Large Hay Bale Fire Kills Farmer

bale fire wide bale fire msAn Osborne County farmer has died of injuries suffered in a large hay bale fire Thursday night.

Osborne County Sheriff Curt Miner told Hays Post, “Lowell Lund, age 82 of rural Waldo, died from severe burns at a Wichita hospital.  Lund and his son had been hauling bales all day when something started the fire.

Firefighters from Paradise, Waldo, Natoma, Alton, Luray, and Osborne County Rural Fire arrived at the scene in southwest Osborne County about six p.m. Thursday.

Natoma Fire Chief Keith Koelling said many of the 300 bales were already fully engulfed.

The fire continued burning into early Friday morning. “Firefighters burned around the bales, in a controlled burn,” said Miner. “They also dug a ditch and placed the bales there to control the blaze.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Nigerian man sentenced in Kansas for threat

(AP) — A Nigerian man who was convicted on a federal weapons charge in Wichita has drawn an additional five-year sentence for threatening a federal agent’s court.jpgfamily.

The U.S. attorney’s office for Kansas said in a release Friday that 22-year-old Osayuwame  Bazuaye was charged in 2012 with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition after he fired a handgun from the balcony of his Wichita apartment.

While he was in custody on that charge, he was also convicted of threatening to sexually assault the wife and daughter of a deportation officer with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The prosecutor’s office says he was sentenced Friday to five years on the threat charge. The five-year sentence will run consecutively to the two-year sentence he’s serving in the firearms arms case.

KHAZ Country Music News: Luke Bryan Taking the Entire Family Out on the Road This Weekend

khaz luke bryan 20130219Luke Bryan‘s schedule is literally non-stop these days as he prepares to release his new album, Crash My Party, next month and perform sold-out shows on the Dirt Road Diaries tour at the same time.  That doesn’t leave much time for Luke to be at home with his wife, Caroline, and their two young boys, Bo and Tate.  So, he’s bringing them along on the road with him this weekend.

Luke tells ABC News Radio, “I’m getting the bikes’ tires pumped up and we’ll put bikes under the bus, and gonna buy some inflatable swimming pools, and just put ’em out there by all the buses and let ’em play and ride their bikes and throw the baseball and have fun.”

Luke puts a premium on having fun with his family, but keeping the lines of communication open with his wife is just as important. Even though Luke is arguably country’s hottest star right now, he and Caroline face the same challenges as any other couple.

“Well, you have just have to figure it out with any marriage,” he says.  “If I was a banker, I’d come in and I’d be in a bad mood one day, and she’d be in a bad mood one day.  So, you just have to figure it out.”

Luke’s album, Crash My Party, comes out August 13. The deluxe edition with four extra songs is available exclusively at Target.

FAA warns public against shooting guns at drones

(AP) — Federal aviation officials are warning that people who fire guns at drones could be prosecuted or fined.Military - Predator Drone 002

A Federal Aviation Administration statement released Friday said firing guns at unmanned aircraft could cause them to crash, injuring people or damaging property.

The agency was responding to a proposed law in the tiny farming community of Deer Trail, Colo., that would grant hunting permits to shoot drones. The permits would cost $25 each.

The proposal would also encourage drone hunting by awarding $100 to anyone who presents a valid hunting license and identifiable pieces of drone that has been shot down. It’s expected to come up for a vote next month.

The FAA said it is responsible for regulating the nation’s airspace, including over cities and towns.

KHAZ Country Music News: Jason Aldean: “I’m Not Scared of Falling on My Face”

khaz jason aldean 20130212Jason Aldean has learned by trial and error what he can and can’t do in country music. It turns out headlining stadium shows is one of the things he does very well. Jason will play Chicago’s Wrigley Field Saturday after performing two sold-out dates at Boston’s Fenway Park last weekend. Triumphant moments like this are the result of taking risks over the course of his career.

“I have always tried to do things in my career that would push myself, and by doing that I have figured out what I could do well and what I couldn’t do well,” Jason tells the Chicago Sun-Times. “I’m not scared of falling on my face. God knows I have done that plenty of times.”

Fans at the Wrigley Field show will get to hear Jason duet with show opener, Kelly Clarkson, on their monster hit “Don’t You Wanna Stay.”  Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett are also on the bill.

KHAZ Country Music News: Dierks Bentley Adds His Voice to Outcry Against “Rolling Stone” Boston Marathon Bomber Cover

khaz dierks bentley 20120702Dierks Bentley is the latest public figure to speak out against the Rolling Stone cover featuring a photo of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev.  Dierks posted a picture of someone, presumably himself, holding the magazine, with the tweet, “childish but had to d-ck the cover of @rollingstone in airport. Keep your 1st amendment & ill keep my 7 bucks. #mericah.”

As previously reported, some members of the media claim the image — a self-taken photo that shows the 19-year-old Russian immigrant with tousled hair — is reminiscent of pictures of rock icons like Bob Dylan and The DoorsJim Morrison that previously have graced the front of the magazine.

Brad Paisley also tweeted against the Rolling Stone cover Wednesday, saying it was “in poor taste.”

Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty last week to 30 counts associated with the bombing.  He’s accused of working with his older brother, Tamerlan, to set off a pair of bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15 that killed three and injured more than 260 others.

Roberts Continues to Seek Aid for Kansas Livestock Producers

U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today urged U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to allow emergency haying Pat Robertsand grazing on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) CP25 acreage to provide an important feed option for Kansas livestock producers, especially those in Western Kansas who have been hard hit by multiple years of historic drought.

Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran had issued a similar letter to Vilsack on July 11th stressing the severity of the drought in most of Kansas, asking for emergency Haying and Grazing of CP25 fields.  Text of that letter can be found here.

The following is text of the letter sent to Secretary Vilsack today, July 19th:

Dear Secretary Vilsack:

“Thank you for your attention to producers suffering from drought conditions across the country. Kansas farmers and ranchers continue to experience drought for the fourth and in some cases fifth consecutive year, impacting our rural communities, and the agricultural supply chain. As Secretary of Agriculture, you have the authority and ability to provide assistance to those in need.

I appreciate the efforts of the Kansas State FSA Committee and State Director to provide relief for farm and ranch families by approving emergency haying and grazing of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acreage. This action provides an important feed option for many of these producers.

Despite this previous action, livestock producers are running out of forage to support their herds.  Kansas has 2.3 million acres enrolled in CRP, including 850,000 acres designated as CP25, which to date has not been released for emergency haying or grazing. The majority of CP25 acreage in Kansas is found in areas experiencing severe and prolonged drought, where additional forage is a critical need for livestock.

I write to request that you grant additional emergency grazing authority for CP25 acreage as requested by the Kansas State FSA Committee on June 6, 2013.  I also request that you authorize haying of CP25 with the same rules and provisions as in 2012.  Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Dale Rodman and the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) made a similar request on July 17, 2013.

The livestock industry and wildlife interests in Kansas have a strong partnership.  These groups have been actively working on efforts in coordination with Kansas FSA and NRCS to manage grazing that is beneficial to both wildlife habitat and livestock production.  Your prompt consideration and approval of this time sensitive request will be most appreciated.”

Senator Roberts is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
