Thirty Years in Africa

First Baptist church HaysAfter 30 years as a missionary serving in Kimpese, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Wendy Bernhard is back in the United States and will speak at First Baptist Church of Hays beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, with a potluck meal at the church, 12th and Fort in Hays.

Bernhard taught at the Bible Institute of Kimpese, 120 miles west of the nation’s capital of Kinshasa, in the far western point of the country. In her ministry she used three languages, French, Kinongo and Lingala.

One of her primary missions was working with a team of doctors, pastors and lay people holding “Responsible Living Skills” seminars for young people and advocating for biblical principles of sexual behavior as part of the fight against AIDS.

This ministry included a twice-weekly broadcast on FM Radio Bangu called “Youth: A Jewel and a Treasure,” which focuses on telling young people of their “infinite worth in the eyes of God, and encourage them not to waste their youth, but to live responsibly,” according to the presentation on her Web page.

First Baptist Church, Hays, is a member of American Baptist Churches USA. Bernhard’s mission is with ABC USA’s International Ministries.

More information on Bernhard and her ministry is available at https://www.internationalministries.org/teams/47-bernhard

New Science Standards for Kansas Schools?

Kansas officials will receive an overview thisschool2-150x150 week of the latest draft of new science standards for public schools being developed by a national consortium.

The 10-member State Board of Education will receive copies of the standards on Tuesday from Matt Krehbiel, the Kansas Department of Education official overseeing the state’s work on the Next Generation Science Standards. A final draft of the standards was released April 9.

Kansas and 25 other states are working with the National Research Council on common standards for possible adoption in their public schools, and Kansas officials involved in writing the guidelines contend the goal is to concentrate on core scientific concepts.

The board agreed to give the standards serious consideration for adoption, a decision that could come later in 2013.

Beef Business Down in Kansas

(AP) — Beef cattle numbers in Kansas are at their lowest level in 14 years because of the ongoing drought, but dairy herds are growing slightly to make up for lost cattleproduction in other states.

Hot, dry conditions have been the main factor in the reduced numbers because of dried-up pastures and reduced hay, corn and soybean crops.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports there were 2.05 million cattle on Kansas feedlots March 1, which is 7 percent fewer than at the same time a year ago. Kansas Livestock Association spokeswoman Scarlett Hagins says another dry summer could force some producers out of business.

The USDA says dairy cattle numbers in Kansas have risen slightly, but production is down by about 45 pounds per cow.
