
The Hays High baseball team grabbed a share of the Western Athletic Conference title last night with a sweep of Liberal. The Indians blow the first game open with five in the sixth and win 8-2. Layne Downing throws a no-hitter in the Indians 9-0 game two win. Hays (14-4, 6-2 WAC) shares the league title with Great Bend who split their doubleheader with Garden City.
The Indians wrap up the regular season with a makeup doubleheader in Junction City Friday.
Game 1: Hays 8, Liberal 2
Cole Schumacher (3-0) throws a complete-game two-hitter, walking three and striking out six.
The Indians tied the game in the fourth on Chance Pitcock’s RBI single. They took the lead an inning later on a Marcus Altman RBI single. Hays would score five in the sixth to blow the game open.
Pitcock, Hayden Hutchison and Chandler Rule all had two hits.
Game 2: Hays 9, Liberal 0
Junior Layne Downing (2-1) throws a no-hitter, walking two and striking out nine.
The game was scoreless through three before the Indians put three on the board in the fourth. They would add five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Downing drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a double in the fourth.
