Explore the world of music and movement with your child in this fast paced class of singing, clapping, wiggling and shaking. Instruments, scarves, body motions and parachute play will keep active babies & toddlers and adults moving, playing and interacting together.

ADULT LEISURE

KANINE KOLLEGE

Kanine Kollege will provide owners with information on traditional methods of socializing and training the family dog. Exercises taught during this six week class includes: heel on leash, sit, come, down and stay. There is a possibility that all of the exercises will not be covered depending on the progress of the class. Owners will be shown how to use positive reinforcement techniques to teach and enforce commands. Owners will be expected to work with their dogs between classes. The instructor will provide assistance to help teach owners how to train their dogs, not train the dogs for you. All owners must have vaccination records with them during the class.

SUMMER SLAM TRIATHLON

The Hays Recreation Commission, in conjunction with Sara Kay Carrell of Wild Within, and Papa Murphy’s Take ‘n’ Bake Pizza, is proud to offer our fourth annual Summer Slam Triathlon. This event consists of a 400 meter swim, 12 mile bike ride, and a 5k run/walk. All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each division (divisions set based on registrations).

State Dems name new Caucus Co-Chair

KDP Chair Joan Wagnon announced this week that Cecilia Ysaac-Belmares of Kansas City, Kansas will serve the Kansas Democratic Party as the KDP Hispanic

Caucus Co-Chair. Ysaac-Belmares currently serves as both Vice Chair of the Wyandotte County Democratric Party and as Secretary of the KDP’s Third District.

“The Kansas Democratic Party has long enjoyed a strong and productive relationship with the divergent and growing Kansas Latino community,” KDP Chair Joan Wagnon said. “We are confident that Cecilia’s experience as a community advocate and small businesswoman will help deepen and strengthen the bonds that connect Latino Kansans and the KDP.”

A life long resident of Wyandotte County and graduate of the University of Kansas, Cecilia serves as a Commissioner for the Kansas Hispanic & Latino American Affairs Commission. She maintains ties to her community through her membership in MANA de Kansas City, her role as the University of Kansas Medical Center Community Advisor on Latino Health and Research Projects, and participation in the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas Sister Cities program. Cecilia enjoys spending time with her intergenerational family made up of her husband, two children, and father, while still finding time as an entrepreneur and Freelance Interpreter managing an Interpreting and Translation service.

“Community and public service are two values I have long believed in,” said Ysaac-Belmares. “Those values are shared by the Kansas Democratic Party and will guide me in my work as co-chair of the KDP’s Hispanic Caucus. I am excited to start crafting common sense solutions based on the shared beliefs of all Kansans to help make Kansas the best state to live, to work, and to raise a family.”

 

Driver injured when car leaves I-70 and hits Tree

A driver’s car left I-70 and hit a tree in a Friday accident. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Seventy-five year old Karl K Leiker of Westfield, Massachusetts was KHPdriving a 2013 Chrysler 4-door passenger car eastbound on I-70, a half mile west of K-156.

The vehicle left the roadway and traveled southeast down an embankment, crossed the culvert and hit a tree where it spun around and landed facing Northwest. Leiker was transported to the hospital in Salina. He was wearing a seat belt.

Teen’s body recovered from river

(AP) — The second of two teenagers who disappeared in a southeast Kansas river has been found dead.Drown 001

The Montgomery County sheriff’s office says crews recovered the body of 16-year-old Steven Whittley in the Verdigris River shortly after 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Whittley and 16-year-old Bo Miesner were swept beneath a low-water dam near Coffeyville while swimming Wednesday evening.

Whittley dove into the water to try to save his friend but was also pulled under. Rescuers arrived in time to pull Miesner from the river, but he died at a Wichita hospital.

Both boys were from Independence.

Prevention Grant for Hays Clinic

first care clnicFirst Care Clinic in Hays is one of 15 medical clinics across the state to receive a grant for improving preventative services.

The funding, $235,000 total, comes from the Kansas Health Foundation in Wichita. The clinics will receive between $10,000 and $20,000 each, determined by the number of patients each served in 2012.  ks health foundation logo

First Care Clinic will get the maximum, $20,000.

“Kansas ‘safety net clinics ‘ do a tremendous job of providing care under challenging conditions,” says Steve Coen, chief executive of the Kansas Health Foundation, a major fund-provider to the Kansas Health Institute.  “We’re pleased to help these clinics expand and strengthen their ability to provide client services designed to prevent illnesses before they occur.”kansas health institute

Former Kansas cheer coach sentenced for sex with girls

A former Wichita cheer coach has been ordered to spend at least 42 years in prison for having sexual relations with four young girls.Well-Lee

Twenty-nine-year-old Timothy Wells-Lee was convicted in April on 10 counts involving girls age 12 to 14 whom he coached at Wichita cheer academies between 2006 and 2008.

Wells-Lee was sentenced Friday in Sedgwick County District Court to life plus 20 years, with a chance of parole after 25 years. The judge structured the sentence in such a way that Wells-Lee could not be paroled until he’s in his 70s.

Wells-Lee requested a minimum sentence, telling the judge he’s not a threat to society. The girls also spoke Friday, with one telling Wells-Lee he had ruined her life.

 

Big Second Inning Lifts Hays Monarchs to Berth In American Legion State Tournament

The Hays Monarchs used a four-run second inning to build a 5-0 lead Friday night and defeat the Lincoln County Hawks 7-1 in the Zone 6 title game in Lincoln. The victory improves the Monarchs to 18-13 and advances them to the AA American Legion State Tournament next week in Pratt.

Taylor Rome gets the complete game victory, allowing an unearned run on six hits while striking out seven and walking none. His two-run single in the second put the Monarchs up 3-0. They also scored on a Braiden Werth ground out and a Ryan Schippers double. Werth drove in three despite not recording a hit.

Cameron Brin went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.

Ellis American Legion Wins Twice, Forces Second Title Game

The Ellis American Legion won twice on Friday to force a second and decisive title game at the Goodland American Legion Zone Tournament. Ellis defeated Ulysses 17-2 in four innings to advance to the finals then beat Colby 5-3 to force the second title game Saturday at 2pm. The winner advances to the AA state tournament next week in Pratt.

Ellis scored 17 runs on 14 hits. Brandon Bollig and Cadyn McCoy both went 3-for-3 with a walk. Cole Pfeifer was 2-for-3. Koltyn Ratliff had two doubles, Dylan Winter and Conner Frame each had one.

Ellis scored two in the third and had a 4-1 lead after 5 1/2 innings. Colby scored in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2. Ellis answered with a run in the top of the seventh. Colby loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning and scored a run but that would be it.

Brandon Bollig gets the win, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking two.

Cadyn McCoy went 3-for-4 at the plate while Scott Pfeifer had a triple.

Police using facebook to help find a missing Kansas teen

Police in Hutchinson are using facebook to help them find a missing teenager.  On their facebook page today Hutchinson Police wrote, “A Child is Screen Shot 2013-07-26 at 10.03.40 PMmissing alert has been sent out. Madison Jamie Buehler is missing. She is a fourteen year old white female described as being 5’07” and 180 lbs with blond hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing grey shirt and blue jeans in the area of 25th and Halstead. If you have information of where she might be or have seen her, please call us at 694-2834.”  –Lt Pickard #187

Hays Woman Leads National March

A Hays woman leads a national march Thursday in Washington,  D-C.

Lou Ann Kibbee manages the SKIL Independent Living office in Hays.  She is also the Board Vice President of the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL).  Kibbee is attending the annual NCIL Conference this week.

Attendees marched to the U-S Capitol, then held a rally on the lawn by the reflecting pool with speakers including members of Congress and disability rights advocates.

Kibbee and other Kansas participants met with Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran.

“Our priority message is to support bipartisan passage of the WIA bill, ” says Kibbee.  As originally introduced, the Workforce Investment Act, consolidates 35 existing federal workforce programs.

Kibbee plans to run for President of the National County on Independent Living board.
