A parasite typically seen only in Latin America has sickened hundreds in the United States.
Nearly 300 people from 8 states including Kansas have already become sick. The Iowa Department of Public Health says at least five people have been hospitalized.
Health officials say it possibly came from contaminated food or water. The parasite causes symptoms similar to a viral stomach bug. Doctors say antibiotics can help treat it. The illnesses began in June, leading officials to believe whatever produce caused it may have been eaten or thrown away by now.
