Brownback criticized over policy on court hopefuls

(AP) — Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s critics are not mollified by his latest statement outlining why he won’t release the names of Screen-Shot-2013-07-11-at-10.49.35-AM.pngapplicants for a new Kansas Court of Appeals seat.

Brownback said Thursday that releasing the names would discourage some qualified applicants from coming forward.

The League of Women Voters of Kansas had pushed the governor’s office to release the names. President Dolores Furtado said the group is “profoundly disappointed.”

The new judge will be chosen under a selection process in effect this month. The governor will make the appointment, subject to Senate confirmation.

Previously, a nominating commission screened applicants and named three finalists, with no role for lawmakers after the governor’s appointment.

Kansas Values Institute Executive Director Ryan Wright said Brownback has “closed off” scrutiny of the appointment.

Gambling task forces question state funding

(AP) — Members of problem-gambling task forces in Kansas say the state is not adequately funding efforts to combat gambling and other Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 7.46.35 AMaddictions.

The task forces work in zones around the three state-owned casinos. Members of those task forces were told Wednesday that each group would receive $10,000 in fiscal 2014, the same amount as last year.

The  members of the task forces said $10,000 a year is an insignificant amount and a “slap in the face” to volunteers who work with problem gamblers.

The law that created the state-owned casinos in Mulvane, Dodge City and Wyandotte County requires that 2 percent of gambling revenue from the casinos go to the Problem Gambling and Addictions Grant Fund. However, most of the money has been allocated for Medicaid expenditures.

KHAZ Country Music News: Justin Moore and Greg Bates Want to Give You Free Music and Help the Troops Too

khaz justin moore 20130613Justin Moore wants you to download his new song, “Heroes,” for free while doing some good for U.S. troops at the same time.  From now until July 28, fans 21 and over can download a free copy of “Heroes” at CrownHeroesSong.com, and Crown Royal will donate one dollar to the Armed Forces Foundation for every download.

Justin recorded the song in honor of everyday heroes like U.S. Marine Samuel Deeds, who recently won Crown Royal’s Your Hero’s Name Here contest.  As a result, Deeds won the naming rights for the upcoming Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 28.

The honor recognizes Deeds’ bravery in saving other soldiers’ lives by absorbing the blast from an IED himself.  After enduring more than 30 surgeries due to injuries from the blast, Deeds went on to save three more people caught in a rip tide off the coast of North Carolina.  His wife nominated him for the honor.

Country newcomer Greg Bates wrote “Heroes” with guys like Deeds in mind.

Says Greg, “I hope that this song makes people notice and appreciate the everyday HEROES in their own lives.”

Larks Fall Short in El Dorado

One night after scoring 18 runs on 19 hits, the Hays Larks are held to just two runs on seven hits as they fall to El Dorado 4-2 Wednesday night at McDonald Park in El Dorado.  The win pulls the Broncos (20-12, 16-11 Jayhawk League) back within a game of the first-place Larks (23-9, 16-9) in the Jayhawk League standings.

The Broncos did most of their damage in the third, scoring three runs on five hits. The Broncos used four straight singles off Larks starter Jason Zgardowski to grab a 2-0 lead. They would get a two-out single to drive in the third run.

The Larks scored in the sixth on a Jake Placzek single but left the bases loaded. Down 4-1, they added another run in the eighth on a Clayton Garland single.

Zgardowski (3-3) takes the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one over five innings. Dalton Viner made his return to the team and allowed the other run on one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

The teams wrap up the three-game series Thursday night. The Larks then return home to face Liberal on Saturday.

Tuesday’s Jayhawk League results…
Dodge City 4, Derby 3
Liberal 6, Wellington 4

Harvest Update: Most Ellis Area Wheat Disappointing

Reports from western Kansas continue to show disappointing yields for those farmers, as the 2013 wheat harvest enters its final days.

Farmers in the Ellis area averaged between 30 and 35 bushels per acre, according to Roxy Solomon at the Golden Belt Coop Association in Ellis. Yields ranged from the teens to 50 bushels per acre; test weight averaged 59.5 pounds and proteins averaged about 12.5. Solomon says the elevator took in just two-thirds the grain of last year’s poor crop; many acres were abandoned due to drought and freeze, and hailstorms hit many area farms.

Jason Ochs, Kansas Wheat Commissioner from Syracuse, says many farmers did not even put combines in the field due to the promise of very poor yields, and many area farmers say these were the worst conditions they had ever seen. The majority of wheat in Hamilton County was abandoned due to drought and freeze; Ochs had yields ranging from 5 to 21 bushels per acre on his farm, although most of it was between 10 and 15 bushels per acre. Ochs grows all white wheat; he said those varieties yielded good quality, with test weights averaging 63 pounds per bushel.

Art Koster at the Winona Feed and Grain, says harvest is wrapping up in northern Logan County. Yields range from 5 to 25 bushels per acre, test weights average 60 pounds per bushel, and protein ranging from10-15%. Koster says much of the area’s wheat crop was abandoned, and he will take in only about 30% of a normal harvest. This is the worst wheat crop he has seen since 1981, when the wheat crop was destroyed by a freeze in early May.

The outlook is brighter in Stafford County, where Stafford County Flour Mills took in more than 2.4 million bushels from their three locations. Crop quality was excellent, according to assistant manager Derek Foote; test weight averaged 60 pounds per bushel and protein averaged 13%. Yields ranged from 30 to 50 bushels per acre in the region, which was better than most farmers expected. For more than 100 years, Stafford County Flour Mills has produced Hudson Cream Flour products.

The 2013 Harvest Report is brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and sponsors Kansas City Board of Trade, and the Kansas Grain & Feed Association.
