“9 to 5” Goes Overtime

Hays TheatreInstead of going home after a typical business day, members of the Hays Community Theatre’s performance of “9-5” looks to be getting more than just overtime.

“It’s going to be a high energy show. In turn, the audience is going to feel that energy,” says director Brandon Smith. For six weeks at three hours a day, volunteers of the community team up to perform the Tony winning production.

“You get to see people that you know, (like the) mailman.”

The actors culminate for performances on July 11-13 at 7:00 and a Sunday July 14 matinee at 2, staging at Thomas More Prep-MarianHigh School. Tickets are between 7-8 dollars.

From the mailman, a next door neighbor or fresh faces, “People get to see something new and something different. What they haven’t seen on the stage before.”

Kansas Scales Not Measuring Up

kansas-department-of-agriculture(AP) – Department of Agriculture officials are asking all licensed scale service companies to attend a meeting to discuss the low accuracy rate of heavy-capacity scales.

The meeting will be June 27 at the department’s Topeka headquarters.

Tim Tyson, director of the department’s Division of Weights and Measures, said in a letter that large scale accuracy rates are lower than in recent years. The state also has a new policy requiring a third party to place scales on new scale installations.

This week that state inspectors approved only 19 of the 72 heavy-capacity scales between July 2012 and February 2013. Almost half the scales did not meet state accuracy standards.

About 4,000 heavy capacity scales in Kansas weigh agricultural products, scrap metal, recyclables and other materials.

General Government: City Code

Mayor Johnston noted that the purpose of the Special Meeting was to discuss the consideration of sale and/or discharge of fireworks within the City of Ellis.

Councilmember John Walz began discussion by informing Council of the decision made by other surrounding counties on whether or not to allow the discharge of fireworks.

Mayor Johnston questioned if it was a conflict to allow fireworks while the City is currently in Stage 3 watering restrictions.

Fire Chief Denis Vine noted that it is not realistic to predict the weather conditions three weeks from now.  His recommendation is to not allow fireworks but if conditions improve, then to revisit closer to July 4th.

Councilmember John Leiker moved to adopt Resolution No. 494 making it unlawful for any person to discharge fireworks inside the City of Ellis.  Councilmember Terry Redetzke seconded the motion.  Upon a call from the Mayor for further discussion, Councilmember Walz noted that the Council should readdress the Resolution if the City would receive significant rain.  Chief Vine noted that a compromise allowing only ground fireworks and banning the aerial fireworks might be a possibility.  Police Chief Taft Yates asked the Council to please publish the decision in the official newspapers and other places around town to help inform the public.  Upon a call for a vote, the motion carried 5-0.

ADJOURNMENT

Councilmember Steve Ferland moved to adjourn the meeting.  Councilmember John Walz seconded the motion. The motion carried 5-0.  The meeting adjourned at 7:10 a.m.

PAC: More Kansas Women Need to Run for office

(AP) — Members of a political action committee say they want more women to seek political office in Kansas.Kansas Advancing Women

The PAC, called Kansans Advancing Women, was created last November. One of its creators, Laurel Maslowski of Lawrence, says women have experiences and voices that need to be a bigger part of the political process.

Maslowski says the PAC is recruiting progressive female candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties. She noted only 39 of the 165 people in the Kansas Legislature this session were women, the lowest number in 15 years.

She says the state has a history of electing women to political office and needs to return to that value.

Maslowski hopes to recruit both men and women to join the PAC’s efforts.

FHSU’s Schmidt-Bickel Indoor Training Facility Nearing Completion

There are still a few small items to finish, but for the most part, Fort Hays State’s new Schmidt-Bickel Indoor Training Facility is complete. Crews recently put down the floor for the new weight room and late this week were putting the finishing touches on the 65-yard field inside the 50,000 square feet facility.

Crews have also started to rip out the old turf inside Lewis Field. The new playing surface, which will be similar to the one inside Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, will be ready to go for the start of the FHSU training camp in August.

The governor’s office says Brownback and state Commerce Secretary Pat George expect to spend a week in Paris, starting Monday.

They’ll be joined by representatives of the Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition and several Kansas-based aviation businesses. Wichita is an aviation hub, and the state has more than 30,000 aviation workers and 200 industry suppliers.

Brownback also is touting the state’s tax climate as attractive to aviation. The Republican governor has pushed over the past two years to decrease personal income taxes.

Kansas had nearly $12 billion in exports last year, with aircraft sales topping $2 billion.
