So Far So Good for Ellis County Wheat Harvest

Despite the continuing drought, the Ellis County wheat crop is looking pretty good right now, says Ellis County Extension Agriculture Agent Stacy Campbell.

Monday night’s annual wheat plot tour north of Victoria on L and M Farm brought out about 30 area farmers.

“We have 16 varieties of hard red winter wheat planted side-by-side that are growing and will be harvested, ” says Campbell.  ” Our K-State specialists in agronomy, plant pathology and entomology review the success of each variety in this area, and any diseases or insects they may be prone to.”

Although moisture has been inconsistent, Campbell says there will be wheat to harvest this year in Ellis County.

WHEAT PLOT TOUR 2“It was looking pretty gloomy last fall when we planted, but we finally got some moisture to get the wheat up and went into the winter with some nice stands.  There are places in the county where we’re seeing some pretty lush wheat.”

Another positive for the 2013 harvest, no signs of stripe rust or leaf rust, which was present last year.
