, the debate should include reasonable reforms to food stamps and whether this kind of stimulus spending should continue without proper oversight and evaluation.”

The OIG found that methods used by the FNS to assess the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) spending did not adequately evaluate how additional stimulus spending met the goals of assisting those most impacted by the recession, of stabilizing state government nutrition program budgets or stimulating the economy.

Senator Roberts’ bill, S. 458, restores integrity to SNAP and saves the taxpayer $36 billion over ten years while ensuring those in need still receive benefits. Section 10 of the bill ends the temporary increase in monthly SNAP benefits provided by the ARRA. For a bill summary, score and more information on S. 458 go here.

Increased food stamp benefits under the ARRA are set to expire October 31, 2013, but President Obama’s FY 2014 budget calls for the stimulus to continue through March 31, 2014 – an additional $2.2 billion in taxpayer dollars.

Senator Roberts is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Nutrition and Forestry.

Losing weight has always been a challenge for me.  I lose then gain it back in short order and sometimes gain even more back than I lost when I started.  Two years ago I worked a plan and got down to my goal weight and kept it off, but the past 4 months I started gaining back what I lost.  I know what I need to do to get back on track, go back to doing what worked for me before, but I really can’t get started and stick with it.  I don’t have that same motivation.

Geesh, I wish I could find this elusive thing called motivation and bottle it!  I’d be a gazillionaire!  Finding motivation, especially where weight loss is concerned, is tough.  We love to eat; eating tastes good; it feels good.  Often, it soothes over that rough day.  Damn, why can’t they make zero calorie cookies! I think there is something genetically mutated in those people who don’t like to eat and are content to crunch on raw vegetables all day. Don’t you? If they had lived in prehistoric times, they’d have all died out.  Why then, do we have to put up with their skinny bodies as that unattainable target we’re all supposed to strive for?…oh, how I digress…

Take an honest look at your eating habits to determine what small changes you can make to control your eating.  Also, take an honest look at your daily activity and map out a plan for adding more movement in to your day.  Decreasing calories and increasing activity is, and always will be, the gold standard for weight loss.  Start with small steps, and watch them grow to bigger steps and bigger success! Make your plan for weight loss as unique as you are. Here’s to your all-powerful, all-wonderful, uniqueness!

Brownback Approves Stem Cell Center

Law 003 Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has signed legislation creating a new center at the state’s medical school for researching potential cures using adult stem cells.

The bill signed into law Monday by Brownback prohibits the new center at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City from using money or resources on research with embryonic stem cells.

Instead, the aim is to make Kansas a leader in research with adult stem cells and stem cells from babies’ umbilical cord blood.

Abortion opponents strongly supported the bill and see such research as far more promising than research with embryonic stem cells. But Brownback also was flanked by patients as he signed the measure.

Critics question whether the new center will divert resources from other Medical Center programs.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Prefers Riding His Tour Bus to Flying the Friendly Skies

khaz brantley gilbert 20130422Brantley Gilbert is always on the go taking his music to fans across the country, and he prefers to do that traveling on his tour bus as opposed to flying to his shows.

Explaining why he hates flying the friendly skies, Brantley tells GAC, “I hate customs. I hate going through security. I hate layovers. I hate cancelled flights.”

Though Brantley has had a lot of success so far, he isn’t to the point where he can fly privately either.

“I’m kinda on a commercial budget,” Brantley says. “I sit in an economy seat. So I would definitely rather be on my bus. I’ve really gotten comfortable with it. It is a home away from home. I can honestly say I sleep just as good there if not better than at home.”

Brantley will be rolling along all summer opening for Tim McGraw on the Two Lanes of Freedom tour starting next month.
