Busy Music and Mystery Weekend at HPL

From Blues to a murder mystery, the library has your afternoons covered this weekend. On Saturday, local Blues Guitarist Dok Nevins will be performing in the Hays Public LibrarySchmidt Gallery at 2:00 p.m

On Sunday, local author Jeanne Riedel will discuss her book, “Mistaken Identity” in the Schmidt Gallery at 2:00 p.m. A book signing will be held after the discussion.

In “Mistaken Idenity” Emily is excited at the prospect of spending the summer with her friend Liz. Their plain is to begin remodeling the old Victorian house that Liz just bought in a small Kansas town. Emily’s plans take a drastic turn when she arrives in Kansas, only to discover Liz’s dead body. The police call it is suicide, but Emily knows that Liz would never kill herself, despite a suicide note found by police. If Liz didn’t kill herself, it would mean she was murdered. Who would do such a thing and why? Even though she is scared and alone, Emily is undaunted in her effort to find the truth. As she searches for clues, Emily runs headlong into Lee Masters, Hampton’s most notorious, arrogant and wealthy citizen. Lee takes great joy at thwarting her every move. Emily realizes she needs help, but who can she trust? She doesn’t know where to turn. Could her friend’s death be a case of Mistaken Identity?

State revokes nursing home’s license

(AP) — Kansas is shutting down a Topeka nursing home, saying that it failed to comply with state and federal health and safety regulations.

The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services’ revocation of the Topeka Community Healthcare Center’s license will require its 55 residents to find new homes by September.

The department says the center consistently failed to achieve “substantial compliance” with standards since September 2010. Spokeswoman Angela de Rocha says it’s the first time since September 2011 that the state’s aging agency has shut down a nursing home.

Attorney Meredith Duncan says in a statement that the center disagrees with the decision but is cooperating with the agency. Duncan says the home would pursue an appeal and remains in discussions to stay open.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Thursday that Alfred Dutton, of Eureka, was convicted on one count of possession of an unregistered destructive device. The 67-year-old veteran of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines is accused of having grenades and other parts to make destructive devices.

Prosecutors told jurors at his trial in Wichita that Dutton added chemicals to gunpowder to increase the explosive power of the grenades he was making.

His defense attorney portrayed his client as a tinkerer who was experimenting with making fireworks and was working on creating a mock grenade that he planned to sell on eBay.

Sentencing will be set at a later date.

KHAZ Country Music News: Keith Urban Keen to Collaborate with Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch on Light the Fuse Tour

khaz keith urban 20130718Fans attending Keith Urban‘s Light the Fuse tour can expect to hear some brand-new music from his upcoming album, Fuse. The trek launches Thursday night in Cincinnati, and Keith can’t wait to see what the audience thinks of his new songs. The project won’t be out until the fall.

He says, “I’ve never had that happen before where an album has come out after we’ve hit the road. I’ll be doing several songs or more off the album that people don’t know, but I’m really looking forward to that.”

Another highlight of the Light the Fuse tour will be Keith’s collaborations with his opening acts, Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch. Keith and LBT gave fans a little preview of the tour with their powerhouse cover of Fleetwood Mac‘s “The Chain” at last month’s CMT Music Awards.

Speaking of that performance, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook says, “The energy that night was unbelievable.” He adds, “I think we were all feeling like we were just trying to hold on. I think it made for a real moment that was happening.”

Jimi’s wife and band mate, Karen Fairchild, agrees saying, “Keith brings it, and all I’ve got to say is you better bring it when you step on stage with him.  It was a moment that we’ll cherish forever, and now it makes me incredibly excited to see what might happen on the tour this summer.”

Collaborating with his opening acts keeps things interesting for Keith too.

He explains, “I just like working with people and seeing what comes of those energies coming together, ’cause it’s always different.”

Keith’s Light the Fuse tour will be on the road through December.

State will appeal offender registry ruling

The State of Kansas will appeal a Shawnee County district court judge’s decision earlier this week that invalidated portions of the

Offender Types

state’s offender registry as applied to one individual, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today. The judge ruled that certain amendments to the Kansas offender registration laws, made in 2011 to implement the requirements of the federal Adam Walsh Act, violate the United States Constitution.

“After carefully reviewing the district court’s ruling, we do not think it is legally correct,” Schmidt said. “We will fight for the integrity of the Kansas Offender Registration Act, and for Kansas’s continued compliance with the federal Adam Walsh Act, which is designed to protect the public, particularly children, from sex offenders throughout the country. Having complete and accurate information about registered sex offenders available to the public through the online registry is a central public safety purpose of the federal law, which Kansas has implemented, and the district court’s ruling runs counter to that purpose.”

The Attorney General also announced that the State intends to appeal the judge’s earlier ruling that allowed the plaintiff to proceed in the litigation in an anonymous “John Doe” capacity.

“The public has a right to know when a convicted sex offender challenges the very law that is designed to protect the public. This cloak of anonymity does not serve the public interest or advance public safety,” Schmidt said.

Senators ready to restore lower college loan rates UPDATE

5p.m. update U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) released the following statement today regarding his support for the bipartisan student loan interest rate proposal. Negotiations have been ongoing in the Senate to reverse a hike on interest rates for new federally subsidized undergraduate student loans that went into effect July 1st. These subsidized undergraduate Stafford loans account for roughly 40 percent of all federal student loans.

“It is well past time for Congress and the President to pass a student loan policy that provides certainty and reflects the long-term financial planning students and families undertake to pay for higher education. Education is often a family’s most important investment and ought not be complicated by short-sighted Washington politics.

“In the interest of both students and taxpayers, I will support the bipartisan agreement in the Senate to permanently address interest rate levels for all federal student loans, and am pleased it appears it will be signed into law before many students return to school later this summer.”

3 p.m. update   (AP) — A bipartisan group of senators is announcing a deal that lets students dodge higher interest rates when they go back to campus this fall.

The group on Thursday told reporters they have reached a compromise that lowers the rates for all students who borrow from the federal government. The rates would be linked to financial markets, meaning interest rates would climb in coming years.

Democrats insisted on and won a cap on how rates could climb.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois says the bill does not give any negotiator everything he sought. But it provides relief for students who were facing interest rates that doubled to 6.8 percent on new loans.

The House has already passed similar legislation and the differences could be resolved before students return to campus.

5: 10 a.m. (AP) — Senators are ready to offer students a better deal on their loans this fall, but future classes could see higher interest rates.Capitol Building - USA 001
The Senate could vote as early as Thursday on a bipartisan compromise that heads off a costly increase for returning students. The compromise would be a relative deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus this spring.
Rates on some loans doubled on July 1 because Congress failed to reach an agreement.
Under the deal, rates would be linked to the financial markets. Rates would increase as the economy improves. Democrats demanded and won a cap on how high those rates could climb.
