KidsAndCars.org reports the following deaths in a 16-day period in May:
A girl, 5 months, died May 10 in El Paso, Texas, after her mother, a high school teacher, unknowingly left her behind in her SUV.
A boy, 4, died May 15 in Transylvania County, N.C., after his grandmother forgot to drop him off at daycare.
A boy, 11 months, died May 16 in Miami, Fla., died after being left behind in his mother’s car.
A girl, 1, died May 17 in Dallas, Texas, after her mother, an elementary school teacher, unknowingly left her behind in her vehicle.
A boy, 1, died May 24 in Corpus Christi, Texas, after his uncle forgot to drop him off at daycare.
A boy, 18 months, and girl, 2 months died May 26 in Glen Allen, Va., when they were left in the car while the mother was at work.
All of the children were left by a family member, and all but one child were under age 2.

“The worst thing any parent or caregiver can do is think that this could never happen to them, that they are not capable of inadvertently leaving their child behind,” says Janette Fennell, founder and president of KidsAndCars.org, the leading national nonprofit child safety organization working to prevent injuries and deaths of children in and around motor vehicles.

“This can and does happen to the most loving, responsible and attentive parents.” Since the group began tracking data, more than 675 children have died in these preventable tragedies.

KHAZ Country Music News: Shania Twain Honored for Making Las Vegas Smell Great

khaz shania twain 20130603Shania Twain has won multiple awards for her music, but her latest trophy from the Scent Marketing Institute has more to do with her keen sense of smell. Shania recently picked up a SMItty award from the organization for Most Innovative Use of Scent Marketing for her Vegas show, Shania: Still the One.

Here’s how she earned it. At the top of the concert, the air in the The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is infused with Shania’s fragrances Still the One Day and Still the One Night before transitioning into a saloon scent reminiscent of leather, and then into a campfire fragrance.

Shania says, “Creating my new show, Shania: Still the One, was artistically fulfilling, and receiving this award is yet another level of reward I hadn’t even imagined.  I’m proud of this unexpected achievement.”

If you’re interested in smelling it all for yourself, tickets for Shania’s show are available at ShaniainVegas.com. Her two fragrances, Still the One Day and Night, are available at The Colosseum boutique.

Study: Big Brothers/Big Sister Program Impacts Mental Health

About a year after being paired with mentors, youth evaluated in a recent study, many of whom had multiple risk factors for delinquency, school failure, teen Mental Healthpregnancy and mental health problems, had fewer symptoms of depression.

The young people were part of the first large-scale evaluation to assess how mentoring affects “higher-risk” youth. Noted mentoring researchers, Carla Herrera, David DuBois, and Jean Grossman studied more than 1,300 youth enrolled in seven mentoring programs, including five Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies.

Youth with mentors, compared to those without mentors who faced similar challenges, improved in their social competence, academic attitudes and grades. The strongest findings were related to decreases in symptoms of depression—an especially noteworthy outcome given that nearly one in four youth in the study reported high levels of depressive symptoms before being matched with mentors.

“Depression has been linked to a host of short- and long-term problems for young people, including suicidal behavior, academic and social difficulties, and increased risk for substance abuse and teen pregnancy,” the researchers reported. “The study’s findings offer robust evidence that participation in volunteer-centered, one-to-one, community-based mentoring programs can ameliorate and/or prevent the emergence of depressive symptoms,” researchers added.

“When young people face multiple life challenges, their families and communities suffer as well,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters President and CEO, Dan Soliday. “While a number of studies have found that one-to-one mentoring helps ‘at-risk’ children, this new research provides important insights about the impact of our work on youth who face a range of issues, including those who face higher levels and severity of risk factors.”

The study revealed the importance of careful screening for mental health concerns at intake, in combination with referral mechanisms for those who are in need of additional support. Of note, the researchers found that while mentoring programs are successful at reaching youth with lower-risk profiles, they are also able to reach those who meet the “higher-risk” threshold, without significant efforts beyond their normal recruitment strategies.

The study found mentors who received early-match training and consistent phone support met more frequently and had longer-lasting relationships with their mentees. Youth whose mentors received in-person group training also reported higher-quality relationships. The researchers noted that offering tailored training and support to mentors, mentees and families based on the specific risks youth face has the potential to produce even stronger benefits.
