Expect Security Changes at the Courthouse

Ellis County Commissioners will  discuss Concealed and Carry law at tonight’s meeting.  el co courthouse

Ellis County Administrator Greg Sund  told Hays Post, “The only building we might be looking at to provide security is the Court House. There is no way we can afford to meet the requirement of the law to make it a no carry facility,” he said.

“For the courthouse, we will have to have a security desk where all people entering the courthouse will go through metal detectors and to make sure they aren’t carrying anything. It’s a very involved process.  In the past and even now, the two deputies assigned to the courthouse also act as bailiffs for the court. If we make it a secure location, at least one of them is going to have to be at the security desk at all times.  I’m not sure if this will change how we do bailiff duties or if it will eventually cost the county more money?”

KZ Country Cheesy Joke of the Day 6/10/13

khaz cheesy joke logo 20110802Older Than the Beatles

A professor of psychology at a British university included a lecture on crowd psychology in his annual course. To illustrate mass hysteria, he regularly showed TV news footage of teenage crowds greeting the Beatles at the local airport in the 1960’s.

One year, when he ran the footage, he heard squeals and bursts of
laughter from his students. When the film ended he asked what had caused
the hilarity.

Replied one student, “we recognized some of our parents!”

Kansas science standards vote Could be Tuesday

Kansas State Board of Ed(AP) — The chairwoman of the Kansas State Board of Education says it’s uncertain when the panel will vote on proposed science standards for public schools.

The board’s agenda for a meeting Tuesday includes a vote on guidelines that would replace standards adopted in 2007. But Chairwoman Jana Shaver said she isn’t sure the board will want to vote then.

The Independence Republican noted the vote is scheduled shortly after a public comment period. Shaver said members may consider delaying the vote depending upon the comments made.

The Next Generation Science Standards were developed by 26 states, including Kansas. They emphasize hands-on projects and starting instruction about core concepts in kindergarten.

Past debates on science standards in Kansas have centered on teaching evolution. Both the existing and proposed standards are evolution-friendly.

Jury faces tough decision in former lawman’s trial

(AP) — Jurors have a tough decision to make when they begin deliberations in the case of a former Kansas lawman accused of shooting his wife and setting their seacathouse on fire while the couple’s young children slept down the hall.

Prosecutors have portrayed Brett Seacat as a killer who used his law enforcement training to forge a suicide note before shooting his wife, Vashti Seacat, in their home during the early morning hours of April 30, 2011. But defense attorneys have presented evidence of suicide that may raise enough reasonable doubt for an acquittal.

Closing arguments are today

The 37-year-old Kingman man faces life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for 50 years if convicted of first-degree murder. He is also charged with aggravated arson and two counts of child endangerment.

Edward Snowden: whistleblower behind NSA surveillance revelations NEW VIDEO

This is an interview with the 29-year-old “source” for the biggest intelligence leak in the NSA’s history. Edward Snowden explains why he did it and what his future may hold.

(AP) — A Hawaii real estate agent today says Edward Snowden and his girlfriend moved out of their home in a quiet neighborhood near Honolulu on May 1, leaving nothing behind.

Century 21 real estate agent Kerri Jo Heim says Sunday that police came by on Wednesday to ask where the couple went. Heim told them she didn’t know.

Snowden is a 29-year-old contractor who says he’s the source behind reports about the U.S. government’s secret surveillance programs. The Guardian newspaper reported Sunday that he was working in a National Security Agency office in Hawaii. He left for Hong Kong on May 20 and has remained there since.

Carolyn Tijing, who lived across the street from Snowden, says the couple had moving boxes lining their garage from floor to ceiling before leaving the neighborhood suddenly.
