Kansas House Refuses to Cancel Plan to cut State Sales Tax

state-capitolThe Kansas House has unanimously rejected tax legislation from the Senate to send a message that House members don’t want to cancel a planned decrease in the state’s sales tax.

The House’s 120-0 vote Friday night drew laughter and applause from members.

They were considering a plan approved by the Senate for cutting individual income tax rates over the next four years.

To stabilize the budget, senators would keep the sales tax at 6.3 percent. The tax is scheduled by law to drop to 5.7 percent in July.

House members approved a plan to allow the sales tax to drop and cut income taxes less aggressively.

The two chambers have been negotiating over tax proposals. Lead Senate negotiator Les Donovan said the House vote didn’t mean anything.

Alan topped both of those charts with his first Precious Memories release in 2006. That album sold 107,000 copies in its first week, making Alan the only artist to top the Country Albums chart with a gospel album since Charley Pride‘s Did You Think to Pray, back in 1971.

SOUND OFF: KCC vs Midwest Energy Self Regulation

Why should you vote for Midwest Energy to become self regulated?  The energy company held a meeting in Hays Thursday night to explain why you should vote for self regulation.

As a cooperative, customers have the opportunity to give their opinions by voting. Westar Energy is not a coop and customers do not have that option.

A spokesman for the Kansas Corporation Commission told Hays Post “Even if members vote to return most decision making authority from the KCC, the members would still have an opportunity to appeal rate changes with the KCC.  However, since there is an open docket before the commission on the issue, they are not able to say more.

Ballots are in the mail and need to be returned next month.  What do you think of think of the issue?  Tell us in the comments section below.

Kansas Senate Approves Sweeping Anti-Abortion Bill

law

(AP) — The Kansas Senate has approved a sweeping anti-abortion bill that blocks tax breaks for providers and outlaws abortions solely because of the baby’s sex.

The vote was 28-10 Friday on a compromise version of the bill reconciling differences with the House, where passage would send the bill to Gov. Sam Brownback.

The House could vote later Friday. Supporters expect the Republican governor to sign the bill.

The measure also declares that life begins “at fertilization.”

Abortion opponents see that language as a statement of principle, but some critics worry it could have practical implications.

The bill prohibits abortion providers from being involved in public school sex education classes and spells out in more detail what information doctors must provide to patients seeking abortions.
