Governor will sign Kansas Tax Bill Today

(AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback has scheduled two ceremonies to sign a tax bill that makes additional cuts to the Kansas income tax rate while lowering the sales tax Sam_Brownback_official_portrait1rate.

The Republican governor will sign the bill at stops today at a construction site in Overland Park and a business in Wichita.

Legislators sent Brownback the bill on June 2, following massive individual income tax cuts enacted last year. The measure cuts income tax rates again over the next five years.

But those new rate reductions are tied to other revenue-raising measures, including a provision setting the sales tax at 6.15 percent.

The mix of policies in this year’s bill is expected to generate a net gain in state revenues of $777 million over the next five years.

Possible Hazardous Leak Contained at Good Samaritan Center

Screen Shot 2013-06-12 at 9.51.46 AM On Tuesday evening  on-duty City of Hays fire crews and police officers were dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at the Hays Good Samaritan Center; 2700 Canal Blvd.

While responding, information was received that there was smoke in the building and a general alarm was sounded for off-duty firefighters and Ellis County EMS to respond.

On arrival, firefighters found that air conditioning refrigerant had leaked and caused a smoke like mist that filled one wing of the building. Air conditioner refrigerant leaking into a confined space may be hazardous if it displaces the oxygen.

Following their emergency plan, Good Samaritan staff promptly relocated residents into safe areas while firefighters used smoke ventilation fans to remove the refrigerant vapors from the atmosphere. Working with the Good Samaritan nursing staff, Ellis County EMS paramedics surveyed the residents for medical concerns and found none.

The refrigerant vapors were quickly removed from the structure allowing the Good Samaritan staff to return the residents to their rooms. The City of Hays Fire Department would like to commend the Hays Good Samaritan staff for their professional response.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brad Paisley Trades in Tricks for Treats on His Beat This Summer Tour

khaz brad paisley 20130404Brad Paisley hasn’t unleashed any of his legendary pranks on the opening acts on his Beat This Summer just yet. Instead, he’s been treating them to outings to the movies and trips to the go-cart track in the past few weeks. So, why is Brad being so nice to this year’s openers, including Lee Brice, Chris Young and The Henningsens?

He explains, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to tour and only get these acts out one time, and I like to try to make it really hard for another headliner to give ’em a better time, you know?”

Brad still remembers the artists who treated him well on the road, including Brooks & Dunn. The duo would rent out a club near the venue they were playing so they could just chill out and play music with the opening acts, including Brad and Rascal Flatts at the time.

“We would go out and jam,” Brad says. “We would all get up and just do everything from Mellencamp songs to George Jones songs. It was a real camaraderie.”

Brad wants to take his touring buddies out to see Man of Steel this weekend, so fans in Orange Beach, AL may want to head to their local movie theater after his shows there Saturday night.
