From a Kansas Water Office press release: The Kansas Water Authority (KWA) continues to highlight the importance of Kansas reservoirs which serve as a vital source of water supply to the state. Chairman Gary Harshberger recently appointed a Reservoir Advisory Committee (RAC), comprised of municipal, industrial, agricultural, recreational and financial stakeholders as well as members of the KWA and current water supply program users to assist in this effort. The RAC will be a key component in developing plans for the Authority.
The first meeting of the RAC will be held Wednesday, July 31 at 10 a.m. at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Learning Center, located on the Wolf Creek Generating Station property just north of Burlington, Kan.
“It is vital we work to secure, protect and restore our state reservoir water supply. Reservoirs provide water in some manner to approximately two-thirds of Kansas’ citizens,” said Kansas Water Authority Chairman Gary Harshberger. “The stakeholder committee structure worked well with the Ogallala Aquifer Advisory Committee I appointed in 2011and I envision this will also be an effective committee to help work on our state’s reservoir issues.”
The Committee will be tasked with four responsibilities:
Review current reservoir storage, usage, need for action and current approach
Identify and recommend funding plan for the dredging of John Redmond Reservoir
Determine appropriate level of sustained funding and revenue options
Identify policy, programmatic and operational changes to improve reservoir sustainability
“The persistent drought that continues to affect our state has really heightened issues with Kansas’ water supply, both surface and ground water,” said Kansas Water Office Director, Tracy Streeter. “An unprecedented level of local, state and federal cooperation is needed to sustain and manage Kansas reservoirs. Our future may depend on our ability to protect stream systems, decrease demand, recover lost storage and develop new supplies for our state.”

As the state’s water office, KWO conducts water planning, policy coordination and water marketing as well as facilitates public input throughout the state.
The agency prepares the KANSAS WATER PLAN, a plan for water resources development, management and conservation. KWO also reviews all water laws and makes recommendations to the Governor and Legislature for needed legislation.

the FHSU campus. Schmidt told those in attendance about setting goals but not missing opportunities in pursuit of those goals. He also shared about his life growing up in Southeast Kansas. Schmidt is a graduate of Independence High School and studied at Independence Community College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, his master’s degree in international politics from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
Toby Keith only agreed to appear on the cover of Forbes magazine as “Country’s $500 Million Man” and talk about his finances because his publicist convinced him to do it. In an interview with The Oklahoman, Toby admitted he’s totally uncomfortable talking about his income, which totaled about $65 million last year alone. In fact, he hasn’t even read the Forbes article yet.
“I’m just a boy from Oklahoma that still drives a pickup truck,” Toby says. “I got some hot rod cars in my barn and in garage ’cause I can — cars I grew up loving — but I’m a pickup guy.”
A big chunk of Toby’s fortune comes from his live shows. He’ll rake in some more cash for his show in Minot, ND Friday night.
Spotty rain showers across much of Kansas this past week were too little to improve drought conditions in western Kansas.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that dryland farm crops and pastures continue to suffer. The agency says it has received reports of failed corn and sorghum crops in areas missed by the rain, as well as fields damaged by hail or wind.
The corn crop’s condition has declined with 30 percent considered in poor to very poor shape. About 39 percent is rated fair, 28 percent is good and 3 percent is in excellent condition.
Sorghum crops also are hurting, with 21 percent reported in poor to very poor condition. About 43 percent is rated as fair, 34 percent as good and 2 percent as excellent.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt today announced that more than 4,000 Kansas consumers who filed claims against Skechers USA Inc.-brand toning shoes will receive refund checks totaling more than $295,000 as the result of a legal settlement. The settlement resolved allegations that Skechers made unsupported health claims in advertising its Shape-Ups, Tone-Ups and Resistance Runner athletic shoes.
The multi-state settlement required Skechers to refund almost $40 million nationally to 509,175 consumers. Kansas consumers are receiving $295,827 for 4,169 claims. Kansas joined 42 other states and the Federal Trade Commission in the settlement.
“Fraudulent marketing practices and questionable advertising claims prevent consumers from making informed decisions,” Schmidt said. “Kansas consumers deserve an honest accounting from sellers.”
Skechers claimed their rocker-bottom shoe products caused consumers to lose weight, burn calories, improve circulation, fight cellulite, and firm, tone or strengthen thigh, buttocks, and back muscles without having adequate support for its claims.
Under the settlement, Skechers is prohibited from making these claims unless it has adequate substantiation to do so. Skechers agreed to provide partial refunds but did not admit any wrongdoing and denies the factual allegations asserted in the complaint.
Consumers with concerns about questionable sales or marketing practices can contact the Kansas Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-432-2310 or visit www.ag.ks.gov for more information.

O’Loughlin Elementary School preliminary concept for student pick up and drop off with the elimination of Victory Drive
O’Loughlin Elementary School preliminary concept for student pick up and drop off with the elimination of Victory Drive
Monday night’s USD 489 Special Board meeting was completed in 90 minutes including two executive sessions to discuss employer and employee negotiations.
The board approved the multi-peril insurance premium from Insurance Planning.
On the closing of Victory Drive for drop-off and pick-up of students at O’Loughlin Elementary School, the board approved plans to run an outlet road to 12th Street, exiting out to 13th street. The board will also discuss asking TMP-Marian for permission to use Victory Drive until the new road is in place. (see the concept drawing)
The board decided to secure a portable chiller for Roosevelt elementary school until a decision can be made to get the air conditioner compressor repaired or the district can get bids to have it replaced.
The board also approved the Financing Agreement with Astra Bank for No-Fund Warrants and Authorized BOE President to sign the agreement as approved by the Board on July 1, 2013.
Due to a school district hardware issue, the special meeting was not broadcast live Monday night. Instead it was recorded and will be broadcast on Hays High Eagle Channel 13.
Senator Jerry Moran shared this video on Monday. “Wheat harvest is a special time of year in Kansas communities. Marjorie Maydew Bell of Smith County, Kansas captures the long days and hard work in her poem “Wheat Harvest.”
Thank you to all the farmers, farm families and everyone who help make it a safe and productive wheat harvest. A special thanks to the Kejr, McHenry, Omli, and Lund families for allowing us to visit your harvest fields. And thank you to Helen Lund for narrating the poem.”

Alabama teamed up with some of country’s biggest stars — including Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney and Florida Georgia Line — for their new Alabama & Friends album. The project, which hits stores August 27, also features two brand-new songs from the group.
As for the superstar guests on the album, Alabama guitarist Jeff Cook says, “It’s very much an honor that they’d take part in an Alabama tribute. We had a lot of fun working with them, and I think the finished product testifies to both the fun and the quality that went into it.”
Eli Young Band, Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts and Trisha Yearwood are among the other stars performing with Alabama on the album. Jamey Johnson closes the album with the Alabama classic, “My Home’s in Alabama.”
Alabama is currently selling out shows on their Back to the Bowery tour. They’ve just added a date at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Sunday, November 3.
