Death Rate for Babies Down. Kansas Has Significant Drop

The Center for Disease Control reported this week that following a plateau from 2000 through 2005, the U.S. infant mortality rate declined 12% from 2005 through 2011. Declines for neonatal and postneonatal mortality were similar. Kansas saw the biggest drop with 15.6% btw 2005-2011

From 2005 through 2011, infant mortality declined 16% for non-Hispanic black women and 12% for non-Hispanic white women.
Infant mortality declined for four of the five leading causes of death during the 2005–2011 period.
Infant mortality rates declined most rapidly among some, but not all, Southern states from 2005 through 2010. Despite these declines, states in the South still had among the highest rates in 2010. Rates were also high in 2010 in some states in the Midwest.
Infant mortality is an important indicator of the health of a nation (1,2). This report describes the recent decline in the U.S. infant mortality rate from 2005 through 2011. Changes in infant mortality rates over time are examined by age at death, maternal race and ethnicity, cause of death, and state. The linked birth/infant death data set (linked file) is generally the preferred source for infant mortality rates by race and ethnicity (3,4). This is particularly important for racial and ethnic groups other than non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and Hispanic. For these three groups, rates calculated from the mortality and linked files have been very similar for many years, and trends are unlikely to differ (3–5). Thus, data from the mortality file are used for this analysis because of their greater timeliness (3,6). Data for 2011 are preliminary (6). Because preliminary data are not available by state, data for the 2005–2010 period were used for the geographic analysis.

Union Pacific will Strengthen Western Kansas Rail Line

Union PacificUnion Pacific Railroad will strengthen Kansas’ transportation infrastructure by investing $19 million in the rail line between Salina and near Oakley. The project, funded entirely by Union Pacific without taxpayer dollars, began April 11 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.

The railroad will replace 133,700 railroad ties, install more than 63,700 tons of rock ballast and replace more than one-quarter mile of rail in various curves. In addition, crews will renew the surfaces at 174 road crossings. The project is one of nearly 1,500 Union Pacific will complete across its 32,000-mile network this year to help improve train operating efficiency, reduce motorist wait times at crossings and enhance safety.

“Union Pacific helps link businesses with consumers, suppliers and markets across the nation and around the world,” said Donna Kush, Union Pacific vice president – Public Affairs, Northern Region. “In addition to helping move customers’ goods more safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and, promoting economic expansion.”

Improved and additional freight rail capacity helps reduce highway congestion and contributes to a cleaner environment. One Union Pacific train can take up to 300 trucks off America’s roads, and Union Pacific can move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel.

Sibshop Event

The FHSU Teacher Education Program will be sponsoring a Sibshop event on May 4th, from 10:00 to 12:30 PM at the Strenberg Museum of Natural History, Expeditions Room.  There is no cost to participants for the event.

Sibshops is a nationally acclaimed program that provides peer support within a recreational environment.  It’s designed to celebrate the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs.
Each Sibshop encourages kids to participate in site based activities that encourage sharing, laughter and fun!  Kids will have a chance to meet other kids whose brothers and sisters have special needs and talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sibling with a disability or a medical condition.
Sibshops are for siblings of kids with developmental, health or mental health concerns or serious illnesses.  The Hays Sibshop is open to kids around 6 to 8 years of age.
The Hays Sibshop is sponsored by the Fort Hays State University Teacher Education Program.  The program is made possible with a United Way of Ellis County Community Impact Grant.
Online registration is required and available at:  https://haysparents.com/sibshops/

Help Build the World’s Largest Baseball

Muscotah ballThe Kansas Sampler Foundation plans a work weekend in Muscotah  May 17-19 to build a rural baseball museum within the World’s Largest Baseball.

Muscotah, a town of 200 in western Atchison County, is the birthplace of Baseball Hall of Famer, Joe Tinker.

It made sense to Jeff Hanson, 70, to capitalize on the town’s connection to Tinker by building an unusual baseball museum out of a 20-foot in diameter water tower tank. A mini-infield with an old-fashioned outfield fence and iron cut-outs of Tinker and his famous double-play teammates, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance, will be located behind the ball. A mural of Tinker to Evers to Chance will be painted on the concrete concession stand.

Muscotah joe tinkerHanson said, “Maybe we can even help “reverse the curse” for the Chicago Cubs by drawing attention to Joe Tinker.”  The Cubs haven’t won the World Series since 1908 when Tinker was the shortstop.

With help from local people and support of area businesses, Hanson has placed red rebar on the round tank to provide the look of baseball seams.

Marci Penner, director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, said, “Sometime volunteer-led towns need some outside support with ambitious projects. We’re asking for baseball fans, or anyone connected to Kansas or concerned about rural America to respond with donations or to volunteer. We have a form that outlines all that is needed.”

Bob Topping, Lawrence, is the project coordinator and has listed each task and all materials needed on the sign-up form at kansassampler.org.

KDHE: Kansas Denim Day is Wednesday

KDHE, Partners Working to Prevent Sexual Violence

kdheThe Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) invites state agencies and other Kansas employers to join the state health department in supporting Denim Day by allowing employees to wear jeans on Wednesday, April 24. Denim Day is a response to a 1999 Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has been a symbol of support for victims of sexual violence and protest against the idea that a victim could cause their own rape.

“Sexual violence is a public health issue that impacts every Kansas community,” said Robert Moser, M.D., KDHE Secretary and State Health Officer. “Kansas women who experienced unwanted sex were more likely to have diagnosed depression, diagnosed anxiety, self-rated fair/poor health and thought about taking their lives in the past year.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have been raped in their lifetime. In Kansas, nearly 1 in 10 women 18 years and older had experienced unwanted sex in their lifetime. The Kansas-specific data are from the 2011 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System administered by KDHE.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a proclamation recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Governor’s proclamation affirms that, “with leadership, dedication and encouragement, there is evidence that we can be successful in preventing sexual violence in Kansas through increased education, awareness and community involvement.”

“If you have been a victim of sexual assault, there is help,” said Moser. “To find sexual and domestic violence help in your area, visit www.kcsdv.org or call the Kansas Crisis Hotline at 1-888-363-2287.”

Kansans Can Help Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers

As Kansans take advantage of the warming weather to get out to their favorite lake or river, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) fishreminds outdoor enthusiasts that they play a critical role in helping stop aquatic invaders that threaten Kansas waters.  An informed, watchful public can help protect Kansas waters, so KDWPT has a place on its website where people can learn about the threat and what they can do to help – Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers at ProtectKSWaters.org.

Zebra mussels, Asian carp and other aquatic nuisance species (ANS) pose serious environmental and economic threats to the state’s aquatic resources. Aquatic nuisance species are animals and plants not native to Kansas that can threaten lake and river ecology, harm native or desirable species, and interfere with our economy. They often hitchhike with unsuspecting people who may unknowingly transport an ANS to a previously uninfested body of water.

“Some people may not realize that these non-native species may affect them even if they don’t fish or boat,” said Jessica Howell, Kansas Aquatic Nuisance Species Program Coordinator. “Zebra mussels will attach themselves to anything below the water line. In addition to damaging boating and fishing equipment, they’ll foul rocky shorelines with their sharp, dime-sized shells, making it hard to walk or wade along the shore. Also, they can clog water intakes and damage power-generating facilities. In early 2012, the city of Council Grove experienced a temporary water shortage due to a thick layer of zebra mussels coating the inside of the intake tank at Council Grove City Lake.”

Asian carp are another aquatic nuisance species – actually three species of carp – that threaten waterways and fish populations. They can eat up to 40 percent of their body weight each day, competing with native fish for food and threatening the diversity and quality of other aquatic life.  When young, Asian carp resemble native minnows and shad, which is one reason the Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission adjusted the bait fish regulations to limit the use of wild-caught bait fish.  When grown, Asian carp can weigh up to 100 pounds, and they are prone to leaping out of the water when disturbed, posing a real physical threat to boaters.

There are three primary ways the public can help stop ANS from spreading:

CLEAN – DRAIN – DRY  boats and equipment after every visit to any lake or river

DON’T MOVE LIVE FISH  between bodies of water or up streams

DON’T DUMP BAIT IN THE WATER OR DRAINAGE DITCHES – Instead, discard it on dry land or in an approved receptacle

Tiger Loose at Circus Saturday Evening

circus-150x150-Social media was abuzz Saturday evening in Salina as those who attended the Isis Shrine Circus at the Bi-Centennial Center spread the word on Facebook and Twitter about a few moments that a tiger got loose during a performance.

No one was hurt and the tiger was captured by circus staff in a restroom.

One Salina man on Facebook said the trainer and circus staff backed a cage up to the restroom door, snapped a whip , and the tiger went into the cage .

Bicentennial manager Chris Bird told the Associate Press, ” most people, other than those who couldn’t get into the restroom, had no idea a dangerous animal had briefly escaped.”

The circus had one more performance Sunday afternoon.

Tiger Baseball Splits With Truman

FHSU-BSB-JohnsonFort Hays State split a MIAA doubleheader with Truman on Saturday at Larks Park. The Tigers dropped game one 8-7, but bounced back for a 15-5 run-rule win in game two. Fort Hays State moved to 22-18 overall and 18-17 in the MIAA. FHSU moved up into eighth place in the MIAA standings with the split, a half game ahead of Southwest Baptist.

Game 1: Truman 8, Fort Hays State 7
Fort Hays State tied the seven-inning contest twice, but could not cash in on golden opportunities throughout the game to overtake Truman. After Truman took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, FHSU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. Truman picked up one in the third and one in the fourth, before FHSU pushed single runs across in the fourth and fifth to get the game tied once again.

Truman delivered the big blow in the sixth with four runs, but the Tigers responded with three in the bottom half of the inning taking advantage of two errors by the Bulldogs. However, the Tigers could not push the tying or go ahead runs across with the bases loaded when Jay Sanders grounded into an inning-ending double play. Sanders was 3-for-3 in the game up to that point.

The Tigers got a runner to second in the seventh inning with one out, but had a flyout and a strikeout to end the game.

Tayler Davis took the loss on the mound, moving to 6-3, allowing all eight runs on 11 hits and three walks with one strikeout in 5.2 innings of work. Kyle Leroy pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Kelton Rule had a team-high two RBI in the game for FHSU, one on a groundout and the other on a single. Sam Thornton, Ryan Busboom,m Nathan Miller and Jay Sanders all had an RBI. Horace Johnson went 3-for-3 at the plate in the game. Clayton Garland failed to get a hit, ending his 23-game hit streak.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 15, Truman 5 (7 inn.)
Game two had a similar feel early as both teams plated a pair of runs in the first inning. Truman took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but Fort Hays State finally took its first lead of the day at 7-4 with five runs in the bottom half of the fifth.

Truman pulled back within two with a run in the sixth, but the Tiger offense exploded for eight runs in the seventh to win the game by run-rule. An error by the Bulldogs in the seventh led to six unearned runs in the inning. Shane Wade delivered a game-winning walk-off single to cap the eight-run seventh.

Clayton Garland had four hits while Ryan Busboom and Horace Johnson both drove in three. Busboom had a two-RBI double in the eight-run inning and Johnson had a solo homer to trigger the eight-run seventh, then came up later in the inning to deliver a RBI double.

Alex Ellison was the winning pitcher for FHSU, going 6.0 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout. He is now 3-6 on the season. Michael Edlefson, who entered in the top of the seventh with the Tigers leading just 7-5, picked up a save by retiring the side in order in the seventh before the eight-run outburst by FHSU.

The Tigers look to take the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday at 12 pm. Fort Hays State will have its 14 seniors recognized prior to the start of the game which can be heard on KAYS (1400-AM).

– FHSU Sports Information –

Fort Hays State is currently eighth in the MIAA standings and is battling for one of the eight MIAA Tournament spots with just three games remaining in the regular season. Following Sunday, FHSU goes to Northwest Missouri State to end the regular season with a doubleheader on Tuesday (Apr. 23).
