10 a.m. There were no injuries as a result of Saturday morning’s apartment complex fire at 2840 Canal Blvd., Apartment #21.
Captain Chris Stegman told Hays Post, “Three engines, two ladder trucks and 20 fire department personnel worked the fire at the Briarwood Place apartments. When fire crews arrived, the blaze was on the 2nd floor balcony and some plastic was also on fire that could have sent the fire to the first floor. Some floorboards on a deck and the side of the build were damaged. There was no fire in the rest of the building and very little smoke damage. Everyone, including those in the unit where the fire started, returned to their apartments. The cause of the fire is believed to be discarded smoking materials in a flower pot.”
A wild baby raccoon, spending the night outside the apartment to be turned over to animal control, was the only victim of the fire.
“Considering the early hour on a Saturday, this could have been much worse,” said Stegman. The fire crews were assisted by the City of Hays Police Department and Ellis County EMS.
