(AP) — Top Republicans in the Kansas Senate don’t yet know whether a new tax plan they’ve pushed through their chamber will find favor with GOP House members.

The bill approved Thursday by the Senate would lower the state sales tax on groceries to 4.95 percent in January while keeping it at 6.3 percent for all other items subject to the tax. The vote was 24-15.

House members could take an up-or-down vote Friday on the measure, deciding whether to send it to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

But House Speaker Ray Merrick also could send the bill to committee and effectively block its passage.

The 6.3 percent sales tax is scheduled by law to drop to 5.7 percent in July. Brownback wants to cancel the decrease and cut individual income taxes.
