Moran: Our Immigration System is Broken

On Monday, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran released the following statement on his vote against Senate Amendment 1183, as well as his stance on S. 744, the Border Jerry MoranSecurity, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act:

“Our immigration system is broken and our borders are not secure. Rather than focus on solving one or two issues at a time and delivering the reforms Americans are asking for, the Senate has chosen to lump every immigration and border security problem together into one massive and flawed bill. Americans are keenly aware of where this irresponsible method of legislating has gotten us in the past – but the Senate has clearly learned nothing from the failure of the 1986 immigration reform bill, and more recently the rushed passage of Dodd-Frank and Obamacare.

“Not surprisingly, the open debate Americans were promised has been replaced by backroom talks, limited amendments and excessive haste. On an issue of such significance, the American people deserve to have their voices heard through a process that allows their elected representatives to offer and vote on amendments. Even the failed immigration bill of 2007 had a more open process, with 46 amendments being voted on compared to just 10 amendments to the current bill.

“The most recent of these amendments is a hastily crafted ‘border security deal’ that promises to finally secure the border. Yet, time and time again Congress has passed laws directing the administration to secure the border, only to see those directives never fully implemented. If Congress is going to link a pathway to citizenship to the promise of border security, Americans deserve assurances up front – not flexible enforcement provisions and exceptions.

“Americans want Congress to fix our flawed immigration system the right way, and fix it for good. A 1,000-page bill that the Congressional Budget Office estimates would only reduce the number of illegal immigrants by 25 percent does not meet this standard. There are many issues on which Republicans and Democrats agree – such as making certain American companies have the high-skilled talent they need to grow and create jobs – and I believe the Senate could have passed several targeted bills by wide margins. Unfortunately, the ‘we can’t do anything unless we do everything’ approach has prevailed once again. The final result is a massive bill I cannot support because it fails to fix our broken immigration system.”

Kansas anti-abortion law faces Test

(AP) — A federal judge in Kansas will hear arguments this week on Planned Parenthood’s request to stop parts of the state’s new abortion restrictions from taking effect in July.Abortion 001

Chief Judge Kathryn Vratil has scheduled a hearing Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan.

Planned Parenthood wants Vratil to issue a temporary order against enforcement of parts of the new law.

The group’s Overland Park clinic and the clinic’s medical director filed suit last week over a section detailing the information that patients must receive before abortions — including a statement that abortion ends the life of a separate human being.

The lawsuit argues those requirements violate free-speech rights. Backers of the law believe it protects patients.

Harvest Steady, Not Yet Busy

A truck delivers grain to the Midland Marketing downtown Hays location on Monday evening.

Harvest in the area is not as busy as many expected by this time and there are no custom cutters reported in the region.

However, an employee at Midland Marketing’s Toulon elevator east of Hays told Hays Post last night, “We are filling up pretty fast. We’ve been busy and have taken in more grain than both the Hays and Yocemento elevators. Toulon took in approximately 70,000 bushels on Monday with test weights from 56-61.5 and moisture content from 9.6-11.2.

Midland Marketing’s downtown Hays location was “steady” and they had received just over 18,000 bushels on Monday with test weights averaging 60.

Yocemento, west of Hays reported they were doing better than expected but still slow. They had taken in approximately 24-26,000 bushels on Monday. Test weights were reported from 58-60 and moisture averaged at 11.

In Ellis, the Golden Belt elevator said they were “steady” on Monday with dry wheat and tests weights of 57-62.

The staff at Cargill in Trego County told Hays Post on Monday evening “We really got going at both our WaKeeny and Ogallah locations. We had over 20 trucks deliver wheat. It looks good too with test weights over 60 and we expect to be very busy by Wednesday or Thursday.

About 8% of the Kansas wheat crop has been harvested thus far, according to Kansas Ag Statistics. While farmers in central Kansas are enjoying a better than average harvest so far, farmers in western Kansas are not quite as fortunate.

Matt Overturf with Skyland Grain in Johnson says much of the crop in Stanton and Hamilton counties has already been abandoned due to drought and freeze stress; what’s left is yielding between 5 and 15 bushels per acre. Company-wide, red wheat is averaging 58.8 pounds per bushel; white wheat is 59.7 pounds per bushel but no protein values have been reported. Overturf says he expects the company to take in just 10% of a normal crop.

Darwin Ediger, Meade, planned to finish wheat harvest Monday. It’s been a disappointing crop, with yields ranging from 10 to 20 bushels per acre, with test weights averaging about 58 pounds. About half the wheat in the Meade area was destroyed, making for a dismal harvest.

Paul Weber, manager of the Pride Ag Resources location in Hanston says harvest has been in full swing since last week. So far the location has taken in 100,000 bushels of good wheat, with a 59 pound per bushel test weight average but protein levels averaging about 14. He says it is too early to tell how this year’s crop will compare to previous years.

The crop is doing better near Otis, where Kansas Wheat Commissioner David Radenberg had cut 100 acres before a rain shower Monday morning stopped harvest. He estimates yields in the area will exceed 40 bushels per acre, although test weights vary from 56 to 61 pounds per bushel. Radenberg says there is some lodging in many of the area wheat fields, and some of his crop was hit hard by a hailstorm a few weeks ago.

Ken Wood, KAWG Director from Chapman, began harvesting Sunday afternoon and is pleased with test weights early on; the crop averages about 61 pounds per bushel, but no protein values are available. Although farmers in northern Dickinson County are just starting the harvest, Wood expects the crop to be above average, with early yield results ranging from 55 to 60 bushels per acre.

One-Third of Voter Registration Applications ‘in suspense’

kansas

(AP) — Records from the Kansas secretary of state’s office indicate one-third of all voter registration applications submitted this year are in a state of “suspense” because the applicant failed to provide proof of citizenship.

310 of the 370 applications in suspense in Douglas County came from the state’s Division of Vehicles, where people getting their driver’s licenses often register to vote.

More than 11,000 applications submitted since Jan. 1 are in suspense, while 20,780 voters have been added to the rolls during that period.

A $40 million upgrade to the Division of Vehicles computer system was supposed to store electronic copies of birth certificates and other proof-of-citizenship documents and send them to election officials, but Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew says that hasn’t happened.

Ex-cadet Enters Plea Over Battery at Kansas School

427020_400441703306461_1129279042_n
(AP) — A former cadet leader accused of assaulting a younger student at a Kansas military school has struck a deal with prosecutors for a 45-day jail sentence.

18-year-old David J. Burke, of McLean, Va., entered an Alford plea Monday to a reduced charge of aggravated battery. Such a plea means he does not admit the act, but acknowledges prosecutors could likely prove it.

Burke was a student at St. John’s Military School in Salina. The judge on Monday revoked his bond so that Burke could begin serving the proposed jail time, although his sentencing won’t take place until early August.

Burke’s lawyer says the agreement avoided trial on more serious charges of sexual battery. Prosecutor Christina Trocheck says the younger student agreed to the deal.

Police Looking for Suspect & Vehicle

Police are looking for a vehicle and suspect involved in a couple of incidents in Southwest Kansas.police.jpg

Dodge City Police Chief Craig Melleker told Hays Post they are actively searching for the individual involved in the latest incident on Saturday night.

“At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, an 18 year old female was walking home in the 1700 block of Avenue F in Dodge City when she was approached by a Hispanic male in a white suburban. The Hispanic male asked her if she wanted a ride home. When she refused, the male followed her several blocks to her home.

This male was described by the victim as having a very dark complexion. He had short black hair and he spoke with a heavy accent indicative of Spanish being his primary language.

The vehicle and suspect description match a similar incident that occurred on 06/16/2013 in Dodge City, when a 16 year old female was approached by a Hispanic male who tried to force her into his vehicle.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s, approximately 5’8, 150-170 pounds, muscular build with black hair, and a very dark complexion. His hair is shaved on the sides and spiked on top.

The suspect vehicle is described as an early 2000s model white suburban or similar looking SUV. It has tinted windows and shiny wheels (rims).

Dodge City police are asking for the public’s help in identifying this Hispanic male and his vehicle.

Anyone who may have information about this incident is encouraged to call one of the numbers below with their information:

Wind Developer Abandons Ellis County Project

While one commercial developer of wind projects, Invenergy, LLC, recently received a conditional use permit from Ellis County, another Iberdrolahas now informed local residents they have abandoned their effort to develop a wind project in Ellis County.

In 2008, Ellis County Commissioners approved a conditional-use permit allowing Iberdrola Renewables, LLC to proceed with a Hays wind project.

In a registered letter delivered to many residents in the area today, Iberdrola Renewables, LLC said, “A variety of circumstances have led the company to the conclusion that it cannot move forward with developing the wind resources on the Property. As such, pursuant to the terms of the Agreement, Iberdrola Renewables, LS is terminating the Agreement effective July 20, 2013. Iberdrola Renewables, LLS will execute the record and memorandum evidencing the release of any rights and interest in the property. Also, pursuant to the terms of the Agreement, should a meteorological tower be currently located on your property, it shall be removed as soon as practicable. We appreciate your prior commitments and confidence in Iberdrola Renewables, LLC and thank you for your interest in renewable energy development. “

KHAZ Country Music News: Zac Brown Band Membership Gives Family Man John Driskell Hopkins Plenty of Time at Home

khaz zac brown band 20120626Balancing his membership in the Zac Brown Band with his role as a father can get delicate for bass player John Driskell Hopkins.  Fortunately, he’s in a band that gives him the best of both worlds.

“Being away from the family is always the hardest part,” John tells Buffalo.com.  “But the guys in the band and I feel like we’re living two lives — the rockstar life and the daddy life.  We don’t go on tour for months at a time.  We’ll be gone for four or five days and then we’ll be home for four or five days.”

John knows that kind of touring schedule is a walk in the park compared to what other musicians go through leaving their families behind.

He says, “Some bands are gone for months and they come back with the locks on the door changed.  We really value family time so we make sure it’s a priority.”

Check out ZacBrownBand.com to see where they’re playing next.
