Work on US 183 Set to Begin in Ellis County

Road work to seal U.S. 183 Highway in Ellis County will begin – weather permitting.US 183 north

Starting in Hays at 55th Street and continuing north approximately 15 miles to the Ellis/Rooks County line, workers will spread a thin layer of asphalt oil over the pavement then coat it with a layer of rock chips that are pressed into place with heavy rollers. Chip Seals are a low cost method of sealing minor cracking in a roadway, preventing water from seeping into the pavement and therefore extending the life of the roadway.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane; and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car operation during daylight hours on this project. Minor delays should be expected through the construction time frame, not exceeding 15 minutes. The public should plan their travels accordingly. Pay attention to the signs and workers within a road construction zone and “Give ‘Em A Brake!”

Weather permitting, the U.S. 183 seal will be complete by July 26.

House GOP seeks delay in health care provisions

(AP) — House Republicans, politically emboldened by President Barack Obama’s delay of a key requirement of his health care law, are taking another run at Capitol Building - USA 001scrapping his signature domestic policy.

The House has scheduled votes Wednesday to delay the law’s individual and employer mandates. It will be the 38th time the GOP majority has tried to eliminate, defund or scale back the program since Republicans took control of the House in January 2011.

The votes are a chance to score political points. The legislation is going nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate and the administration said emphatically the president would veto the measures.

Earlier this month, the administration announced a one-year delay in requiring businesses with 50 or more employees to provide health coverage for their workers or pay a penalty.

Kansas colonoscopy patients urged to get blood tests

(AP) — A southeast Kansas hospital is asking 244 patients who received colonoscopies since early January to get tested for communicable Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 7.15.11 PMdiseases because its equipment wasn’t properly cleaned and disinfected.

Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute says the risk that anyone was infected with hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV is extremely low — but not zero — so it is encouraging its colonoscopy patients to get tested for those diseases.

The hospital says the endoscope used for colonoscopies wasn’t properly flushed according to the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions because a water channel in the device was not being used.

It says the scopes were immersed in a sterilizing agent before being used on each new patient, so the chance that any diseases will be transmitted through the equipment is very low.
