Western Kansas Girl Earns Top Scout Honor

Brooke LockhartThe Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout age 14-18 may earn, and 11 Girl Scouts across the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland council recently accomplished this coveted honor over the 2012-2013 season.
Brooke Lockhart, a 2013 Graduate of Goodland High School, focused her Gold Award project on increasing tourism off of I-70 into the heart of her hometown. Brooke shared, “My goal was to spark an interest in visitors to explore my community and their own.” Brooke worked to organize and personalize a tour of local points of interest including historical and cultural. The tour is available online for mobile devices as well as an electronic kiosk located on site of the giant Van Gogh painting, a Goodland treasure.

Brooke collaborated with city clubs and organizations as well as Karen Anderson, Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for the City of Goodland to insure the success of her project. Karen said, “Brooke’s tenacity and leadership on this project have been refreshing.”

The Girl Scout Gold Award takes most Girl Scouts nearly two years to complete, but is well worth the effort. Gold Award recipients are eligible for special scholarships and are even automatically advanced one rank in any branch of the U.S. military.
