Farm Service Agency County Committee Nomination Period Begins Monday

USDA logoKansas Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director Adrian J. Polansky announced today that the nomination period for local FSA county committees begins on Monday, June 17.

“I encourage all eligible farmers and ranchers to participate in this year’s county committee elections by nominating candidates by the August 1 deadline,” said Polansky. “County committees are a vital link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provide an opportunity to farmers and ranchers for their opinions and ideas to be heard. We have been seeing an increase in the number of nominations of women and minority candidates and I hope that trend continues.”

To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate.

Farmers and ranchers may nominate themselves or others, and organizations representing minorities and women also may nominate candidates. To become a candidate, an eligible individual must sign the nomination form, FSA-669A. The form and other information about FSA county committee elections are available online at www.fsa.usda.gov/elections. Nomination forms for the 2013 election must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business on Aug. 1, 2013. Elections will take place this fall.

While FSA county committees do not approve or deny farm ownership or operating loans, they make decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs and other agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms. Nationwide, there are about 7,800 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. Committees consist of three to 11 members that are elected by eligible producers.

FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters beginning Nov. 4. The voted ballots are due back to the local county office either via mail or in person by Dec. 2. Newly elected committee members and alternates take office on Jan. 1, 2014.

Saline, Smoky Hill River Basins Survey

stream surveyCrew members from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) Stream Survey and Assessment Program are traveling across the state this summer to collect information regarding the health of Kansas’ flowing waters.

From May through August, a team of biologists, stream ecologists and numerous volunteers will visit 45 sites in nearly 20 different counties to study a vast array of aquatic life.

Primary survey sites this summer include the Saline and Smoky Hill River basins.

Since 1994, KDWPT has been surveying and assessing streams to establish and maintain an inventory of the fish, mussels and other aquatic invertebrates found in Kansas’ 12 river basins. The results and samples from each site are used to help manage native aquatic communities, including threatened and endangered species and species in need of conservation.

Did Sue Boldra Vote for A Massive Tax Increase?

Did I read that right? On May 30th State Rep. Sue Boldra was one of only eighteen members of the Kansas House to vote for a massive tax increase estimated at $767 Million over the next four years. Among other things the bill would have permanently raised the Kansas sales tax from 5.7 to 6.3 percent, cut the standard deduction for married couples from $9000 to $6500, and cut home mortgage and charitable contribution deductions by fifty percent.

And that’s the same Sue Boldra who only last fall, with her State Chamber-funded advertising, falsified and vilified Eber Phelps’ record, portraying him as some wild-eyed big-spending liberal because he voted for a temporary sales tax increase? Wow! No wonder many feel so cynical towards politicians.

Former Kansas Detective Appeals DEA Agent Corruption Lawsuit

dea

(AP) — A former Kansas City, Kan., police detective has filed an appeal after losing a lawsuit claiming he was punished for refusing to conceal a motorist’s beating by federal agents.

Attorneys for Max Seifert filed a notice of appeal Friday seeking to reverse the summary judgment granted two days earlier to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, the sheriff and an undersheriff. Seifert wants the opportunity to present his claims to a jury.

Seifert alleged in his lawsuit he was retaliated against after investigating Drug Enforcement Administration agents involved in a 2003 road-rage incident that left a man with permanent brain damage.

His attorneys said in a statement Friday that Seifert’s testimony was crucial in that case in proving the agents had “mistreated and beaten a helpless citizen.”
