(AP) – A Kansas City chef has been named the 2013 best chef in the Midwest by the James Beard Foundation.
Colby Garrelts, owner of Bluestem in Kansas City, was named best Midwest chef on Monday.
The annual James Beard awards event was held Monday night in New York. Garrelts has been nominated for the award seven times.
Garrelts is the fourth Kansas City chef to bring home the coveted award. Debbie Gold, Michael Smith and Celina Tio each won the honor while executive chef at the American Restaurant.
Garrelts and his wife, Megan, also own a second restaurant, Rye, in nearby Leawood, Kan.
Other Midwest chef nominees this year included St. Louis restaurateur Gerard Craft of Niche.
