KHAZ Country Music News: Country Stars Salute Willie Nelson on His 80th Birthday

khaz willie nelson 20130430Country music icon Willie Nelson celebrates his 80th birthday Tuesday, but he’s just as vital to the country format as ever.  Willie is even featured on Kenny Chesney‘s Life on a Rock album, hitting stores this week, on the song “Coconut Tree.”  That track talks about the virtues of leaving all your troubles behind while lounging on the island, and Kenny actually lived that song out over the holiday season last year with Willie himself.

“I went to Hawaii and sat around a poker table with Willie for a couple of days. And trust me, we climbed our own “Coconut Tree,” Kenny says with a laugh alluding to Willie’s well-documented love of marijuana.  “It was a lot of fun.”

Kenny adds that it’s an honor to reunite with Willie for this album saying, “I think I’ve done more duets with Willie than anybody in the business, I think.  He sang on my Christmas record years ago.  I think this makes the fourth or fifth one.  Something like that.”

Willie welcomed another country star, Darius Rucker, into his Hawaiian home back in 2000.  Darius was actually down there visiting his vegetarian, actor friend Woody Harrelson, and the lack of meat at Woody’s house was really getting to Darius.  After about eight days, Darius jumped at the chance to head over to Willie’s house with Woody for a little golf and red meat.

Once Willie found out he’d been staying with Woody for about eight days, Willie told Darius, “You need some meat, don’t ya?”

Darius says, “It was great.  His wife was in the kitchen cooking hamburgers and hot dogs.  I spent a couple of days playing golf with Willie and Kris Kristofferson.  That’s still one of the great memories of my life.”

Even those stars who don’t hang out with Willie that often can tell you he is vital to country music as we know it today.  Tim McGraw, whose favorite Willie song is “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” tells ABC News Radio, “I think the great thing about country music is the unique stylists that we’ve had over the years.  The guys who have really blazed a trail of individuality, and nobody’s done that like Willie Nelson has.”

Noting Willie’s early success as a songwriter, Tim goes on to marvel at his run of unique run of hits in the ’70s and ’80s covering everything from duets with Julio Iglesias and Ray Charles to his classic standards album, Stardust.

Tim compares Willie to another musical icon with longevity, Bruce Springsteen, saying, “I don’t think in any genre of music has there been anybody quite like Willie Nelson, and I think he’s one of those guys that will go down, right up there with Springsteen, as one of those guys who’s just part of the fabric of America and the fabric of what makes this country great.”

For Kip Moore, Willie is right up there with his other musical hero, Bob Seger, when it comes to conveying sincerity in a vocal performance.

“Whether it’s all B.S., I don’t know,” Kip says, “but there’s something about their voices that captivate me more than anybody’s as far as drawing me in and believing every single word and holding on to every single word they’re saying.”

Trace Adkins explains that Willie would have been lionized by country fans even if he’d never gone beyond writing country classics like “Crazy.”

Trace tells ABC News Radio, “He has written some classic, classic songs.  I think that’s the biggest thing about Willie.  He’s the whole package.  He’s not just an artist.  He’s not just a singer, not just a guitar player.  He’s a songwriter.  He’s the whole package.  He’s just so unique that he’s just Willie.”

Willie even played a big role in the vocal development of Little Big Town‘s Kimberly Schlapman, who sang a Willie song during her very early days of performing back home in Georgia.

She tells ABC News Radio, “When I was about 13 years old, I started singing publicly a lot, and I would buy those accompaniment tapes to sing with, and my first one I bought was ‘Always on My Mind,’ and I sang that at fairs.”

A host of stars have posted videos and messages at HappyBirthdayWillie.org wishing Willie a happy birthday including fellow Farm Aid founders Neil Young, Dave Matthews and John MellencampStephen Colbert, Sting and Bonnie Raitt also contributed birthday wishes for Willie on the site.

USD 489 Facilities Need Committee Has A New Look

USD489 logo white

The USD 489 Facilities Needs Committee has a new look. USD 489 Board Members Darren Schumacher, Greg Schwartz, & James Leiker resigned from the committee last week to remove any perception of there being a conflict.

With the addition of Josh Waddell to the USD 489 board on July 1, the Facilities needs committee would have had four school board members.

The minutes from the April 26 meeting are below.

Facilities Needs Committee Meeting April 26, 2013 – 7 AM Toepfer Board Room

Attendees: Nick Schwien, Brian Weimer, Josh Waddell, Aaron White, Tom Drees, Pat Lowry, Bryce Young, Tammy Wellbrock, Paul Briseno, Todd Powell, Will Roth, Mark Hauptman, Francis Hammerschmidt, Richard Cain

Visitors: Judy Sherard, Lance Bickle, Greg Schwartz*, Darren Schumacher*, James Leiker *

 Mark Hauptman reviewed the Special Education Addition Concept with the committee (see attached). He covered the needs and concerns involved with appropriate Special Education building space. The drawing was designed to represent the “ideal” space for SPED services.

  1. Est. cost per suite is $2,000,000.
  2. Tom Drees asked about the increasing % of the student population in Sped. Reasonsvary: better identification, environmental issues, and societal issues. Mark does not see this % going down. Will added we are doing a much better job of screening with MTSS.
  3. Mark said we currently have approx. 85 kids now that would need a facility such as this. Each functional room could handle 10 to 11 Sped students. Current functional rooms are located at Roosevelt (2) and Wilson (1).
  4. The high number of restrooms in the suite were questioned. Mark indicated that some days all would be needed.
  5. Mark stated ideally we would need 2 of these suites at 2 elementary buildings and 1 suite at the middle school.
  6. Question asked about fitting these suites into “repurposed” gymnasiums. Could encounter issues with plumbing, would be a good question for the HTK architects.

 HVAC,

  1. Francis said we are waiting for results and the BOE to receive and act on the proposedEnergy Conservation Program.
  2. If we move forward with an ECP, what would be left to include in a bond issue? Francisindicated some minor individual building issues.
  3. Any new building additions would be the most energy efficient possible.
  4. Paul asked that we include the city on water issues when we get into the investmentgrade audit. They may be able to help us out.
  5. Greg asked that the committee to keep in mind 30 years out as we design and ask forcost estimates and to remind HTK of the same.

 HTK – Cost List from Identified Needs
Bryce said he did not want complaints in the future that we as a committee didn’t consider all options

and missed something.

  1. O’Loughlin
    1. RED indicates a section has been edited by Will and Richard based on possibleneeds 10-15 years in the future.
    2. Question asked if O’L is a “long-term” building for the district. Bryce said wehave already agreed that O’L was a part of the 10-15 year plan.
    3. Roosevelt and Wilson will be the major building additions in this project.
    4. Add Computer Lab estimate from HTK.
  2. Lincoln

a. Good as listed

  1. Roosevelt
    a. Include SPED suite and reduce new classrooms accordingly.
  2. Wilson
    a. Include SPED suite and reduce new classrooms accordingly.
  3. Washington a.
  4. Hays Middle a.
  5. Hays High a.
  6. District Re-roofing a.

Washington, Hays Middle and Hays High will be addressed next meeting.

Bryce will not be able to attend the May BOE meeting to report. Patrick will cover May and Bryce will cover June.

The committee will NOT meet on May 3rd.
Next meeting – May 10th. HTK will be in attendance with estimated costs

Volunteer Firefighter Arrested for Arson

Cody-Knox

Although Sheriff Officials are not saying much about an arres for arson, they did release that 20-year-old Cody Knox was booked into the Reno County Jail after a warrant was served for 14 counts of arson. These charges stem from arson’s which occurred between October 16, 2012 through November 27, 2012 in Reno County. Knox will make his first court appearance in the case on May 3.

At the time of the fires, Knox was attending Hutchinson Community College studying fire science and was a volunteer member of Reno County District 4 Fire Department.

District Attorney Keith Schroeder says the fires consisted of grass fires in the county on several occasions. He says they are believed to have been set with a cigarette lighter.

All of them occurring within a few miles of the city of Arlington according to Sheriff Detective Captain Steve Lutz, all the time, he was working for the fire department and going to school at the college.

Lutz says on the last report of a grass fire in the Arlington area, he apparently wrecked his truck and broke his arm. He claims he was headed to the reported grass fire, but Lutz says he believes he was trying to get away from the fire. Lutz wouldn’t speculate on why he set the fires, but that should come out as the case progresses through the court.

Knox is free on 75-hundred dollar bond and is scheduled for a first appearance this Friday at 9:30 a-m

Bridge Repair on US 183 in Ellis County Set to Begin

KDOTIn the next few weeks, two I-70 bridge repair jobs and another bridge job on U.S. 183 in Ellis County are scheduled to resume.
The bridges on interstate are located: At the Ellis Interchange (bridges carrying I-70 traffic at Exit 145, Junction K-247) and the Walker Interchange (bridges carrying I-70 traffic at Exit 172).
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, at times, during construction. The speed limit will be reduced to 60-m.p.h. through the work zone.
The third location is along U.S. 183 Highway over the Smoky Hill River, near Schoenchen.

Traffic will be controlled by flaggers during daylight hours on this project. Minor delays should be expected through the construction time frame, not exceeding 15 minutes. The public should plan their travels accordingly. Please pay attention to the signs and workers within a construction zone and “Give ‘Em A Brake!”
This project began last fall, but temporarily shut down during the winter months.
“The scope of the construction work includes repairing the bridges and placing a polymer overlay on the driving deck of the bridges,” explains KDOT Construction Engineer Nick Rogers, of the Hays construction office.
KDOT awarded the construction contract – totaling $215,902 – to PbX Corporation of Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
The subcontractor RoadSafe Traffic Systems, of El Dorado, will provide traffic control on the projects.
The bridge repair jobs are funded by T-WORKS, the Transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May of 2010; and designed to create jobs, preserve highway infrastructure, and spur economic development opportunities across the state.
Weather permitting, these construction projects will be completed by the early part of this summer.

“American Girl” Helps Ethiopians to Read

ethiopia lanieIt was the perfect opportunity to bring awareness about illiteracy.

A meet and greet with  “American Girl” author Jane Kurtz Saturday afternoon in Hays brought  many of her young fans to the FHSU Robbins Center.  They brought along their own American Girl dolls, and their moms.

The award-winning author talked about her book “Lanie,” part of the popular American Girl series, written in 2010.

Kurtz also talked about Ethiopia Reads.

She is the founder and an executive team member of the international non-profit organization, headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Kurtz spent most of her childhood in Ethiopia and has written many books about that land and people.

The event involved children’s learning activities and drawings for prizes.  Donations for the drawings will be donated to Ethiopia Reads.  The top prizes were Kurtz’s autographed American Girl Doll Lanie, and an autographed FHSU sports package.

Ethiopia Reads helps Ethiopian communities build schools and libraries with the goal of providing much needed in-language books to the children of Ethiopia.  Literacy rates in Ethiopia average less than 50%; Ethiopia is ranked 195 out of 196 countries for adult literacy.

Western Kansas Gang Member Gets 10 Year Prison Term

Najera.jpgA member of a Dodge City street gang targeted in a federal racketeering case has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempted murder, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Monday.

Jason Najera, 29, Dodge City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder in furtherance of racketeering. In his plea, Najera admitted that on Aug. 27, 2011, he used a knife to stab two men he mistakenly believed were members of a rival gang.

On that date, Najera accompanied co-defendant Humberto Ortiz when Ortiz went to a residence at 703 9th Avenue in Dodge City. Ortiz and Najera confronted some men they suspected of being members of the Surenos street gang. Ortiz was a member of Los Carnales Chingones and Najera was a member of Diablos Viejos, both of which were associated with the Nortenos street gang and considered Surenos their common enemies.

When a fight started, Najera used a knife to stab victims Gabriel Rivera and Carlos Ramirez. During the fight, both Rivera and Ramirez were stabbed, with Rivera’s injuries requiring a life-flight to a hospital in Wichita.

In his plea, Najera admitted that as a member of the Diablos Viejos he was part of an ongoing criminal conspiracy involving the Nortenos street gang whose members used murder, robbery, assault and acts of violence to protect and expand their operations.

In January, co-defendant Humberto Ortiz was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison.

Najera and Ortiz were among 23 defendants indicted in 2012 who were charged under the federal RICO Act (Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.) The indictment marked only the second time federal prosecutors in Kansas have filed charges under RICO and VICAR (Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering).

logo-KU-Cancer-Center(AP) – A Kansas City-area couple has donated $2.5 million to the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

The money from Tom and Teresa Walsh of Leawood will support the nurse navigators program. Nurse navigators help patients through appointments, tests, treatments and follow-up, as well as providing emotional support.

The center announced the gift Monday. It said in a news release that the Walshes’ gift will support five new nurse navigator jobs.

Tom Walsh, an entrepreneur, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in 1980. Teresa Walsh co-founded Silpada Designs jewelry, which was purchased by Avon in 2010.

In 2011, the Walshes made a $2 million gift to the cancer center, of which $1 million established the Walsh Family Foundation Patient Navigation Fund.
