No Burnt Butts After All (As Far as We Know)

cancer council of el co burnt butt postercancer council of el co flesherThere was plenty of sunscreen to go around, so no ACTUAL butts were burned during Saturday morning’s first-ever Burnt Butt 5K fundraiser for the Cancer Council of Ellis County.

The event was held in conjunction with the annual downtown Hays Annual KCBS-sanctioned BBQ contest…hence the race name.

Additional moneys were raised for the Cancer Council as people voted with their dollars to watch someone kiss a real live pig.

Hays firefighters practice carrying an unconscious person (or in this case, a 200 lb. dummy) out of the window and down the ladder during a training session.

Specialized training for the Hays Fire Department resumes after it was interrupted by last Tuesday’s early morning train derailment and fire.

The firefighters are back for hands-on-training using a house on West 4th Street slated for demolition.

Chief Gary Brown says the exercise involves teamwork needed to make an aggressive fire attack and then finding and rescuing an unconscious person, simulated by a 200-pound dummy.

The firefighters practice  moving a fire attack hose quickly through the the building, and then a quick transition to the rescue process.

The two weeks of training is being conducted by a workgroup that includes Firefighters Justin Choitz, Travis Johannes and  Ross Meder.

The training continues Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9 until noon.  The house at, 415 West 4th street is is owned by Dan Meckenstock who allowed the fire department to use it for training prior to demolition.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Gets Back on the Road in a Big Way with Ten Times Crazier Tour

Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Records)Blake Shelton kicked off his Ten Times Crazier tour over the weekend with two shows in Virginia and a Sunday-night date in New York state. Blake is the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, but his busy schedule as a coach on The Voice has kept him off the road a lot lately. That show has also raised his profile enormously, translating into bigger ticket sales for this trek.

“I think if it hadn’t been for The Voice and the success of that show, probably my music career wouldn’t have gotten to the level that it’s at,” Blake says. “I want to make the most of it. This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life is to headline some of these bigger arenas and amphitheaters.”

A member of Blake’s team on The Voice has won the show’s last three seasons, so he obviously knows how to pick talent. Blake used those skills to choose his opening acts on this tour, Easton Corbin and Jana Kramer.

He says, “I know ’em both, and they’re both good kids. I call ’em kids. That’s how old I’m getting now, but they are. They’ve got a lot of energy.”

Defendant Pleads Guilty To Sex Crime While at the State Hospital

A Kansas man has pleaded guilty to an Internet sex crime that took place while he was in the Kansas Sexual Predator Treatment Program at Larned State HospitalBrull

Mark D. Brull, 38, Larned State Hospital, pleaded guilty to one count of transferring obscene material to a child. In his plea, he admitted that while he resided at Larned State Hospital he became friends with co-defendant Ryan J. Dancosse, a resident of Wichita. Brull provided Dancosse with the passwords to Brull’s social networking profiles including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Youtube, as well as his email account. With Brull’s knowledge and agreement, Dancosse found and copied images of pornography and then uploaded the images to Brull’s accounts for others to see and discuss.

FHSU Sports Information Earns National Recognition

Fort Hays State University Sports Information has, once again, earned national recognition for its 2012-2013 publications. Voted on by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), the FHSU Volleyball and Women’s Basketball Media Guides both ranked in the top three nationally within the College Division, which includes all non-NCAA Division I institutions (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA). The volleyball guide ranked second and women’s basketball guide ranked third. Overall, Prickett now has six top-five national finishes for media guides at Fort Hays State. Prickett was assisted on both guides by former graduate assistant Tim Hanson, now Sports Information Director at Newman University.

The FHSU Volleyball Media Guide was the best in NCAA Division II for the second straight year, but edged for Best in the Nation honors this year by NJCAA representative Johnson County (Kan.) Community College. Washburn ranked third, giving the state of Kansas a 1-2-3 sweep nationally in the College Division. In 2011, Prickett teamed with former graduate assistant Doug Self, now Sports Information Director at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, to earn their first-ever Best in Nation honor by CoSIDA for the FHSU Volleyball Media Guide.

This was also the second straight year the FHSU Women’s Basketball Media Guide finished in the top five nationally. The women’s basketball rankings for media guides were nearly identical to volleyball, with Johnson County at the top of the list, Washburn second, and FHSU third, giving the state of Kansas another 1-2-3 sweep. Prickett has gained a top-five ranking for six media guides in his career, which includes volleyball, women’s basketball, and men’s basketball. He has also finished in the top 10 nationally for football media guides.

Jennifer Robinson of Fort Hays State University CTELT designed the covers and all photos in the guides are provided by Mitch Weber, also of CTELT. Fort Hays State University Printing Services printed the guides. The entire layout, including writing and design, of the guide interiors were done by Prickett and Hanson.

Prickett, native of Salina, Kan. and graduate of Fort Hays State, enters his ninth year as Sports Information Director at FHSU in 2013-14.

“Any time an Apollo-era astronaut steps forward with ideas for our future in space, it’s time to stop whatever we’re doing and pay attention. Kansas Man Has Another Reason to be “Quite Happy”

Nelson Worley, 43, of Osawatomie knows a lot about luck.  Worley was clinically dead a year and a half ago after going Lottery 001into cardiac arrest.  A good samaritan brought him back to life.  Saturday night Worley experienced another kind of luck: he won $1,000,000.

“First and foremost, I’m lucky to be alive,” Worley said. “Winning a million dollars?  I never expected that.”

“It’s his good karma coming back to him,” said Shannon, Worley’s wife of 12 years. “He is a great husband, father and provider, and he deserves this.”

The winning numbers in the July 20 Powerball drawing were 14-25-27-38-58 Powerball 6.  Worley matched the first five numbers.  Had he matched the Powerball number in addition to the other five numbers he matched, he would have won a $141 million jackpot.

“I could complain, but why?” joked Kansas’ newest millionaire.  “I’m quite happy.”

Worley said he used to always let the computer pick his numbers for him, but about a month ago he started to pick his own numbers, too.  His winning $4 ticket had two plays, one with numbers Worley picked himself and the other with numbers picked by the computer (Quick Pick).  It was the Quick Pick play that won him the $1 million.

Worley owns his own stucco contracting business, New LLC, in Osawatomie.  He and his wife have five children and one grandchild between them.  The Worleys plan to use their prize money to pay off their house, buy a swing set and make some investments.
