Allison Hohmann has earned the gold medal.  Actually, it’s the Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout ages 14-18 can achieve.

Hohmann will be a senior at Thomas More Prep Marian High School in Hays.

She started as a Daisy Girl Scout in kindergarten.  Her mother, Donna, has always been her troop leader.  Donna  had the honor of pinning the Gold Award on Allison’s sash during a recent ceremony.

Hohmann, a member of  Girl Scout Troop No. 10214, designed and created 24 Dual Language Leaner literacy activity kits for preschoolers in Spanish-speaking families in USD 489.

She recorded storybooks on CDs in both English and Spanish and created  hands-on games to reinforce the concepts being taught.

It took 132 hours and two years to complete the project.

The kits are kept at Lincoln Elementary School, where Hohmann attended grade school, and can be checked out by all teachers in USD 489.

Just 6 percent of Girl Scouts worldwide earn the coveted Gold Award;  Hohmann is one of 11 in the Kansas Heartland council who accomplished it this year.

After she graduates from TMP, Hohmann says she plans to attend college and become a teacher.
