Kansas merchant admits selling counterfeit goods

court.jpg

(AP) — A man accused of selling counterfeit shoes and clothing at a store in northeast Kansas has pleaded guilty in federal court.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says 45-year-old Jehad Shalabi pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit trademark goods.

Shalabi, of Blue Springs, Mo., operated a store called Joe Black in Kansas City, Kan. FBI agents reported making undercover purchases in 2011 of phony Nike shoes, a fake Polo Ralph Lauren shirt and other items.

Agents later seized nearly 600 counterfeit items with such trademarks as Major League Baseball, Ed Hardy, Rocawear and Coogi. Prosecutors said the counterfeit goods account for roughly 20 percent of the store’s weekly sales of up to $6,000.

Shalabi is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

Trego County Hospital Administrator Resigns

CourtoisHarold Courtois has resigned as the administrator of Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital to accept a similar position in Russell.

After just over a year and a half, at the Trego County Hospital, Courtois is returning to Russell Regional Medical Center where he was Lab Director from 1983 to 1991.

Courtois said that while he is sad to be leaving the hospital it is in a much better financial situation now than when he came to WaKeeney in November of 2011.

Courtois said they’ve been able to hold their own since the no-fun warrant, “We’re actually doing better than that. We’ve got $1.2 million in reserve and building that.”

His last day at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital is Friday July 12th and he starts in Russell on Monday July 15th.

Courtois grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School.

He says, “Obviously, we never want anyone to be in danger, but we know lots of people plan trips to come together for one of these shows — and you hate for them to lose their travel, their hotels.”

Jefferson County’s Perry Lake and Russell County’s Wilson Lake are ranked 84th and 86th on the national list.

The list of the top 100 bass lakes for 2013 was developed by consulting state agencies on catch rates, population studies and stocking schedules for all the fisheries they managed.

From there, the list is sent to B.A.S.S. Nation presidents and conservation directors to rank each of these bodies of water based on the tournaments they held.

Then a panel of Elite Series pros, outdoor writers and industry professionals finalize the lakes list and rankings.

Finally, more than 3,500 B.A.S.S. members offered their opinions and rankings regarding their region.

Caution: Road Work Ahead

fhsuroadworkThe replacement of concrete paving at College Drive, from the Union loading dock to the intersection of North Campus Drive/College Drive, is underway on the Campus at Fort Hay State University.

This work will require the closure of that segment of College Drive until work is completed. The project is scheduled to be completed no later than August 9.

Both Union parking lots will remain open for use throughout construction. However, the eastern portion of the south Union parking lot will be closed to facilitate construction of a revised entrance to that lot.

Access to the Union parking lots will be available at the northwest entrance near the Motor Pool.

During the term of construction, pedestrians are advised to cross College Drive south of the Union loading dock area, or at the North Campus Drive/College Drive intersection.

Tuition Will Go Up at FHSU, says President

FHSU TigerTuition prices will be going up at Fort Hays State University and other Regents institutions.

The state legislature has cut the schools’ budgets 1.5%.

That’s a reduction of more than $845,000 for Fort Hays State. President Ed Hammond is not happy but he hopes the loss of state funding will be mitigated by savings in energy costs when the university’s two new wind turbines go on line August 1:

Hammond says FHSU will propose a 3.42% tuition increase next year and an increase of 47 cents per credit hour in required fees,or 1.43%.

Is Kansas K-12 spending short of requirements?

Screen Shot 2013-06-18 at 12.29.36 PM(AP) — A state Department of Education report shows that Kansas legislators have authorized school spending for the next two years that is more than $650 million below what is required by law.

The report was included as part of the State Board of Education’s June meeting agenda but discussion was omitted after additional time was devoted to academic standards.

Deputy Commissioner of Education Dale Dennis’ report shows the difference between what the state is required by law to spend on public schools and what was authorized for fiscal years 2014, which begins July 1, and again in 2015.

The figures have been known for some time and a district court has ordered legislators to make up the differences in spending. The Kansas Supreme Court is reviewing that order.
