Supporters stage Kansas vigil for ‘Dream 9’ group

(AP) — Opponents of U.S. policies on deportation are preparing to hold a vigil in Wichita for nine people detained in Arizona after Dream 9 protestdemanding re-entry from Mexico on humanitarian grounds.

Among those planning to take part in Friday’s event are relatives of 37-year-old Claudia Amaro, a member of the group dubbed the “Dream 9” following their detentions earlier this week.

The former Wichita woman was brought illegally into the U.S. as a child after her father was murdered in Mexico. She lived in Kansas for more than 17 years but returned to Mexico with her U.S.-born son after her husband’s deportation.

The attempted re-entries by Amaro and the other activists were orchestrated by the National Immigrant Youth Alliance.

Members of Sunflower Community Action say Friday’s event is intended to support the “Dream 9” and protest deportations.
